New haldex system has no filter?

Hey everyone,

I have a quick question, sorry in advance if it’s a stupid one but I know nothing about the HALDEX system. I just see a lot of posts on here about having to get the filter changed when serviced. Anyway, coming up to my Q2s 1st service and the dealer has said that mine has no filter as it is the new type of haldex system. Is this true?
 
Hi, Loads of threads here, there is a filter... Audi don't recognise it as a filter as it involves the hardship of removing 2 screws to get to therefore its a lifetime sealed unit.... oh and if the filter isn't cleaned then your Haldex can get goosed.
There is a diy thread on how to service it, either do it yourself or get an indi to clean the filter and refill the oil, The job takes literally 10 minutes if you can get under the car.

Possibly true, no filter it’s a plastic gauze.
It’s needs pump removed and cleaned, AUDI don’t clean this.

Recommend getting an Audi specialist to do it or do it yourself.

Cheers for the replies. I know there is loads on the forum regarding this but wasn’t sure if this was a next gen haldex or something! Dealer set me these 3 images to show that there is no filter. I have no idea what I am looking at haha

They don’t clean it not recommend by Vw or Audi!
Simple!

But can cause haldax failure after 10k miles.

Wasting your time talking to Audi. The only way they will remove the pump is to replace it or the diff. They will 100% not clean it or even acknowledge there is a filter / gauze

Won’t they cover it under warranty if they don’t recognise it as a part that needs to be serviced?

You can send them any link you like, they will not digress from the official VW repair manual, so you’re wasting your time. This is not a recongnised as a serviceable part so won’t be touched at Audi. Only way is do it yourself or an Indi ( be aware a lot of Indis don’t touch it either).

It will cost you £36 for the oil and 20 minutes to do it yourself.

The reason I was give by Audi was that, according to the workshop manual, the two bolts and the rubber gaskets should be replaced if the pump is removed.
As they didn't hold stock of those items they wouldn't remove the pump to check the filter.

I was given the reason as, not may cars are driven hard enough, and that system not used.

Good Ol' Audi desk monkeys..... Seriously though, how the hell do they get away with having such Muppets representing this Marque? I wish I could say its just a couple of them that let the side down but genuinely never met a useful Audi Franchise employee.

I could possibly believe that, if the dealer's assertion that I have been driving without diff oil for over a year is correct. Having said that, the car was only making noise in the last few weeks, so I highly doubt that is the case.

Should have said "OK then, well order them in and then I'll have the service done when you can also check the filter".

Not just Audi mate, I phoned a Mazda dealership at the weekend and asked a sales guy if they do a 3 year service plan on new cars? His reply "I'm not sure, I think we do one", so I asked how much is it? "Ermm think it's about £20 per month", I asked what else do you get with it as some places throw in breakdown cover or discounted parts etc., "I don't know if they throw anything in", OK so do Mazda do their own service plan where I can take it to any Mazda dealership rather than being tied to one dealership? "I don't know if they do".....and he's a SALES guy!!! At that point I gave up :p What happened to 'Know about what you are selling'? :blink:

Or other unrelated engine parts that the "indi garage MUST have mucked about with despite such work not being included on their invoice".

The only "trouble free" way to sort this out is to have Audi change the haldex oil, then take it to an indie and have the gauze cleaned but never tell Audi this is what was done.
As soon as you go to an indi garage for anything you can potentially kiss your warranty good bye.

Agreed. My indie just told me that he doesn't think the camshaft was even repaired properly! Picking up the car later so will see what's what. Complaint to Audi Warranty incoming...

Since the Haldex system is designed and manufactured by BorgWarner, it is most likely provided under warranty to Audi / VW group by them (lifetime for the motor is my guess). Anything goes wrong with the system under warranty, Audi sends the unit / part(s) back for credit / payment. This is how most auto - vendor parts work (lighting, clusters, switches ect). I would assume BorgWarner has a lifetime cycle for the system and thus provides no need for servicing the unit to VAG. Fluid has a service life but BargWarner sees no reason for the strainer to be cleaned. Certainly is a lot of clutch material on the strainer from the photos I see so I certainly will clean mine in the future. Cheers
