Retrofitting Hill Hold Assist

Hello y'all!

I'm a relatively new A4 owner, and so far loving it, although as is in my nature I'm already looking at things that I can tweak/improve...

Specifically, I'm looking at retrofitting Hill Hold Assist, and wanted to know who around the Manchester, UK area would y'all recommend. I'm usually one to have a go at these sorts of things myself, but I'm a little loathe to simply dive in and start messing with my new toy without getting a bit more understanding first, so I'm also preferably looking to find someone who doesn't mind my nosy engineering-background-fuelled face peeking over their shoulder a little :tearsofjoy:.

The self fit kits are €149 for the stronic, €199 for a manual gearbox but obviously more for being fitted.

Honestly I fitted mine myself and didn't take any longer than an hour. It's incredibly simple to do!

Thanks for the info everyone! Decided to bite the bullet and picked up the kit, looks fairly simple in terms of trim removal so not expecting anything too tricksy...

I’ve been thinking about this too. Would be great if you could take some photos when you do it, might convince me to give it a go!

If I'm remembering correctly, it's just two wires. One you splice into the handbrake wire going into the handbrake switch, the other goes to a connection point near the passenger fusebox (sorry can't remember what it's called, might be a plug for the canbus).

You only need to actually remove three pieces of trim, all simple enough to do. I used some splicing clips off Amazon for the handbrake wire.

I also used them for the rear cam canbus connection.

By this do you mean you retro-fitted the rear parking camera? How much effort was it? In particular to get the cable from the boot to the front of the glove box? I'm really tempted to do this, but also just thinking it might be too much effort.

Yep!

It wasn't too much effort but I put a lot of research into it. Took maybe 2-3 hours with another person helping to do stuff like remove trim.

I used Erwin to download all the wiring diagrams, ground locations, trim removal guides etc. All in all it was fairly simple to do, just time consuming. Running the video signal to the glovebox wasn't an issue at all, splicing into the MMI was a huge pain as the wires from the MMI were so short and a pain to access.

Thanks for that - might wait until I've finished helping a family member with a house renovation and then they can owe me one and help me with my car! Did you have to pull the MMI out, or did you manage to just get in and splice it in? I spliced a dashcam into a power cable previously and that was a real pain, so imagine into the MMI wouldn't be easy.

Haha ideal.

If I'm remembering correctly now, I didn't actually need to splice anything into the MMI, the cables came with pins that went into the back of the MMI. I removed the glovebox and pulled the MMI out to get better access to the back of it.

From what I've read it does need to be spliced in, but I'm not entirely sure where! Might be the CANBUS - which if that's under the rear seat the seats don't actually need to come out do they?

Spliced into canbus under rear seat, you just pull the seat up but doesn't need to come out. Also has to go into MMI
 
Good info since I was planning on doing the rear camera after this at some point! Planning on getting a hold of the Erwin files for trim removal, so good to know they're a useful resource on top of everything else.
 
I can have a look in a couple of days if I still have the files saved if you want to save yourself the £8 or however much it is - I have a saloon. If you have an Avant it probably won't be as much use.

I've got a Saloon so if you do happen to have them handy would certainly be nice!

I bought the kit but couldn't fit it myself sadly and I wasnt paying an auto electrician to do it. Still bugs me I dont have it on my car!!!!!

I think you should do it mate! If you need any help with it just ask :)

I would take my car apart and take some photos but I won't have the car for a couple weeks.

There is a wire you have to solder and that's where I sh*t out. It's a no from me! I could always just fit the button and make the interior look a bit nicer!
 
Would of loved to do the camera as well. Just beyond my extremely limited skills with wires and electrics.
 
I can guarantee you don't have to solder anything! Look at those clips I linked above (click the above amazon image). I used those instead of soldering, super easy :)

Appreciate the encouragement but you dont know my limits haha. I should probably flog the kit tbh

If either of you live near knowsley I make a mean brew and have M&S biscuits for when people come and do work on the house. Or car.

I've got the Avant, so will purchase the files. But if you would be kind enough to send them if you find them, it would be good to have an idea of what I've got to do.
