Hi guys my b8 a4 2.0 tdi 2010 I noticed had been getting an antifreeze smell after driving it so today I popped the bonnet and noticed its lost half a lite of coolant, had a poke around above and can’t see any noticeable leaks but not been underneath yet.
Is there any common areas to check for leaks on these motors?

Shouldn't be too hard to find if it's loosing a decent amount, I'd whip the covers off underneath and the engine cover off and top the coolant up, get it nice and hot and have a good look around with a torch.

I’ve got a feeling it could be the egr cooler with the burning antifreeze smell, I’m gonna check it out properly but seems to be a common issue!

Sorted it!
All it was was a simple pipe spring clip!
There’s a small coolant pipe towards the back right of the engine just below the inlet manifold was weeping under pressure, I could see the anti freeze stain and then a pool in the corner of the block looking down through the crevices
All I did was loosen the clip wiggle the hose about and refitted the clip and ran it all up and no leaking now, hate these stupid spring clips much prefer a jubilee clip myself and if it happens again I’ll put one of those on!

Yeah those springs clips are a right pain to work with unless you have a special tool.

It actually started weeping again so I pulled it off and fitted a jubilee clip, been fine for a few days now!

I feel that the trouble with a flexible pipe fitting onto a metal or plastic stub that has been leaking is, there might now be a film or build up of coolant residue left on either the stub or the inside of the pipe, so the real fix is to remove pipe from stub, clean both parts and refit - although fitting a Jubilee clip tightly will probably cover up that problem.
