I like android auto but I can't get it to reveal itself in MMI consistently and sometimes it feels like it's starting from fresh again like a new phone.

Sometimes I get in and plug USB in and it's fine, other times AA just just turn up in menu no matter how many times I put usb in and out?

Is there a knack to doing it, like plug in phone before engine start, or maybe the other way around?

I have a Galaxy S8 at present although I'm going to order a S10 in next 7 days if that helps matters?

I always unlock the phone and open the app I want it to go to first, usually Google Maps, and then plug it in.
Then when the MMI has loaded up it usually goes straight to Apple CarPlay (in my case) but I guess its the same principle.
I think unlocking the phone first is the key, don't just plug it in.

Maybe you could install the Samsung "Good Lock" app and then the "Routines" plug in for it.
You could then set up a routine on your phone that when it connects to your vehicle (either bluetooth or USB) it would then launch AA on your phone.
Could be worth a try.

Try a different cable too, I had a flaky connection (CarPlay tho) and it's bombproof after I swapped it out.

I've managed to get a consistent connection by only plugging the phone in after I have started the engine. I've not had to unlock the phone before doing so.

There is a known issue with Huawei phones. The nack is the have the phone unlocked and screen on when you connect the phone. Seems to work for me so worth a try.
