Hi,

I’ve just picked my car up from the body shop, after some toad reversed into the rear door and drove off. Upon collecting the car, the doors were unlocked, and I when I went to start it I got the message ‘key not detected’. I managed to get the car to start by placing the key on the pad in the centre console and assumed with it being a keyless car, that the battery has probably run low after 18 months of ownership.

Obviously at this point the car doesn’t think that the key is in the car so the warning light is on the dash. After returning home I notice that the key won’t lock the door, I’ve put a new battery in the key but still nothing, although I can still start the car if it’s on the Pad.

I’ve took it back to the body shop (not happy with the repair and the key), after some discussions they say I can take the car back into Audi and they will foot the bill.

but I’m finding it very odd that the car will still accept the key but won’t lock or unlock it. Out of curiosity before the car goes into Audi, has anyone encountered this before?

Have you tried the spare key to see if it happens with that one too? That way you will know if it is a key or car issue.

Yeah should have said, I have had to use the spare which works perfectly fine.

All booked in, I imagine il need a new key, unless they can reprogram it to the car, which I doubt is possible..

Just a quick update as I’ve seen a few threads dotted about on different forums relating to a similar issue but no one gave a follow up..

The car went into Audi and they have ordered a new key, apparently the transponder in the key is broken and is being replaced under warranty. According to my local dealer the wait time for a new key is 9 days.

They also carried out a recall on the fuel rail at the same time (1.4 petrol).

What had the body shop done to the key to cause this? Call me cynical but with all this key cloning about you have to wonder.

It does look like they have dropped it, but then if the drop broke it I’m not sure Audi would cover that under warranty.

Could have just been a coincidence that it broke whilst they were in possession of the car...
