Anyone here fitted one of the clutch bypass harnesses?

Finally got round to fitting mine, all gone in no problems, no faults...

Started car first time without clutch being depressed so all good there, but the engine start up sounds clunky, almost like a diesel sound!?

If I just push clutch in it starts up as normal.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced similar?

Cheers

I have had one in my S3 for 3yrs now and have never noticed any difference in the sound when starting but it does help the live time off the clutch

I can’t quite figure out what it could be.

Is it like a knocking noise? I have a knocking noise but when I put clutch in it goes away... maybe it’s same problem?

Yeah, bit of a knock when it first bursts into life. Just sounds abit rough.

But only the initial start up, then it all sounds fine

We have the bypass installed in 2 carsand there is no difference to the sound. Have someone start the car and have a listen under the bonnet. When your foot is on the clutch it is all under tension. No tension with the bypass and so any movement in the dual mass flywheel etc might be magnified as it shakes a bit up start. I don’t think the Golf Mk 5 has the push to start message anyway and so nothing to worry about. Try seeing if you put a bit of pressure on to take up any slack, does it still make the noise? Also, noises are magnified in the cabin.

Mine never really tends to go, hot or cold weather, long/short/fast/slow drive it’s always there when parked and in neutral :/

Try starting it with the harness plugged in whilst having the clutch pedal pressed and observe the sound.

Yeah I’ve done both.

So harness is attached...

Start up with no clutch pedal, initial sound it’s clunky then upto idle revs fine.

Start up with clutch pedal down it starts like always, normal sound.

Update***

First 2 starts of the engine with no clutch sounded ok, then it developed the noise once warm.

Again, if I just start up even when warm, with clutch pedal pressed. It sounds fine.

So the harness has triggered something that makes it sound a little clunky at start up. Don’t get it! Hmmm!

If noise is there with the harness installed can you not just remove harness and see if it makes a difference and if it does then you have your culprit and if not then it's not the harness and then you have eliminated one problem

The noise wasn’t there before the harness, and when I press the clutch in and start the car the engine sounds as normal.

It’s only when I start the car without pressing the clutch that the noise appears.

So it’s something to do with the harness.

I can just take it off... but I’m just throwing it out there to see if anyone had had similar

Seems your replies are saying that they have never had a problem with there one , so if you have a problem with it on the best thing would be to take it off and investigate .

For sure never had the strange noise before. I put it on 3 days ago and the odd noise appeared.

So I will take to mechanic see if they can suggest anything if not will have to take it off.

I don’t think it is the harness that is causing the problem. It is the fact that when you push the clutch pedal everything is under tension. If you do not depress the clutch pedal, any “free play or tolerance” may be making the noise you are talking about. It maybe that there is a little play in the gearbox input shaft that just gives a slight sound as the engine is started. The harness was developed to prevent the crankshaft thrust washers from wearing before oil circulation if an uprated clutch with strong pressure plate springs is being used.

are these only for cars without stop start i read it dont work well with stop start cars just a an idea ???

Going by what you have said in your post it's the harness that is the problem but problem wasn't there before the harness was fitted , so firstly I gather you never fitted the harness cause if you did you would know how to remove before you pay a garage to take it off , so best just remove and then see if problem persists if it does then simple elimination says it's not the harness , not being rude but some people find problems that are not there especially noise

I fitted the harness on Monday.... I can easily take it off, what I’m trying to establish is wether it’s found an underlying problem?

I’m thinking about taking it to a garage so they can hear the noise I’m in about, as when I take the harness off the noise will surely go as I will be pressing the clutch in again from now on when I start.

Exactly. I just need to establish the noise is normal...

If it is, then I can live with it, knowing my crankshaft thrust washers aren’t being so worn.

I’m not suggesting the harness IS the problem, only that it has created a strange noise... or at least, when I start up without clutch pressed it has created a noise.
