Speed Camera POI

For me it's about having the POIs integrated into the screen in the car, It'd be a hassle to load the relevant app every time, keep the phone powered up etc. I also don't want to have to mount my phone in the car, (essential if your keen to avoid tickets). All relevant phone features safe for use when driving are surfaced through bluetooth.
sat nav on that dash or from audi sucks .. best is smartphone ..

I paid for the UK POI base and updated the mmi via an SD card. I have made sure they are enabled under "Map Content" but I don't get any audible warning when approaching speed cameras. the map shows the speed limit but nothing audible.

Any idea what I need to do? Audio is enabled on the nav for directions.

You need to go into the settings under the Map/navigation part and click on “arrival notification”. You need to also click up to ten categories which you select to show up with audio. I forget exactly where it is under the settings but it’s in the map part somewhere. You can select all to show up on the MMI but only 10 for an audible notification

does this only give audible alerts when you've set a destination?

Nope. Always on. But remember that you only get 10 audible notification categories. The rest are all silent but pop up on the MMI. POI base did group a lot of cameras recently so it’s helped cut down on the categories, I still have too many to get all audible though!

I presume English isn't your first language, so I may be misunderstanding your meaning, but I don't agree with what I think you are saying.

Having the nav with speed camera alerts built in and automatically on is vastly superior to having to plug in a phone and start an app for every journey.

as I said get Waze on android ... BEST ;)

Having had a speed camera option, on a Garmin, a TomTom and also on my now sold BMW X3 xDrive 30d MSport, I can honestly say they all suck to a degree in one form or another.
In my opinion, one of the best all rounders where you can configure almost all of the warnings to suit you, is the Cheetah C550. See....
https://speedcheetah.com/ I have one in my car and one in my wife's and they are hard wired in. Both are up high adjacent to the mirror and not in the line of sight and do not distract the driver.

Sorry mate but youre late to the party! everyone is fitting these and have been for yrs! The one you fitted is a relativly new design. Clearmounts has been the best phone holder for the A3 for yrs. The reason why people are activating sat nav on their Audis is because of integration and ease of use. I got mine activated at a cost of 500 last year and if needed i would do the same again. I now have VC and CarPlay as i changed cars but the integration and the fact that you have all maps on the VC and so on is just easier. Each to their own.... But you wont be convincing anyone. EVERYONE knows waze, EVERYONE knows TomTom, EVERYONE knows all the apps and extra little advantages or flaws that each system has. My 71yr old dad has Waze and Tom Tom. He uses them side by side on his campervan. Its personal preference, not lack of knowledge!

Who says about of lack of knowledge? Not me..
And don't worry man am not late at party had audi a3 2011 since 2016..
Now I traded in to 2015 and I know how built in sat navs are in cars slow and tearing.. No cops showing no cameras, no crashes, etc
And believe me you and on only knows about waze but trust me many doesn't.. But stays quiet and quietly downloaded it and tried..
If you saying ppl knows it (don't know how you can know exactly that all ppl here wich visit this thread all know but ok fine) if they know they can see all info on the roads (pic below) they will never use stock again..

I know of Waze and used it on my phone when I had my Polo before I bougut an A3 (now S3). Don't want phone mounted somewhere and on charge, so use the Audi nav. Does the job. My PFL has the tech pack so has the online traffic updates works better than previous A3 without it.

Yes I agree Waze is better, albeit I don't like the design changes they have done to the app over the years. But just cba to have a phone stuck up somewhere.

I followed the video instructions down to a T but had one small issue. I got the file created, loaded the file, can see the various bitmaps on the map but no audible alerts come up. When I go into the notifications in the navigation settings, i do not see the myaudi POI's that i have to click to enable things like Gatso, Traffic lights etc. I see the default POI's like supermarkets etc.

Anyone else had this or gotten around it? I have the latest MMI in a S3 and could apply the update from POIBASE no issues. Just the event notification will nto show the new POI list

2018 November with the digital dash so it is FL.

weird. as far as i know, you should have it. Have you signed in to Audi Connect on your MMI, got the app and set everything up online? which system did you use for POIs? POI Base or the other system?

No i have not done anything with Audi Connect. I used POI Base for creating the USB and it loaded the bitmaps and locations just the alert option does not show up. I'll try to look at setting that up tonight. Other than that (if that does not work) i will try to wipe everything and try again.

Thanks for all the help :)

Maybe it hasn't loaded correctly. In your original post, you mention that you "created" and "loaded" a file. All you should have to do is copy and paste it from your downloads on your PC or Mac to a USB and then put that in the cars USB slot. Then in settings go to "updates". On the Map settings, do you see the options for your " my audi destinations"? If you see the POIbase alerts on the map but you dont have notifications then im really not sure what has happened! Do you have alerts for the other standard parts?

I followed the video instructions that results in POI base creating the upload file on a usb. This is what i did rather than copy paste to a usb. I do see notifications for everything else just not my audi destinations. Ill give a crack tonight at the copy past as well as connect. Will udpate once i try it. thanks...

Ok, but do you see the POI base bits you imported to the car, on the cars map now? when you downlaod the file from POIbase, you get 1 folder, in that folder you have a file & a folder. these 2 should be copied and pasted to a USB, not the 1st folder. The USB should be empty to start with too.

So given that the only issues people seem to have with my app have been due to errors in being unable to download from the PocketGPS site, I'm minded to update the app to build an SD card / USB from a manually downloaded Zip file. I'll take a look over the weekend and see how far I get.

Hi mcaddy, any luck?

Really appreciate the work you put into the app!

Cheers

Dave

Waze is fine for people that use text speak all the time, like cartoons icons, and are happy to mount a phone on their dash with an ugly cable hanging down.

I prefer an integrated system that works automatically and doesn't make the dash look a mess. I suspect the majority of Audi owners are the same.

Agreed.
And the mcaddy app is the best way as far as I'm concerned.

Updates all coded, seem to be working, a little more testing and a new version of the App will be up on my site.

After a few requests for the functionality, I've added a new app to my site, it allows supports the addition of the following categories of POI to a database.
  • National Trust
  • National Trust Scotland
  • English Heritage
  • Historic Scotland
  • Historic Houses
  • RSPB Reserves
Latest version - v0.9.0

To install unpack the contents of the zip file into a folder of your choice and run AudiPoiBuilder.exe

I've also added a feature to all three apps to allow them to be run from a script.

The '-auto' flag instructs the app to load and try and build the database using the settings last used when in interactive mode.

It is highly recommended that you use the '-target' parameter along with the drive letter as this will ensure that you are writing to the intended drive.

For example, If you create a new Powershell script and add each of the commands as follows you can run both the apps in sequence.

Code:
.\AudiPOIBuilder.exe -auto -Target d:\ | Out-String
.\SpeedCameraToPoi.exe -auto -Target d:\ | Out-String

The reference to 'Out-String' is a Powershell fudge to ensure that all three apps don't run at the same time.

If you want to use the above you'll need at least v0.9.3.0 of the Speed Camera App
