I got my waterpump and thermostat changed about 2 weeks ago and have just noticed white marks appearing on the outside of the expansion tank as if something has been dripping on it, can anyone tell me what it is this is a pic of it, also the coolant seems to have dropped a little in the 2 weeks since it was changed

Don't know what the white marks are but the coolant level may readjust if you open the tank (when the engine is cold, loosen it a bit first so pressure comes out before opening fully), if not just needs a top up.

Thanks for your help but i am more concerned about the white marks that have appeared just incase i have another coolant leak as last coolant leak was expensive to get fixed

Surely if you just had it repaired and it's still leaking then they should repair this for free?

Ive just went and removed the coolant cap and there was no pressure let out, is this normal or is it just because the car hasnt been started in about 5 hours

If the level hasn’t returned to normal after opening the cap then that’s a bit concerning as it was changed so recently. If refilled properly after the water pump changed, the level should have been about 1cm above the max level, and am inferring it was.

Have these white crusty streaks only appeared since the water pump was changed?

If you take the top off the expansion tank, is the remaining fluid clear or does it have some soap scum floating on it?

Could be a number of causes:

Simple overspill when refilled by garage after pump changed which has now dried out
An airlock in the cooling system
Or something bigger

Suggest taking it back k to the garage - they may just top it up, clean up the expansion tank and ask you to keep an eye on it.

Yes they appeared a day or 2 after waterpump was changed it definetly wasnt there before the work was done, the coolant inside the tank looks clear pink, it looks cleaner inside the tank than it was before the waterpump was changed it was a little bit rusty looking before it but looks a lot cleaner now, i will go back to garage and see what they say about it, thanks

That looks like the coolant has burped due to air in the system. Get it filled to max level when cold and keep a check on it. The 3 series is notorious for air locks when either filled at the factory or on a water pump exchange etc. The white stuff looks like dried spilled coolant as JohnM100 states.

Yes i think it is air in the system that has caused it to leak out a bit, i will fill it up first thing in the morning and keep an eye on it, cheers
