Hello, so i have recently been on the hunt for an 8L 1.9 tdi quattro. The seems to be pretty rare... I know people say these engines go on forever, but do you think buying one at the 170k-180k is a mistake? you can find them fairly cheap for this mileage.

I know service history is a must. some of the ones i have seen are "part service history" with various work carried out by the owners themselves. do i just trust them?

Yeah i just need some thoughts and advice, i dont want to buy something that i will regret!

Obviously i know these are old cars so they wont be perfect...

I found a good 2003 1.9tdi Quattrowith 122k on it 18 months ago.
Since then I've done another 25k.
Oil service every 10k.
All the engine and cabin filters every 20k.
Done the timing belt/water pump.
Still need to do the haldex and a clutch kit.

It is a great car, practical and fun to drive.

Certainly not the cheapest to run but the cheapest "economy Quattro" I have found.

I would recommend it as fun & cheap, I'm planning on running on for some time.

That sounds really good. How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking? And where did you find it?

Do you think I should be patient and wait for a lower mileage one to pop up.

I paid 1400 from a dealer, it was listed at 2000 as PX clearance, no warranty.
I ended up with 6 months warranty on engine and drive train.
It has had 2xfront CV joints and a turbo.
The problem is that it runs the risk of becoming "Trigger's Broom" but the youngest of things are nearly 17years old now.

Forgot to include the headlights from Trups.
The more I think about it, the more it sounds like a great buy for someone else.

180k is absolutely nothing for a well looked after 1.9 PD lump... Mine was near 300k when I scrapped it and it still started on the button every time and ran like a dream. Only reason I scrapped it was cos the outside of the car was such a state!
