So the S4's been to MRC for the stage 2 magic. The family and I are planning a trip to the alps at Christmas. MRC advised I need an octane booster for dealing with the lower rated fuel in Europe. Just after some advice as to what people use. If they boost up from 95 to 99 or use their super 97-98 and boost up. What if any is the harm if it boosts to high ie a 3 point boost on 98 giving 101? Millers do a 3 point one shot that I was looking at but the rating I start with may vary depending on the brand of fuel in france.

I've been to the Alps several times (Austria. Italy, Switerzland & Germany) and never had any problem getting high octane/super unleaded fuel, all the main routes and towns have garages which sell it. You'll notice a drop in power anyway when in the Alps due to the high altitude.

I agree - I was always able to get "super" on my drives to and from the Alps. But you do realise that you can still use regular unleaded? From my memory of the Alps at Christmas there was no opportunity to use the benefits of a high octane fuel anyway - either due to the traffic or the road conditions.

Thanks for the quick response I believe the best Im going to buy on the pump in France is 98. I've been advised I shouldn't drop below 99 hence the octane booster.
I cant be the first person to take a stage 2 car on their hols. Just wondered what other people do?

No problem with high octane fuell in Europe. Driven thousands of miles the last few years & there is plenty, some over a 100 octane rating but it's not cheap.

Unless your giving it beans everywhere youll probably find a lower octane fuel will cause no issues at all.

Owned a few cars that should run on higher octane as standard, never had issues running them on regular.

Seems a bit much of a muchness IMO.

I carry one in my boot at all times and have had to use it once up in Cumbria when all I could find was BP.

I can’t remember what make it is but I read some test reviews first and picked the 1 that won.

I’d always buy the best you can find and top up from there. There does seem to be a lot of shell garages in Europe so I’d say never miss a chance to top up, even if you’ve still got best part of a tank left!

I hope that the complete advice was actually along the lines of "if you want that full stage 2 performance, always use 99 RON". It is absolutely necessary that your remap retains the function whereby the knock detection results in retarding action. Use of a lower RON fuel will simply reduce performance for a while. As soon as its back to 99 RON it will start to advance back to where it was before.
