Seeking advice with pending Audi purchase

Hello everyone :icon thumright:

This is my first post and I hope it's in the correct section.

In the coming weeks I've got my heart set on replacing my current daily with an Audi. I did try and arrange to view a vehicle the other day at the Audi dealers but unfortunately it had been sold.

The advice I'm after is which is the best variant to buy? I need reliability for the daily commute (and sat nav).

I'm looking at years 2012 - 2016 and I'm keen on an A4 but would consider an A3.

I will be looking at a diesel for the MPG plus I believe there's an issue with the petrol engines and excessive oil consumption?

Would you recommend a manual or diesel (and why)?

Finally, what's the cambelt change interval on the model years I've specified?

Dependent on your daily commute but for me a Petrol/Automatic is a must. The Auto gear boxes these days are so good,i would never go back to a manual & if you look at most of the big car makers these days on some models there is no manual option which to me shows how good the auto boxes have become.

I've never driven an automatic in almost 20 years of driving... is it easy enough to get used to one?
I thought there was an oil issue with petrol's too?

........same here was over 20 years of driving before i had my first auto, a Golf GTI Edition35. At first it takes a bit of getting used to not using or having a clutch pedal but after a while it's great. In traffic you can just sit there with out pumping the clutch pedal up/down every few seconds then just press the go pedal & you'r away. I'm now on my 4th auto & as before will never go back to a manual. Never had oil issues with any of my petrol cars & i've never had a diesel car ever. They may need a slight top up every now & again but they don't drink it by any means.
 
Oh OK... I thought the oil issue was rife. Seems to be if you google it?
 
I went auto with my current car after 15 years driving manual. I do miss the feel of actually changing cogs, but it’s not a huge deal and driving an auto, even if you’ve never used one before, is a doddle that will take you no time to get used to. If your commute is very stop-start an auto is a no-brainer whereas if it’s mostly motorway/A-road then it doesn’t matter so much either way.

I’ve also never owned a diesel and never will for a variety of reasons but objectively the decision on engine choice mostly rests on cost, which in turn is dependent on your annual mileage.

Taking a hypothetical diesel that averages 40mpg and comparing with a hypothetical petrol that averages 30mpg, at today’s fuel prices the cost difference over 15000 miles is about £700, but over 5000 miles it’s about £200. The other factor in favour of diesel is the torque, so it might sway your decision if you plan on towing stuff or want to buy a big barge of a car.

The oil issue is with the 2.0 TFSI engines, it's a real thing so double check that any car you are interested in is either not affected or if so has had the Audi recall work done, if I'm correct I think it was between 2009 & 2011/12 that had the issue but don't rely on me do your research!
I recently rang a car dealer (not Audi) about a 2009 2.o tfsi quattro and he swore blind that the car he was selling wasn't affected and that it was the previous B7 range that had the problem haha yeah mate of course! 8-10k bill apparently if pop goes the weasel!
 
Not an Audi but a Skoda VRS.
I bought a brand new Octavia VRS 220 petrol in 2015, uses the same TFSI engine as found in countless Audi's, Skoda's and Seat's etc.
I noticed blue smoke under hard acceleration at just under 20000 miles, by 23000 it was producing the smoke under normal daily driving, an oil residue was starting to appear around the oil filler cap and it was needing regular top up's every couple of weeks.

The last straw was a round trip to Hampshire from Gloucester of around 180 miles, oil level dropped from the full mark to just above the minimum on the dipstick.
Sold it.

In the end I bought a 2014 A4 S Line, 2.0 diesel/manual from an Audi dealer. I'm made up with it so far but it's booked in at Audi in a couple of weeks to investigate water ingress into the spare wheel well.
