TFSI v TDI Best value purchase

Hi all

May I please ask for some advice on the most efficient engine for the B9 S Tronic 2019 spec.

I am looking at a range of nearly new Avants, 35 and 40 Petrol and Diesel.

I do around 8000 miles a year, mainly local trips, occasional longer journeys.

What are owners of the respective engines seeing as real world MPG?

Given the choice any combination in SLine or Black Edition what should I choose?

If you are taking best value then purchasing a diesel will not represent this. Sales of new diesel have plummeted and continue to do so. This must bleed through to the used market eventually.
As for real world mpg, both honest john and what car publish figures to make a comparison plus, if you search this forum the answers are there...

I would say petrol is probably the way to go for mostly shorter journeys and lower annual mileages regardless of any other consideration.

Strange that in the north of ireland we love our diesel cars regardless. I would say for 8k annual miles, the petrol would be the smarter choice especially for shorter journeys. I’d put the money into a auto box if I were the op.

So in terms of performance should I opt for the 35 or 40 Petrol?

The car will certainly have the Auto box.
 
I think either really, both seem to be well suited to the stronic gearbox, whilst the 35 is no slouch if you wish to have that extra overtaking grunt then the 40 does it. As for mpg, expect around 30mpg average for the 40 around town and 45+ on a longer journey on A roads, more if cruising on a motorway.
The 2.0l engine is a peach though, certainly in the one I have. Smooth refined and very quiet, I expect the 35 is too as they are the same engine, but detuned and without the Miller cycle.

In terms of value it will entirely depend on the number of miles you do. I drive 20k+ miles a year. The fuel savings on diesel over 3-4 years easily cover the initial higher purchase costs. Even with higher depreciation if the bottom falls out of the diesel market (sales have dropped but not plummeted), I’d still be quids in.

But for 8k miles a year, diesel is not the way to go.

I've had a 35 TFSI since Feb. I've done approx 6000 miles in it and my long term average is currently 38mpg but its gone up recently as i've had a few long motorway runs were i'm getting almost 50mpg. Before then it was sat around 36mpg for the long term.

What i've noticed is that the MPG is pretty poor during short runs and whilst the engine warms up. If i'm pottering around locally i can often get less than 30mpg, but its really hilly where I live so i'm up and down hills all the time. You'll have the same problem with all of the cars though if you are doing short journeys, guess it depends what your definition of short is. When i do my 10 miles to work i can get 45mpg but its a mixture of traffic, downhill roads, ring road and then motorway. Same run on the way back with more traffic, uphills i normally get 36mpg.

Also i didn't realise it was a mild hybrid, i did wonder what the green battery icon was for when i'm breaking.
 
Extremely mild hybrid where it really only has regenerative braking whereas the 2020 A4 will have a bit more...

My 2 pence worth:

8000 miles. 30mpg petrol vs 50mpg diesel gives about £540 difference. You'll likey average more in a petrol and might go below 50 in a diesel doing so few miles. Depreciation even for a 2-3 year old car is likely to be 5 x that. Servicing about the same and tyres probably better in a lower torque petrol. Get the one you, want forget the pittance either way.
 
Yes 30 mpg is urban, 50mpg is on a run. Totally depends upon the driving conditions and I doubt if 50mpg is achieved constantly by a diesel on a cold winters day with a short commute as you suggest..
 
New petrols aren’t that bad, used to get low 30s mpg on my old A4 2.0 tdi on my 9 mile commute and in my new 3l petrol M140i I get mid-to-high 20s and sometimes even low 30s for that same commute. I expect it to get better over time as I’ve only done 5500 miles so far
