New Facelift S4 (with Photos)

At least the next Mercedes C Class will not compete in that area as it also looks like they are dumping all other control of the car's systems for just one single touchscreen as well....

Funny how the rotary wheel/touchpad has become Marmite. I'm pretty ambivalent whether it stays or goes. What I don't like is having everything controlled from the touchscreen. For example, in the Jaguar XE that I briefly had, it took three touches of the screen just to switch on the heated seats.

It doesn't matter about the wheel, per se, but, as you state, an alternative method of using the car's systems instead of using, what is, a glorified mobile phone interface...

Is that Lincoln Audi? I’m local so might go and have a look myself
@Bells Yes Lincoln Audi. Only the diesel version is being offered in the UK as the it's the Germans who wanted a Diesel S4. So the Sales Manager told me.

Fake noise giving it a V8 sound, as if being diesel wasn't nasty enough! Audi what are you up to :(

@terminator x It's not fake noise! Where the heck did you get that from??
I stood outside it when it was driving. Definitely real noise. Have you never heard a Audi 3.0TDI V6 before? It's a nice noise but on the S4 it definitely sounds better (in a mechanical way NOT fake way)

Looks lovey but shame its a diesel. I think the removal of the mmi wheel is a misstate.

@LeMans I'm glad they got rid of the MMI wheel. It ALWAYS misreads the letters I have written on it! Unless you are left handed, its useless to right handers. I have taken to sending my destinations from my phone to the car. So much quicker. I can save 5-10mins than using the frustrating and darn right annoying MMI wheel.

I was expecting two touch screens like the other new audi's. I'd much prefer a touch screen like this and the original heating controls, best of both worlds. Using the dial to operate Android Auto is a right pain. Shameful that both exhausts are fake and blocked off though. If the car still sounds good, i don't see the problem with diesel, you get the extra torque and performance along with economy.
@liveseytowers It was never going to have 2 touchscreens like the A6 etc as that would be a complete redesign. This is just a facelift, so anything like that would be in a new model.

Getting rid of the touchpad is the worst thing they've done, only second to using a devil's engine, but that's been well documented. When legislation comes in, which I very much feel it will, that turns off the touchscreens whilst on the move Audi will have a problem.
@cuke2u There is no way that is going to happen! People use hands free quite safely. If that's the case, they would have to ban people using the radio when driving, touching buttons, eating & drinking etc etc, even speaking to passengers! Everything is a distraction but hands free is not more distracting than anything else in a car.

Far more dangerous is average speed cameras as they force drivers to spend more time looking at their speedo than the road, hence why you always see more rear end collisions in those areas covered by average speed cameras!

Well they are being looked at, in car technology has come further than just using a radio, there is far more you need to do than just change channels or alter the volume, and you can do that with the steering wheel buttons with most cars anyway. They have become distracting, I've tried putting in a destination with our fiesta's sync system whilst on the move and you have to concentrate so much and bumps quite easily result in a wrong press.
I would say there is now far more you can do than with a mobile phone and I'm sure your argument was put forward when steps were being taken to ban those.
They need to disable many of the functions whilst the car is on the move and force the driver to set things up before they commence a journey..

The exhaust pic speaks for itself. The new front end is over fussy in its design and the side looks odd with those two lines that start from the front and back but then fade to nothing (especially the one from the front). Rear I quite like aside from the exhausts.
Inside its a crime the MMI wheel is gone - BMW and Merc have both touchscreen and a way to input or navigate manually - the screen is now too big to be stuck on the dash but they didnt really have much option.
Throw in the price increases and there really isnt much that appeals for me. Its a 3 litre diesel A4 with a bit more power and fancy seats. You also dont have as much freedom with speccing options anymore.

It is fake, there is a noise generator in the exhaust!

Thinking of the reasoning behind the fake outlets. The S range is identifiable by quad exhausts, in the same way that RS is synonymous with twin ovals.
Maybe a single exhaust was used as part of a weight-saving exercise, so Audi used fakes on one side to keep the "S look" intact?

Not much of a weight saving with 700Nm of torque, minimal emissions but a heck of a lot in terms of cost....

its actually worse than i expected. why bother with the fake exhausts. i would feel quite embarrassed as most keen drivers will know those exhausts are fake. Its like the M sport bwm vehicle owners who stick a fake M badge on their cars.

the move to touch screen is a big no no in my opinion. my mate has a seat ateca with a touch screen and its ****** dangerous to use when travelling. i am amazed that drivers are allowed to use touch screens when in motion as you have to concentrate on the screen when driving. its no different to using a mobile phone. at least with jog wheel you can still keep your eyes on the road as you can see what you need to see on the display in front of the steering wheel. reaching across when driving is awkward.

Also those looking at buying a £50,000 car are unlikely to be overly concerned with a cars efficiency. You may as well save some money and get a high specified diesel A4

with the way the government is coming down on diesels who knows whats going to happen in the future ie further emission rule changes.
