High beam assist retrofit

I'm guessing it'll be roughly the same as my SQ5.
You'll need the mirror with the camera in, the wiring loom and this is where it can get costly, an extended can gateway if your car doesn't have it.

Only assist I have is parking sensors which I guess would be a different module? There is some little thing on my mirror facing out the front window but guessing it's just the sensor for auto lights?
Yeah sounds like you have the normal gateway. Your looking at £200 for a used gateway including having the component protection removed.
The rear view mirror has a large square camera at the bottom which is different to the small square light sensor that you have now.
Is it worth retrofitting? Depends on where you drive on a night tbh as it wont work if you usually drive with street lights around, it's only out in the sticks where it works

Definitely not worth it in my opinion.
I have it on my car and never use it, I think it’s too slow to react to oncoming traffic. By the time it flicks back to dipped beam I would have already seen the oncoming car in the distance and knocked high beam off.

This. It’s crap. I have it and I keep meaning to research how to disable it. It’s slow and useless. Every other assist on the car is awesome but high beam assist is terrible!

I'd like to know where it is in the settings. The only one I can see is for the automatic headlights to cone on early or later,which I assumed to be ambient light level adjustment for the auto headlights on, not high beam assist

I have high beam assist and mine works fine. When I first got the car I found that it was too slow for oncoming cars, so I changed the setting to the most aggressive (I can't remember the proper name or how the setting is done so I believe the correct acronym to use is RTFM ). Now it dips automatically and I never have oncoming cars flash me because of it. If anything it is slightly over sensitive because it will dip under certain circumstances when my headlights reflect off some signs or maybe buildings. But at least this is predictable - on one of my journeys I always know when it will do a "false" dip and so I am ready for it. Considering that its a B8.5 so the tech is old I think it works pretty well.

I tried setting mine to early this evening.
It doesn’t seem to have made a lot, if any, difference. It still seems to switch around a second or so later than what I would do it manually.
It could be I notice it due to the rural area that I live in, with minimal street lighting.

Thats tricky to say when I'd need to be the driver of the oncoming car, to confirm I was dazzling them.Albeit when people coming the other way occasioanly feel the need to flash their lights at me, I'd assume the delay isnt acceptable to some.

Personally I feel that even if most people are being tolerant of my headlights and not expressing their displeasure, there will always be at least one who isn't and will flash their headlights at me. I have been driving my S5 with automatic headlights on the early setting for nearly 5 years now and I do not get flashed. That's the basis on which I feel that the system works, at least for my car.
We already know that my memory isn’t what it once was, but I seem to recall that when I got the S4, it was you @Dippy who suggested I set the auto lights to “early”.

I have just been out in my S5 and I paid particular attention to how quick the auto-dip was. IMO it was instant - as soon as oncoming headlights appeared it switched. I'm not sure I could have reacted more quickly myself. On this basis @MattS5 I have to think that there is something different between our cars but from what I can see they should be identical!
From what I can see in the manual there’s no setting for sensitivity of the HBA on B8, the Automatic Headlights setting in my manual says it affects how soon the lights are switched on when in auto mode but nothing regarding high beam assist. Maybe that’s a difference between the B8 and B8.5 tech.
I did change it to early and tried HBA on the way from work but there appeared to be no difference so I’m happier just doing it manually. Not that I use high beam very often anyway.

Mine is on early and it’s as slow as anything. Other drivers will flash me before it reacts

Looks to be somewhat age related and the newer systems are a bit quicker to react. The system in my car is coming up 10yr old now so makes sense that it isn’t quite as good as the newer ones
