2014 Audi A4 1.8 TFSi 100,000 miles needs engine rebuild due to faulty piston ring(s). Flywheel has also now been identified as faulty whilst clutch OK despite no issues prior to the car being taken to Audi. Total repair cost £8.5k excluding small discount offered by the Audi service centre. No issues prior to this and no warning of total engine/transmission failure. Car has full Audi service history and despite writing to Audi about this, they put it down to reasonable wear and tear.
Has anybody else experienced such issues or am I just unlucky???

I’m no expert. At all, in fact.

But surely that’s about £3k tops.

What issues you were experiencing which led you to book the car with Audi, oil consumption??

No oil consumption - engine totally failed after running less than one minute after starting it. No warning lights, no smoke, just total engine failure on one or more cylinders according to Audi which meant car would not start. They say faulty cylinder ring(s) on cylinder three and four.
I understand that rings do wear over time if service schedules are not followed, but this is a five year old Audi maintained vehicle so this is not what I expected.
I was aware that that the earlier tfsi engines had oil consumption problems due to faulty pistons and this was the reason I specifically chose a later year car with the revised pistons rings. My experience however suggests that the rings on these cars are no better than the previous ones and with Audi having discharged liability, leaving me with a £6.5 bill. Thanks Audi!!!

Sorry to hear this, what a nightmare!

Is it an option to try an independent VAG specialist instead of Audi? You’d hopefully see that bill halved.

Thank you and yes, a nightmare. Independent would have been better in hindsight but I had hoped that Audi would have contributed as a gesture of goodwill outside of warranty given the scale of failure. Needless to say, my optimism was misplaced.

Yeah you’d hope they’d be a bit more helpful however I’ve learned not to expect much from main dealers over the years. Is it too late to switch to a independent?

Sorry to hear buddy. I think you should take the approach that piston failure is (or was) pretty common issue on B8 1.8 and 2.0T engines. And just because you've a B8.5, doesn't mean Audi has fixed all the issues on the newer chassis.

I am not sure where you are based but call around, I am sure you'll be able to find a good VAG specialist near you. Get a quote from them.

Re: flywheel, I'll just ignore Audi's advice, for now. It might not be an issue. I won't trust their diagnostics 100%.

Unfortunatle yes as engine stripped dow for inspection. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.......
