Got home today fuming. Was driving slowly home in crawling traffic when some **** in a 52 plate Jag S type came steaming past overtaking and smashed my drivers side wing mirror. Broken the cover and smashed the glass (heated and dimming), nearly took out the car coming the opposite direction and the guy behind me. The rest of the lower housing and indicator is OK but the mirror is bent so far forwards I can't bring it back. The lane assist seemed ok.
I have it on dash cam, he didn't stop. A quick search of his plate (DF52 EOO incase anyone's interested) seems to show an active MoT but no insurance (no shock there). Insurance wise, im comp. Cars financed.
From a quick google check the heated and dimming glass is around £300ish (if anyone has the part that'd be great).
So, do I report to insurers it as I should by the letter of the insurance law and small print and see my premiums go up as a result of being in the wrong place minding my business or just fix it out of my pocket and leave as is. Has anyone had any experience of insurers reporting these instances to police if the guy is uninsured as at this point I'd suck up a financial hit on insurance premiums for the next 5y if there is a chance he'll get his car crushed if he's not insured.
Or in general has anyone had experiences claiming on a policy (hastings in my case) if the other party is uninsured?
Its **** that you can't have anything nice that care about around people

Fix it yourself.

No need to get insurance involved

It’s not great agreed but like car park dings these things do happen......

Don’t tell insurers. Not worth it for a £300 mirror, not to mention excess costs. Then it’ll put your premiums up. Basically, you’ll be worse of financially and they won’t do ****** all to the Jag driver. One of those unfortunate things.

Bu99er is a swear word?! :scared2:

Thanks guys. I am heading down that avenue.
Was hoping someone would have a tale of retribution where to***rs like this jag driver get comeuppance enough to justify the insurance hit. In a way I would have rather just given him the £500 it's probably going to cost to make it right and not had the aggro of bits of wing mirror hanging off for a few days whilst I source the glass and a new cover. Winds me up. I may look into sending the dashcam footage off to the police, but I bet if do and I haven't reported the accident to the insurers I'll end up in worse bother that the **** who has hit me.

Similar situation happened to me. Guy in a 57 plate A3 S-Line plants his foot on the accelerator down a tight road whilst I was stationary and smacks my mirror and shatters the mirror cap.

I sent the dashcam footage to the police and within a couple of weeks they were knocking on his door for failing to stop at an accident and then asked me if I either want to proceed with charges or grab his contact details and talk it through with him. I chose the latter because all I wanted to do was give the guy a bit of a fright for not stopping as I think it's one of the scummiest things you can do to obviously hit someone and not have the morals to stop; he clearly didn't have the money to pay for the damage so I let him off the hook to avoid going through insurance.

Technically speaking after an accident (no matter how small it is) there is 48 hours to alert the police to it, but it's not illegal or a requirement to report to your insurance so police wouldn't give a toss if you did or didn't tell your insurer - at least that's what the police constable told me.

Thanks for this - sorry to hear this happened to you too. I've reported the accident and got a new glass ordered from @creweaudiparts as its nice to support a sponsor!

I think I may be able to salvage the mirror cap with a bit of epoxy for the clips as the sheared off ones were still rattling around the base

We'll see what comes of it - hopefully something...

****** Audi drivers!!
Surprised the police gave out his contact details though, DPA and all that, but glad you had the opportunity for a face 2 face, you showed good restraint too :salute:, don't know if I could have.:boxing:

Good idea reporting it mate. Be careful that none of those little clips sheared off and slipped straight down into the folding mirror mechanism... happened to me and they're an absolute ball ache to get out trust me! Fingers crossed you can salvage it, but if not then have a think about getting a set of genuine Audi carbon fibre mirror caps and some fancy sweeping dynamic side indicators to cheer yourself up like I did.

Think they own the roads these ****** Audi drivers! :icon thumright:

It did take some restraint I must admit. I was red with rage at the time after he shot off... pulled a 3 pointer and chased after him (up to the speed limit of course!) and after a while forced myself to pull over, stop and take the legal route before I did something silly.

Police paid him a visit and gave me his full address and phone number right away; safe to say that he had his tail between his legs when I mentioned the cost of replacement parts for these cars...

