My 3 year warranty will be ending soon and I am trying to decide between the two options on Extended Warranty. At first reading, the Named Component cover seems fairly comprehensive, so I am wondering if in my particular situation the extra cost of All Component cover is worthwhile, and also whether it’s worth paying extra for a low excess.

My car has covered 16000 miles and my annual mileage is very low, less than 4000 miles. The car is meticulously maintained and always garaged, so not exposed to the elements 24/7. My main concern is a repair bill running into many £100s or £1000s for sudden failure of an expensive item.

All this steers me towards the cheapest option, Named Component cover with a £250 excess. However I
I would be interested in any comments, especially from anyone who has experience of extended warranty claims.

I haven’t claimed on the extended warranty but I do have experience of setting up. Only you know the answer to your question, everyone will have their own personal experience or different usage of their car which in turn will decide the cover they go for. Your car seems well maintained so perhaps the cheapest option is best? I went with zero excess and all component just so I could have peace of mind. Personally I would always recommend this as the cost difference isn’t too much, but the cost of repair for a part that isn’t covered is way higher than the extra premium. Have you checked the price differences for the levels? Cheapest vs best cover?

I am in a similar position and I elected to named component and an excess. To be honest I can’t remember what excess, but maybe £250. I agree that the named component cover seems to cover the items that are likely to be expensive. I was particularly concerned about the s-tronic.

Thanks Ormesome and Richard T. Two completely different views, which confirms that it’s not an obvious choice!

I was hoping to hear from folks who had made a claim, to get some idea of repair costs, and how reasonable Audi are about what they will pay for. The list of exclusions to the cover is formidable, and would seem to give quite a lot of scope for rejecting claims if someone wanted to nit-pick.

I just extended mine last night for full cover & £100 excess costing £372, i thought for the not so much extra cost it was worth it. I bought my first pre owned S3 sport back in 2012 which came with warranty, after 6 months of ownership I had a problem with the servo, I found Audi not the easiest to deal with tbh, with a bit of a fight I got it fixed at their cost but it was frustrating, it could have just that dealer but that was my experience, but I would rather have warranty for peace of mind.

Just received the email from Audi offering the discounted price for extended warranty since I’m now in the last month of original 3 year warranty. Decided to go with the All Components cover and £250 excess. Premium comes in at £230. Would have been only £36 less for the Named Component cover. Surprised to see that the discounted offer is available for up to 30 days after my current cover ends.

That’s really great value. Never seen it that low before. The offer is prob valid for after 30days that your existing policy explores because you have been given a quote. If you go out of warranty and then get a quote then the resulting price isn’t the same.

My car has had an airbag control module and leaky thermostat housing replaced under extended warranty, I would advise that if the all components cover is a little more money than named it's worth it; a coolant leak will cost you around £700 at least to repair! Also things like Haldex pumps can go which costs you over £200 to repair, can either be free or £100 with extended warranty depending on the excess you choose.

Thanks HertS3

For just £36 extra the All Component cover seemed worthwhile. Chances are I will never need the warranty, but it’s good for peace of mind.

I would say that's definitely worth it; if you don't think that you'll claim (who ever does?) perhaps a £100 excess is a good balance between saving some premium and not having to fork out a fortune should a claim be necessary. As @Ormesome said, everyone is different so the decision is yours to make

I have just received an email from audi offering me to extend my warranty as it runs out next month.

Is there some documentation that lists the stuff that the limited cover wouldn’t cover you for compared to the full cover?

I found it quite hard to understand exactly what is NOT covered by the Named Components cover, which is one reason why I went for All Components. The difference in premium is not that great.

I did note that All Components covers Consequential Failures and failures due to water ingress, but since these are not mentioned under Named Component these failures are presumably not included with this level of cover.

I purchased my '66 plate FL S3 in May this year with a 12 month Audi approved used warranty. As the car will be 3 years old on November 23rd I have just received my invitation from Audi to extend the original 3 year warranty. As I'm only 6 months into my used warranty I don't really want to start an extended warranty from November but rather from May 2020! Anyone had experience of this & how I could run the extended warranty from May 2020?
TIA

I would have thought you wouldn't be able to extend the warranty from May as you are going to be 6 months over the time frame in the system. The warranty, from what I have seen, is online-based only and no agent or dealership will be able to help. When I called up or talked to my dealership they could only point me to the online website, same as Audi UK customer services that specialise in the warranty, no help, just go online and do it.

When you log in to my audi do you see your warranty until May 2020? I have a sneaky suspicion that you won't and that the 12 months used warranty is more a local, dealership based affair, even if it is nationwide warranty.

The fact that you have got a letter or communication from them tells you everything really. You CAN get a warranty from May 2020, its no problem, however, the price is SOOOOO much cheaper when you extend when you are in warranty than out, and i mean more than double. It is 100% going to be cheaper for you to extend now rather than later even if you have 6months of double cover.

You post a good question though and one that really should be looked at by Audi. I just think their online systems are as intelligent as we want them to be.

Thanks for the reply. I suspected as much to be honest!

Just get it done. Way cheaper to do it now than in 6months time when youre out of warranty so its false economy really. You can pay monthly too if you don't want to pay upfront. What price is the website showing?

Definitely go by the system; the previous owner of my car was a few months out of manufacturer's warranty when she got it (they never wrote to her to give the option to extend!) and full cover with £100 excess was nearly £800 for the year! Luckily (or not!) two repairs were carried out under the warranty which would've cost at least £2,000 I reckon (thermostat housing/pump replacement due to leak and airbag control module replacement) so it more than paid for itself. When it came to renewal the price halved!

