I'm running a '97 2.8 Quattro, mainly as a track car, and it could really do with better brakes. Its currently got the 280-ish mm discs on the front, but obviously far bigger will fit inside 17" wheels I normally run.
I guess the question is either....
1 Which later (fairly common) model could I nab a set of discs and (more critically) calipers from, which will fit on the existing hub?
Or if thats a no-no....
2 Which later (fairly common) model would be best to nab the whole hub assemblies off, ideally with all the rest intact.
Or even....
3 Would a set of hubs from an '03 A6 Allroad fit, and/or even if they did, would they be overly heavy?
What do you reckon?

Straight 288mm to 312mm with 312 caliper carriers ??

Sounds like a good place to start, but where's the best place to get them from?
I guess at a pinch I could swap them off the wife's '04 A4 1.8t ragtop, but it runs a bit against the grain.
Nothing bigger about though, Allroad seems to be about 330?

Errrr...... Correct about the calipers and pads, but unfortunately the '04 carrier doesn't fit on the 97 hub, so that was a wasted afternoon.
Not a total loss (changed the pads on the wife's car while I was putting it back together) but hasn't done anything for the Quattro's stopping power.
So any other ideas?

OK, so here's a (probably) stupid thought. In addition to my A4 Quattro and the wife's A4 cabrio I also have 3 A6 Allroads (I like them OK) of which 2 are running and 1 is donating parts. How about if I swap the whole disc/caliper/upright/arm caboodle onto the A4 in one go? Will it fit in the first place (I know the arms will) and would it do so much harm to the unsprung weight I might as well not bother?

If your after good brakes without adding too much unsprung weight I have a brembo 18z 6 pot setup with alloy uprights for sale, everything needed apart from discs and pads, discs are cheap (under £100 for grooved/drilled/dimpled etc) as you use merc ml55 discs and pads range depending on your needs, ferodo premiers are around £40 for the set but if it’s mainly track use then ds2500 would be my choice but they’re considerably more expensive

Calipers just need a clean up and fresh paint, bolts and hoses are new and never fitted, uprights ready to bolt on

Sounds interesting! What size discs are those, and what are you looking for?

Hi Chris, from my understanding there are two sizes of bolt centres, the B5 A5 uses the smaller bolt centres and the B6 uses the larger bolt centres.

Iirc the B5 S4 uses the larger bolt centres.

The mk1 TT 225 uses the smaller bolt centres (so will fit B5 struts) and also fit the B5 calliper using the 312mm disc. Iirc I paid £50-£60 for the 225 brackets.

I used the 312mm discs from my B6 1.8t Bex. (Not sure if all B6 1.8t got 312mm discs)

These are the same part number as my C5 Allroad 2.7t discs.

I haven’t tried the Allroad calliper on the B5, but did read somewhere that they are quite bulky, so only fit under some 17(?)” Wheels.

B5 S4 uprights will retain the current lower control arms and give you larger calliper spacing but leave you with press fit bearings, if you go B6 uprights you will need to swap out the lower control arms for the 16mm BJ/control arms the B6/B7 uses and give you the benefit of bolted wheel bearings/hubs.

Id personally recommend S4 B6 345mm fronts with 300mm B6 rear disc and S4 B5 calipers and adapters and braided hoses worked perfectly on my B5 TQS i had

^^^ This

I run this setup on my b5 s4 running circa 450hp. It is more than adequate for fast road but if you are tracking you may need to spend ££££ more depending on your cars power.
Calipers appear on various sites circa £200. Discs and pads are for nothing.
You will need the b5 s4 hubs uprights and driveshafts possibly (someone correct me if i am wrong). I was going to do this on my old tqs and am sure someone advised me this.
Anyway if you do go this route, i can help you out with a few bits i have from an s4 i broke a few yrs back.

I ran the 312mm upgrade with TT caliper carriers, was more than enough braking power.
S4 B6 345mm fronts with 300mm B6 rear disc
sounds interestingly more powerful, but probably cost an arm and a leg in comparison to the 312mm swap.
