Help Please S4 Avant B8 stolen last night

There's a 15 sec delay before the alarm goes off. Gives people using these devices a chance to turn it off before it goes off.

Quote from the instructions on the site that sells these devices

Switching the alarm OFF

This mode of operation is necessary only when all keys are lost. After unlocking the door the alarm will be triggered in 15 seconds. Make SW8 to ON, all others to OFF. Turn on the radio, and switch the lights ON, then put the device into the OBDII. After 4-5 seconds the device will indicate success

For anyone wanting to do the same, snapshot of the adaption for the alarm delay:

Tested with the blade from the keyless key (rest of the key out of range) and sure enough the alarm sounded immediately upon unlocking.

Reading this thread has got me worried, really gutted for the guys who's cars have been stolen. I've only had my A5 for a month and it's my pride and joy, would be devastated if it wasn't there one morning. I havnt got no extra security on it cause thought a top of the range car would be secure, looks like I was very wrong. Been looking at steering locks but all reviews seem to say the same that they are waste of money. What do you guys recommend from experience. Will def be getting Faraday bag aswel.
Thanks

I have:
  • an OBD Port lock to prevent access to the ECU;
  • a Disklok as a visible physical deterrent; and
  • a tracker in case it is stolen.
I'm also considering a Ghost installation.

I personally would get everything available. Steering lock, kill the obd port or reroute it and get a tracker. Everything to slow the process down of steeling it. Driveway alarm also.

It's so wrong that we gotta spend so much money to protect the things we work hard for!! My car is parked on a street when home and when I work away so definitely going to need all additional security measures. Thanks for advice.

I’ve not got anything at the moment because my car is in storage. As soon as it’s out I’ll be getting a ghost, my mate who also has an S4 has 1 fitted and it seems to be the only thing that can stop it going.

I’ll always remember seeing 1 of the car programs years ago, possibly 5th gear where they tested all the different steering locks. Most of them took seconds to remove by someone who knew what they were doing.

Chances are that if someone is taking your car they will check it out a day or 2 before they take it. If it has a steering lock fitted they’ll come suitably tooled up to remove it.

I only have a garage and GAP insurance, but from what I have read it seems that the majority of cars are stolen from driveways so maybe my garage makes all the difference. One thing my insurance policies have always stipulated is that if my car is at home, it must be in the garage overnight.

I guess I might feel different when my GAP expires next year.

The garage is the best security you can have, if they can’t see it they can’t take it. My car is in storage while I have a double garage built to put both cars in, I couldn’t risk leaving it on my drive, even for just a few weeks.

I was given a piece of advice a while back by a friends dad who is a copper. As I turn into the avenues where I live off the main road, I always watch my mirror to see if anyone turns in behind me. If they do I drive straight past my house and round the block again to make sure I’m not being followed before I turn into my driveway and on into the garage.

People think I’m mad for doing it but you never can be too careful

Safe your fuel and just park straight on your drive, best deterrent is a ‘UK shotgun owners club’ sticker on your front door

so sorry to hear another stolen.
One thing I would say is maybe refrain from giving away too much of your security gizmos on here, you never know with stolen to order cars as you might just give them enough info to prepare to take it.

Any steering lock is better than nothing @Gavin powell , as for the most part I believe the thief's are opportunistic, there is a driveway cctv video that was recently uploaded to Stolen cars UK on Facebook, shows a pair of thief's using a key signal relay to unlock a BMW on a gents drive, as soon as the 'driver/thief' opens the car door he calls the other one over, they point at the steering lock and decide to walk away, leaving it wide open... that guys steering lock 100% just saved his car!
and he has since invested in some nice faraday bags to protect his keys from signal relay attacks.

There is a thief(s) now operating where I live and almost daily for a few weeks, people had been coming out to most of the cars on their road being unlocked and trashed inside, obviously not pro's but they have a signal relay device and just try every car and pinch anything they can.. scary!

Well looks like I will be adding ghost to my list of things to do to car along with remap and ceramic coating. Think ghost will be the 1st thing done after this convo

The good thing about a disklock is it is blatantly visible.
There a pain to put on never mind going to the extremes of removing it without a key.
Of course a ghost is probably the ultimate saviour, but said lowlife scum will be already in your car, probably trashing it, before they decide to give up on it.
A disklock is like having a big poo on your steering wheel.
Nobody really wants to go near it in my opinion.

Good point. I forgot to mention that there's a machine-gun turret at the back of my garage.

This may be a daft question but where would one begin to access the VCDS. Does it require something like OBDeleven?

Thanks in advance

VCDS is a software that lets you access the cars control modules to do things like altering functional coding, adapting new parts to the car and monitoring/clearing fault codes etc.

Most people use licenced software and odb2 cables that connect via USB or Bluetooth to a PC with the software.

OBD Eleven is a mobile phone app that lets you connect via their Bluetooth obd2 dongle. The functionality is nearly the same but probably lacks some of the functionality that can be performed via VCDS.

Ok I'm with you. For me to access this and alter the alarm delay what would I need or could someone do it for me etc?

Mine lives on the street due to a garage that was built in the 70's & a drive that is too short to park on. I have a tracker fitted,£12.00 a month but worth it & the '''Stoplock'' pro on the wheel.

I spotted that video about a year ago I think, whichthen made me go out and get an autowatch ghost installed.Sorry to hear about it ,just ********* now days cant have anything nice.

Carista have, thanks to yours truly, just added an option to reduce the time delay between door opening and alarm sounding from factory set 15 secs to 0 sec. Look for

"Anti-theft system delay between trying to open door and alarm firing".

You'll need to used the plastic valet key to open the door without disarming the alarm to test. Tested and working!

Good man! How about if you use the blade from the fobs? I don't have the valet guy :(

As well as the valet key you can also use the blade from the normal keys. However in both instances, you have to wait 60 secs after locking the car to then use the key in the lock to open the door without disarming the alarm to test.

Yep, tested this yesterday with the blade from the fob and set the alarm off as soon as I opened the door :)

I've made the same request to ODB Eleven for a one click app to do this. Let's see if they add it as well.

I'd expect if you ever need to use the key blade to unlock the car, the alarm will sound if you are not quick enough to get the key into the ignition switch, that is how all VW Group security systems work and maybe why by default there is an alarm delay - though I'd rather remove that delay for security reasons for as long as the central locking working properly.

Alarm delay has now been added as a one click app in obdeleven. They was very fast!

Just tried to do this, couldn’t find the option in my version of Carista.
