Hi guys,

My car developed this horrible grinding noise a couple of months ago, and I'm having a nightmare trying to fin what is actually causing it.

It seems to be coming from the front brakes area, when the car is moving.... then stops when the car is stationary but seems to change in tone when you hit the brakes. It sounds like metal to metal grinding almost like a stone/rock is lodged somewhere and rubbing against the discs.

However, I searched around the forum previously for answers.
So far I replaced the discs and pads all around. The discs look like they had seen better days...there was like a circular ring around the discs where the metal had corroded off all together.

I also replaced the front splash guards...checked to see if any stones were stuck there etc.

Anything else to check before I book it into a garage?

Thanks

Wheel bearing ? Have you rotated the wheels while in neutral and jacked up? If you still can't isolate it then remove the caliper and rotate again

Yes, I have done...but I only checked if the disc were catching on the splash guards. How would I check to see if the wheel bearing is at fault? Also would a failed bearing sound like metal to metal grinding?

Thanks :)

If it's failed to a point it can make a grinding sound yes.

If you jack it up and check 12 and 6 o'clock play it may indicate something.

Also when you're driving you can steer left or steer right to load up each side of the wheel bearings and see if the noise increases or decreases.

What type of disks did you install?

When did the noise start.

OK, I will check for play in the wheel.
I was watching some YouTube videos last night on failed wheel bearings. And funnily enough, before I changed the discs, I did notice the noise seemed to change slightly depending on which way the steering wheel was turned, when driving along. Whether the
Need to double check which side.

The discs and pads I bought from Euro Car Parts.
The noise started a couple of months ago. It seemed to be not as apparent after I changed the brakes, but is still there. Luckily I have a second car, but really would like to get to the bottom of what's causing the issue.

Similar issue here. Tends to be when breaking lightly when first in the car?? Then if I break relatively hard or say a long pull on the brakes such as pulling off a motorway it disappears. But does this every day. Called into local Audi centre and service dept woman said it is quite common especially at this time of year but was nothing to worry about.
Still a bit crap hearing it every day!

Quick update.

Jacked that car up and looked for play on all 4 wheels. My god....the play on the front passenger side was shocking to say the least. Time for a new wheel bearing then I guess.

Fingers crossed. Is there anything that would cause such excessive play? After watching some tutorials, I've been thinking about tackling the job myself.
Looking at this, I have all the tools apart from a 12mm triple square socket and a breaker bar extension:

Check the ball joints too if it's 12 and 6 o'clock play.. or 3 and 9 o'clock most likely track rod ends!

Quick update guys.

Just to confirm...it was infact my wheel bearing that was at fault. Thanks for all your input.

Pleased you got it sorted mate. Mine too, took it in for a service and mentioned it. Picked up from service with new pads and discs under warranty:)
