Looking for a bit of advice on these chargers or thoughts.

My Audi A6 sits outside at the side of the house for a period of 3 - 4 months while I work Abroad.

Wife runs it every 2 weeks to keep the battery charged but this is not effective as it suffered a flat battery and had to be replaced under Warranty.

So was looking at fitting this Waterproof Maintenance Charger to the engine bay remote battery terminals and plug it into a outside 13 Amp socket.

Ring have this Charger (hopefully made in Leeds UK not China ) and thought this would suitable due to the stop start recommendation ie battery size to keep it topped up.
Not a Charger as Amps are small but will I think keep battery topped up.

Details from website are:
1A smart maintenance charger, ideal for connecting to infrequently used vehicles including classic cars, second cars, motorcycles, lawn mowers and more. Suitable for 6V and 12V vehicles and recommended for START/STOP batteries. Compatible with lead acid, gel, calcium, EFB and AGM batteries. Smart charge maintenance cycle keeps batteries in good condition, without overcharging. The compact design makes it easy to store, and the simple interface makes it easy to use: simply connect and select 6V or 12V. Rated IP65, making it weatherproof for charging outdoors.

Can't think of any other options as garage is too small to put car in.

Any problems come to mind fitting this ie Electronics in car / ECU etc ?

Ctek are the best I use, I can honestly suggest these as ring not positive tbh, but my experience with them was limited to torch & a tyre inflator, both questionable.

Thanks for your reply - as a 'electronic chap' your thoughts makes sense. the Ctek model are the same ones Audi / BMW / Land Rover sell with their logo on so think the extra investment using a Ctek charger would make sense plus one of their models has maintenance charging cycle and all are P65 waterproof which was what I need as it will be under the bonnet outside.

Thanks for that - that was the option of model I was thinking of :)

The MS 3.8 Model is a bit low on Ah - the CT5 is easier to use as the wife will have to disconnect the charger every month when I am away - get the car exterior valeted ( washed ) every month when he comes to do her car and needs to be moved down the drive - so probably best option.

Next job is to run a exterior power socket to house wall :)

Fitting the CTEK has a few quirks which I had to overcome :

Plan One was to use the under Bonnet remote terminals to connect the alligator clips to, then using a CTEK extension cable, put Charger in the engine bay and power cable to the outside socket by the side of the house.

The alligator clip for the -ve fitted ok on the post inside the engine bay attached to rail for front wing and bonnet could close
The alligator for the +ve is under a flap and with the lid attached the clip was hardly fixed due to the spread of the handles fouling the plastic case protecting the + ve post. Taking the cover off the +ve post , the clip would fit but only on half the post so the bonnet could close.

All would be be ok if the car was in the garage and the clips would go on the top part of the post but the bonnet wouldn't close tho'

The CTEK came with comfort connections which have M10 Ring connections which then that attaches to the charger instead of the Alligator clips.

Plan 2 : So out with the spare wheel & tool kit foam to get to the battery in the boot.
The car is a A6 Avant so will differ on other models but :-

The battery post clamps have a long enough threads ( to secure electric cables to the battery posts ) for the CTEK ring connections to fit, then a couple of M10 spare nuts secured the charger leads to the battery without having to disconnect the battery.

The cable to the +VE and - VE of the battery was then cable tied to some cable loom which went through the cubby compartment on the nearside boot wall - so the spare wheel and boot floor cover could be refitted.

The charger is now hanging on a bracket in the cubby hole and the power cable ( 0.75mm flat twin 300 v cable / same as charger ) will come from the outside socket - over boot lid seal and a 3 pin female socket will allow Charger to be plugged in.The boot closes fine as the cable is flat and quite small so shouldn't leak.

So easy to disconnect the charger if required to move the car and reconnect it ( by wife ) without having to use the alligator clips and hides the charger when driving the car behind the removable panel cover but still attached to the battery with only needing the orange connector to be attached and Main Power.

The ring connectors came with a rubber end cap - so when the car is on the road the charger can be totally disconnected and the wires to the battery protected.

Anyway - just a few handy hints if you are thinking of fitting a charger / battery conditioner.

Oh amazingly Halford's were the cheapest on line as a Web Deal Only ( not in store stocked ) - gets delivered from a Component Company called Saxon. That was for Charger / extension cable / rubber protector when all added up.

I have a CTEK MXS 3.8 which i bought 6/7 years ago and still going strong and many family members have borrowed it and used it without issues

A quick Update - after reading the Owners Manual it says the Battery should only be charged from the points in the engine bay - so for now have disconnected the connections which only took 2 mins from boot and will do a bit of investigation. On line ( sometimes right / wrong ) a chap did connect the +ve to the battery in the boot but the -ve to the body work .

Might be back to Plan 1 find some alternative Alligator clips to fit the engine bay posts so bonnet can be closed :( but think the video below would be ok as a similar charger fitted to a F Pace did the same.

No rush as car is in daily use and charger not needed to be used yet :)