After I managed to get the housing the right side of the restraints it became obvious the supporting arm to the door frame is bent. I'm going to have to go through insurance as although I plan on keeping this car for long term I can't risk this damage incase I do hand it back at the end of the finance.
Have had to ask Tom at crewe audi to cancel the glass order as there's no point paying for that at present. Even more fuming now...

Although not everyone's tastes I have the carbon mirror caps.
Just heard back from the police and cars not registered or insured.
Gutted.

I hope the police have it as a wanted car /driver and intend stopping it asap.I believe it could be made a national watch for this car .

That's pretty shocking, although given what the police have said, it sounds in hindsight a very good decision to give up the chase - who know's what kind of character was in it. Lets hope the insurers are super-helpful !

Thanks.
Insurers were OK - it's always a pretty sh***y conversation especially as it's pretty much treated as a fault claim in the setting of 3rd party not being insured as my policy will have to pay out. Even though I was pretty much stationary and minding my own business when he hit me and have it all recorded on dashcam. I'm getting the car appraised for repairs with dealership on Thursday next week. It's not going to be worth claiming if the repair quote is under 1k or so by the time I've coughed up excess and seen policy rise for the next 5y I have to declare it.
I got a surprise tax rebate for 1600 last week and was wondering how to spend it... Guess this seems to have answered that.
As @T-800 put it, these things happen. At least no one hurt and hopefully the licence plate and car (I suspect on different plates by now) will be on the police radar.

you do realise if you have told your insurance about the accident it will have to go on your insurance regardless of whether you claim or not and your insurance will still go up. They use a risk profile to work out your quote and yours has just went up as it will count as an accident regardless of fault or claim**

**thats the terminology they use when its quote time

Yes.
I am very much aware of this. Policy price is influenced by number of claims regardless of fault and also the cost of those claims to the insurer, if I choose not to claim I declare a non fault accident at renewal with nil cost attached. That should not dramatically alter my renewal (hopefully), but it will increase, as it does if you get windscreen repair.
By declaring the accident (which the small print of the policy states you must even though common sense dictates no one would if you can sort it out yourself - as accidents had = more risk in the eyes of the insurers as you pointed out and they want to know about it!) my policy will be affected for 5y even though I was sat stationary minding my own business. Thing is, if this damage is significant enough to cost more than 1k to rectify I estimate it will still be cheaper to run through the insurers. Its nuts that some selfish gentleman's appendage with no regard for safety or the property of other people has left me this out of pocket, but I can do nothing about it.
I do hear some councils are reporting claims for wheel damage to insurance agencies to see if people are declaring those 'accidents'...
Basically it's all frustrating ****

You can claim through the motor insurance bureau (I think it's called as I believe they have some insurance policy for uninsured drivers involved in smashes, you should check it out as this should no way be a claim on your policy.

I'll have a look into this.

Unfortunately the MIB will not compensate in this case as part of the requirement is that you need to provide the details of the uninsured driver i.e. name and address. You also see a lot of insurance companies boldly advertise a ‘uninsured driver promise’ as if to say it’s some extra benefit they offer in an attempt to entice new customers, but all the claims are handled by the MIB under the same terms so nothing new as it’s been available to all third parties for decades.

Oddly, MIB do pay compensation if you’ve been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver and suffer physical injury as a result, even if you’re unable to provide the personal details of the uninsured driver. You just need to prove an incident occurred, such as dash cam footage.

I would send the dash cam footage to the mib and also info that the police do not have the details of the registered keeper /driver ( so how are you supposed to get them )and see if they will help you after that. Worth a try .

Wow, that is hit and run.....If that happened to me my insurance company would pay and no upcharge on renewal time. I would have to pay the deductible though.....250 quid. I live in Vancouver, Canada. Also, if I had an accident and even if I was deemed at fault. I would not lose my no claim bonuses, as I have not had an accident claim in 10 years and that is the cut off time for that exclusion.....actually much longer for no accidents but I don't want to tempt fate.

You have to provide name and address of the uninsured driver. Wtf. Do you need telepathy skills for this? Just moronic

How can the mib state this ?as that is discriminating against the people not hurt in the hit and run /bump other driver no insurance .
They are just asking for all involved in suspected no insurance cases to claim for whiplash / back pain etc etc illegally.
I would as said send all the info including the police have no details .
I know I keep harping on to send the info etc but surely they cannot get away with this !
