Does anyone have any idea what this noise is? It's coming from right in the engine. It's like an intermittent rattling/sounds a bit like a 4 stroke go kart. I noticed it after driving up the mountain to where I live. The engine seemed smooth when driving. I noticed the noise at idle when coming into the car park.

Hum not good, investigate ASAP.

Possibilities are, belt idlers, belt tensioners, crank shaft pulley to name a few, there could be other internal ones, fix now to avoid much collateral damage!

That's your timing chains rattling by the sound of it m8

Big job? Would it make sense to change pcv and water pump at the same time? I am using quite a lot of oil. (I believe thermostat has been done)

Not having a clue, I would think so as the PCV has been revised, thermostat also springs to mind, surely the water pump has been changed for an alloy one by now, maybe during initial warranty, plus access to the water pump is okay, ie its not hidden in with the chains.

So the Audi garage's initial diagnosis is a timing chain issue, but they won't know for sure until they remove the engine. Rough estimate for the repair is CHF10,000!! (£7,900). I am thinking it is at least worth an ask on here if anyone knows of any recalls etc that are out for timing chain issues? I read there were some class action lawsuits in the US.

I only read about one class action lawsuit in the US and that is for the s-tronic gearbox failures.

The timing chain issue seems common. I haven't read the forum reports in detail so I may be wrong, but I thought that it might be possible to resolve something without removing the engine. If you haven't done so already, have a search on Audizine.

If the chains haven't stretched and you are just replacing the upper tensioners on either bank it can be done without removing the engine. I had all the chains and tensioners replaced which was done with the engine in place but the box removed. Audi uk didn't know anything about any tsb for timing issues when I got in touch.

Cheers. I imagine that would make things whole lot more affordable if the engine doesn't have to come out! Do you know how you find out if the chain has stretched?

This sounds similar. I can’t tell off the pictures of this was done with the engine in or out

So more developments on this. The garage that I bought the car from have had the car for about a week and have started and driven the car a few times including leaving it to stand for a few nights and apparently the noise is completely gone... Does anyone have any idea how that could happen?
