Slightly off topic but I've just spent a couple of days with the new A1 and it has concerned me as I'm worried at the direction Audi are heading with their new cars, most importantly the upcoming A3. I know it's all been said before, but I thought I'd add my two cents.
Firstly, I was expecting the interior to be subpar quality going off other people's reactions to it and my first impression upon getting in the car was wow... Pretty much everything you touch is HORRIBLE plastic, the trim inlays and everything. The only thing which wasn't plastic was on top of the dash. I also found a few things which didn't work properly, such as air vents not staying in place. Another gripe was that the driver side air vents can't be adjusted from side to side! I also found a few bugs with the infotainment system, one of which meant I had to factory reset the system to get the volume to work!
I do like the exterior styling, and so do a lot of people as I got a few positive comments and looks. I know the quality of the car is bad due to of the cost for the A1 being invested in the technology of the car, but I think it was all wasted. The touch screen is horrible, I know it has haptic feedback bla bla bla but when driving along UK roads I found it impossible to hit any of the buttons accurately, and this is coming from someone in their 20's... Also, the screen is an absolute fingerprint magnet. The best part of the experience was using apple car play, which Audi have had for a while now, and personally I think that's all it needs to keep the car current. The A1 was disappointing for me sadly, and my expectations were not very high to begin with. One thing which I should mention is that the 1.5 TFSI engine is amazing (I had manual), I managed to get 45mpg with a heavy right foot and 55mpg even with the car still in the dynamic engine setting, so props to VW group for that.
To summarise, if the overall design of the A3 is anything like the new A1 I think Audi will be making a huge mistake, I already think they are cheapening out somewhat with the S branding on the seats, etc across the S Line and S3. I'd like to know what other people's priorities are, maybe interior quality is only important for the vocal minority.
Apologies for the wall of text, have some pictures I took of the A1.
