People are now expecting premium tech and quality in smaller segment cars now too. The question is how Audi continue to evolve their range. We could quite easily see the A4 with similar technology to the smaller cars but matched with higher quality trims and materials, more sound dampening etc. rather than just becoming a slightly smaller A6. 2021/22 or whenever a new A4 model comes out should be interesting.

+1. Looks more of a knee-jerk reaction to poor sales of the model which Audi says is their bread & butter.
The A6, as a vehicle, is wider than the A4. Also the wide distance in the A4 between seats & doors is for increased side collision protection.
Agreed, which was what I was saying, the goalposts have moved, but not by enough with the A4 to keep up and make it a class leader...
Also interesting to see the rollout of TFSI e (PHEV). So far Audi will start with A6, A7 Sportback, A8 and Q5 and at some point A4 I guess, if they can fit battery and motor without making it too heavy. They promise 40km range on battery using the WLTP measuring method.

So my appointment with my dealer was a waste of time. They had no information on specs, prices or lead times. Unsurprisingly, they did say the list price would go up in line with inflation.
I have never been a lover of BMW but out of curiosity I decided to spec 2.0-litre petrol 3 Series M Sport. I can have everything I have on the A4 and more for £38k before discounts. Ok, it's not four wheel drive, but a similar spec Sline MY19 comes in at £41k. I think this is a shrewd move by BMW because you can get a well spec’d car for less than £40k. Hence, avoiding the dreaded showroom tax.
I'm not about to jump ship to BMW, I'm just looking about to help me decide what to do when my agreement comes to an end.

Dealerships will not have information of, or be allowed to release, on the details and pricing of the next A4 model unless instructed too by Aude DE. At the moment dealerships are offering my19 models at cost price, to shift it out of the showrooms, plus £1. So now is the time, if anyone is interested to pop down to their dealership as there are some good deals to be had. I doubt if the discounts on the new BMW 3 series is anything approaching that. However, to be fair, they should be compared like for like...
Cost price plus £1 won’t be that cheap - dealers make their money from the payments they get for hitting targets, so you really need them to be dipping into that, which will require some further negotiation.
On the BMW side, the car list price is cheaper, you can get a £6k deposit contribution (& more as you move up the range) from Inchcape dealers before further negotiations, and as you might be able to avoid the showroom tax, that’s potentially another £1600 saving if you plan on keeping the car long term.
An Audi A4 S Line S Tronic with Tech Pack 2l diesel 150bhp was always around £32k via brokers. A BMW 3 Series M Sport 320d Auto 320d (190bhp) is advertised at £31,275 after deposit contribution, so opportunity for more money yet to be negotiated off. Even with whatever “deals” dealers are pushing, I think the BMW will still be slightly cheaper - the deals are quite amazing for such a new car!
That is a good deal, but the only one I can find with that deposit contribution with Inchcape is on a diesel, I don't buy diesels and doesn't compete with any options I would have. Therefore not like for like.

Does anyone know when the MY20 models can be factory ordered? Do folks think a 190ps diesel quattro model will be available from the beginning?
I would have thought so as Audi have promoted that engine in the past....
Yeah I know the A4 usually comes in that engine variant, i wanted to know if the A4 My2020 190 diesel quattro would be made available at the beginning once the A4 My2020 can be ordered. Audi usually have a habit of not releasing all engine variants at once once a new model is released, so I guess its a case of wait & see! Thanks anyway
I think that combination was available from the beginning with the b9, and as this is a facelift, not a new model, I can't see why it wouldn't be...
Orders should be possible from week commencing 8th July (i.e. next week sometime). It’s not yet clear whether the 190 diesel Quattro will be available from the outset.

That looks nice and could be my next car, especially if the interior is more like the A4. Like you, I really don't need the size of the A4, so the a better A3, or of course the CLA, are definitely contenders. That said, I'm happy with the A4 and may well end up keeping it anyway.
Would be nice if Audi hadn't delayed it, I don't believe for one minute it's down to dieselgate though...
We're now into August and still nothing on the Audi website wrt the My20 A4.... Come on Audi, get a move on!
Perhaps they are reconsidering their options. I know from the conversations I have had with the General Sales Manager at my dealer Audi have been caught out by the pricing structure for the new 3 Series and C Class. He went on to say that they cannot rely on brand loyalty to meet sales targets.

I bought the Audi A4 avant My2019 facelift and I can see that the MY2020 is delivered with more equipment as standard so I could have saved some money if I had waited for the 2020.
But done is done and I'm not that into the touchscreen and liked the MMI click wheel and the old VC UI design. Properly gonna miss out on some of the new feature but to me it is not that clear how much actually differs. This goes especially for the 190hk TFSI motor, the configurator now says 'Advanced Prestige Tour 40 TFSI S tronic', and the word Advanced is new but I have no idea what this covers. Perhaps improvements to the mildhybrid system?

It's not on the main Audi UK site, but you can use the dealer car configurator to configure / price the UK 2020 A4/S4 if you want: has been on there for 2-3 weeks now I think.
At the moment, often as not with Audi, different engine/transmission combinations do appear after time...
I know different countries have different opinions on the configurator - I was hopeful the SS seats would be an option on the s line (as they appear to be on Audi.de) but it doesn’t appear so. I might be the only person that the S4 diesel might suit - it was completely out of the question due to mileage and fuel consumption before when it was a petrol
Can't see matrix headlamps to add in a similar configuration to my car so wondering if they will be added later. Looks also like Matador Red has been dropped..
Also no Avant model showing up yet and only the option of 19" rotors. On the plus side, it seems the Black Edition now comes with Tech Pack as standard including Virtual Cockpit Plus screen. Audi taketh with one hand and giveth with the other...
I don’t think you’ll be alone my friend. For anyone doing mucho miles it makes sense. Although can say the petrol remains a pleasant surprise over longer distances!