Showing £370 for all component cover with £100 excess. Also just had my video cam inspection sent to me by Audi to confirm a leaking thermostat housing! Obviously a warranty issue but Worthing Audi quoting £783.76. They have also picked up that the car is fitted with Mercedes only spec tyres! (MO printed in bold on all 4 tyres, Dunlop sport Max)! Is this just an attempt to get me to buy 4 Continentals from at £121 a corner, & do I have a case against Tunbridge Wells Audi selling me an approved used Audi with tyres that don't meet Audi spec, 149 point check and all that?

Not sure about that (my colleague recently required new tyres for her Tiguan and most of the tyres that came up for the right size were Audi brand AO which it said should only be fitted to Audis) but don't get Contis, they're the worst of the premium brands. Also make sure you check Black Circles etc.

I would say those tyres should've been picked up in the (almost) 150 point check!

Just had a chat with the service guy, who said if a customer came back with same complaint that they would likely have to sort it! His & Audi's reasoning is that S & RS products are performance vehicles that require the correct tyre to perform as intended. They all have between 5-6 mm left, so not keen to change all 4! Id likely go Goodyear or Pirelli anyway! Lets see what Tunbridge Audi say!

So 370 but you are going to be doubling your cover so really you are going to be paying 185 more than someone else. Personally, I would take that hit. It will be 3x 185 more expensive to get an extended warranty in 6months time. Im not sure how it would work for yr 4-5 either as if you tried to do it in 6 months time, ie 3.5yrs old then that would take your car to 4.5yrs old. Then you might not be able to do it for 1yr at 4.5yrs old as the extended warranty is usually up to 5yrs old, I can't see Audi giving a warranty to 5.5yrs old. Also, if your car is already showing a problem then you never know what might be round the corner. If the previous owner didn't care about what tires he/she put on it then you don't know what else they did. Not wanting to alarm you of course, but thinking worst case....

Why not put it to max excess and just component cover for the 1st year and then go max for the 4th year? you have 6months of full protection so really its only the 2nd 6 months that is a worry. I doubt anything will go wrong then but if it does you are covered. If not then you save some cash. Then at 4yrs get the best cover with least excess to cover every eventuality.

AFAIK Audi extended warranty is available until the car reaches 100k miles

Scrap what I said! Audi have changed it! no more 5yrs, seems like anyone can do it! just got a reg off eBay for an 8p 2010 A3 and it worked. Its 800pounds, but it worked!!

The logics of the finances side in my previous post still applies I guess though!

Yes - I just renewed for year 6.

May I ask have you been under warranty for all 6 years, or did you start a policy outside of the normal warranty period?

I have been quoted £600+ for a 2014 S3 with 32k on it if I took out a policy today. I bought the car second hand with expired warranty so had no chance to extend it.

I am so nervous about water pumps, airbag/seatbelt problems that I see on here almost daily. I wonder if were to look at the slightly longer game (as I plan to keep hold of the car), it might be worthwhile starting down the extended warranty road. Yes, it is a punchy price for the first year, but would my 'next year' be cheaper?

Yes. Standard warranty for 3 years then renewed annually when I got the renewal email.
I suspect it will be difficult to get a good price with a gap in warranty.

Yes - it should roughly halve once it comes up for renewal. That price actually isn't too bad, on my car is was over £750 first year with gap, at renewal came down to £380 or so, with £100 excess and 50k miles

Does a claim impact the following year's premium? Anyone have experience of this?

Doesn't seem to - I had two claims in the previous policy period and renewal was still half the price (as above, first policy was bought out of warranty so was close to £800, renewal half that price). Having said that though, first policy bought in a different name (previous owner) and I paid her back the instalments until it ran out (as no refund given for cancelling early once you claim) so perhaps the system didn't consider the claims even though they were on the same car?

That's a decent price for piece of mind, did you only get one reminder before it ended? I recall seeing a post awhile back where someone got a quote but then left it right until the end, then they dropped the price again. The next car I get I'm thinking of long term ownership, but don't know if I should buy it upfront when I order the car or at the end of 3 years.

I think the accepted wisdom is to buy up front if you are keeping the car. I believe that the extended warranty that you buy when the car is new is more comprehensive than even the All Components cover bought later. May be wrong though.

For a number of reasons, I've decided to keep the car past the 3 years for the first time in years.
Therefore, I've taken out the extended warranty All Components Cover with £100 excess for around £360 ish from memory.
That'll see me through to maybe Spring or beyond when I finally decide to change.
I just need to join breakdown cover from someone as it's not included.

You can extend Audi Assist for around 150 for 2yrs. Well worth it as it includes EU Cover and full AA cover. The AA or other equivalent is way over double.

Edit: Link here. seems like its online too. Used to be on the phone. This is the result of my old A3.

Thanks for that, much appreciated.
Just had a quick look and even the Annual one is £89 or £99 for continuous.
It's strange that, although this is available, they only tell you about the AA one when renewing the warranty (perhaps because it's more expensive me thinks).

No worries. Its insanely good value. I remember getting a quote for AA cover for 2 weeks to France and it was near 200 for only the 2 weeks and not yearly!

Actually, your quote in your last post is round the wrong way! Annual continuous means that you are still in cover when taken out. Much like the warranty, Audi gives you a discount for continuing cover. If you go out of this cover then you pay more, hence why it is 89 for continuous or 99 if you take it out whilst not in cover. Same for 2yr policy.

I have the full component cover with zero excess.

went to book my car in for an warranty issue the other day and the dealership said i had to pay £60 for a diagnostic check and if it was found to be a warranty issue they would refund the £60 if it was an issue down to wear and tear they wouldn’t.

is this how its supposed to work? Its ok of it is but just want to check they aren’t just making stuff up.
