RS5 much more to run than S5?

Hi

I am looking at getting a 2014 S5 or RS5.

I would prefer the RS5 with the V8 than the S5 6VT for the sound and the more aggressive styling. I won't be taking it on a track and so the S5 is probably a more sensible choice put I am still pulled more towards the RS5.

I had been put off the RS5 by the potentially high running costs but is the S5 actually going to be much cheaper as a daily driver (about 7K miles pre year)? I would get a warranty with either car.

Thanks for any thoughts.

That's the thing. I'm pretty sure I can afford it but I have never owned a performance car so don't really know if I am letting myself in for a world of expensive repair bills.

I am expecting about £1k for front disks and obviously more expensive fuel costs with the RS5 but will the other costs be much different? I believe the gearbox is the same so maintenance on that will be the same. Not many S5s have the sports diff so that is an extra service item on the RS5 but other than that will maintenance be much different between the two?

In terms of servicing, there isn't an enormous difference in pricing. Audi quote £350 for an interim service on an RS5 and £220 for an S5. A major service is £675 for the RS5 and £485 for an S5.

Assuming you use Audi for brake servicing, a full set of pads on the RS5 will run you £680, or £2,250 for brakes and pads all round. On an S5, that work would come to £435 and £924 respectively.

The real unknown will be the costs if something goes wrong and given that an RS5 has more additional kit on it then there is more potential for things to go wrong. 2014 cars are second generation B8s with most of the wrinkles ironed out, but they're also 5 year old cars at this point and depending on mileage will likely be approaching the stage where you may have to start addressing larger bills as certain components wear out.

I'd say check out buyers guides for known weak points and give you a better idea of what things might cost if they go wrong and then go for the one you really want (the RS5) and as with any used car, buy on condition and history over mileage alone. If the seller agrees, it is worth paying to have the car inspected by an independent garage before parting with cash so there aren't any nasty surpises!

Thanks Theophany. I plan to get a warranty with either car and the warranty is only about £100 more expensive for the RS. It sounds like the service cost difference isn't too bad. It's just the brakes on the RS that are the killer. If I can find one with new discs then that should help!

A late 2014 S5 will have the second generation V6T which is a bit more efficient (primarily due to supercharger clutch) and potentially more reliable.
The V8s are notorious for carbon build-up.
IMO the B9 Rs5 is the way to go but I had a look at Audi's approved used list yesterday and the cheapest was £54K!

An S5 with a remap and a bit of tuning can easily go over 400hp , but keeping the
running costs much lower than an RS5 .
Mind you , nothing beats the sound of a V8 .
Decisions , decisions

That may void the warranty though, plus increased insurance costs.

I probably wouldn't remap to avoid issues with warranty and insurance. In real world driving I don't find the S5 much slower based on test drives. The only thing I have against the S5 is that it isn't an RS, if you know what I mean.

Has anyone switched between RS and S5 and found much difference in maintenance costs?

Agree with warranty and insurance costs , specially in the UK .
Here in Lebanon , no such problem with remaps . They never check :)
