Hi All,

I am looking at a 2010 A3 sportback with the 2.0 TFSI lump in (CCZA engine code - Believe it to be the later EA888). It has about 78/79k on the clock.

I have done some digging for potential pitfalls/issues on this engine and the timing chain tensioner seems to be the most common. Is there anything else to look out for?

I guess the typical PCV blocking up with oilly mess?

Thanks in advance guys, much appreciated

I'd not be too worried about the PCV on a petrol, but do make sure you have the lated version of the cam chain tensioner, there were several incarnations before they got it right.
I've not done one of these tensioners, but it doesn't look too bad a job. You need a locking tool to remove the crank pulley and be sure the bolt is re-inserted with a spacer to keep the timing correct.
You might also be advised to fit a replacement timing cover as this is apparently a one-time fit.

Thanks alot for your help!car in question isnt currently ticking on start up but if i do go ahead with it ill make sure to get it done.

An indi garage quoted me around the £750 mark for both chains, all tensioners/runners and the cover. Sound about right?

If the chains are running quietly, you just need to ensure you have the latest spec tensioner.

One other thing on these engines - oil consumption - check with the previous owner if you can.

I have a CCZA as well. Had the whole chain kit fitted early this year, chain, guides, tensioner for £850. That includes fresh oil and filter which has to be anyway. Only trusted AMD at West Thurrock to do it. Maybe a bit over the top on changing the whole lot but didn’t want to take any chances.
And yes it is the E888 engine. Cam follower for the fuel pump does tick now and again but is ok, it’s not the same design as the earlier 2.0 tfsi’s but a roller style bearing so don’t worry about that. Anything else you want to know give a shout out to me.

Thats great thanks guys!i know my diesels pretty damn well but petrols not so much. Heard these map to around the 240/250 mark so think thatll be my first mod once I build some confidence in it.

I have a 2012 golf GTI with I think the same EA888 engine on 40k miles and I've been having some issues which I think are symptoms of a bad DV/turbo. So watch out for that.

Had mine mapped the same time as changing the chain, 249 bhp it came to but the coil packs started to give up shortly after and is quite common with a remap. There’s no oil consumption problem on the 2.0 engine only on the 1.8. Mine is Quattro version and only managed 27mpg before the remap, now 29 to 32mpg, also quieter and smoother than before.

Depends on the year - there was definitely an oil consumption problem on 2009-2012 2.0 TFSi (or FSi) these were the years when VW Group would measure the oil consumption & remedy if above their limit; I believe it was a piston ring problem.
