Engine oil recommendations

Morning. What decent engine oil are people putting in their S3’s?
 
The genuine VW oil is perfectly good and very cheap.
If you want something different, Millers Nano is highly recommended.
 
Cheers for that. As a quick put me on is this ok to use until I get some more?

Not if it doesn't meet the correct specs for VW Audi engines.
The 5w 40 doesn't tell the whole story. The info on the back should clarify.

Millers Nanodrive cfs 5-40 NT+ is expensive but highly recommended.
I am running it in an S3, a TT and a Mk 4 GTi.
Interestingly, the TT used to get through quite a lot of oil using the oil installed at Audi and nothing hardly since having the Millers instead.
 
I've been topping up with Shell Helix Ultra Professional AV-L 0w-40. Meets all the Audi/VW specs.
Trying to find out what oil Audi actually use, out of them, is like some sort of Black Magic. They just won't answer my question.
I really don't know why as I would like to be topping up with the same oil they actually use, alas, it's a secret apparently.

So, you cannot take your own oil in? They are refusing to use your oil, even when it exceeds the VW specs?

Most Dealerships will use a trade oil like Comma
I use comma 5/50 motorsport and its fine. I am not a fan of main brand oils, a lot of them are all the same and frankly you are paying for sponsorships and the name. Bearing in mind the frequency most of us change the oil you are probably throwing away the oil less than 50% through its life anyway.

AKS Tuning are based just north of Bedford. Totally top independent garage run by enthusiasts.

I can vouch for the Quantum 5w40, use it all the time. You can get it for ridiculously cheap as well at the right time. TPS (If they'll sell to you) sometimes sell it dirt cheap. I got 5 litres for £15 at one point.

I would imagine dealerships use the cheapest old tat they can get. why would they use anything else ?
 
so is 5w40 recommended for 1.4 tfsi I was told 5w30 that's what I used audi spec oil ?

Should it not be 5w-30 OR 0W-30?, Getting very confused by this!!!
 
I have just looked in my owners maual and it says petrol engines vw504 spec does not say 5w30 or 5w40 it does say as an alternative you may use 5w40 oil in a petrol so if your petrol use a vw 504 spec oil unless my owners manual is out of date it is a 2010 a3 1.4 turbo ?

Use 5W40, Quantum or Shell. And change it every year.

504 is usually 5w30 (although i think it can be bought in 0w30), 502 is 5w40.
504 is the better oil, 504 is used for long life servicing (2 years/20k), 502 for regular intervals (yearly/10k). what i do with my 1.4t is use 504 and change yearly (5-6k a year).

bought castrol edge for around £25 in the past, and recently bought a couple quantum longlife 5w30 5 litres for the next couple changes. was around £18 for 5l

So far we have had Milners at £60.00 a pop and quantum at £15.00 not to mention and 5/30 grade up to 10/50 ........which basically cover about all the oils available for the family car. :) Most of the difference in quality of oils reflects in its longevity but if you are changing every 5-6k miles you are not really taking advantage of the extra money you paid for higher quality oil which begs the question do you really need to spend £60 on Milners if you are going to throw it away at 5k miles or would any good synthetic have done the job ?
Most people on a 8p forum are running 8 -15 year old + cars on average these will have 80-150k on them. i would think 0/30 or 5/30 would go straight through them and smoke like a No6 so i would be looking for a thicker oil better able to accept wider gaps and tolerances of an older engine and maintain pressure in a worn pump but each to their own :)

Yep! Run a 5w-40 fully synthetic. Like Millers.. :grinning:

You want contentious then ask about oil on a motorcycle forum :) my ducati runs a 50wt mono grade.
in an audi i would go for a fully sympathetic nanny oil like Bingo 5 - 7.30

Hi! 5w30 or 5w40 is what I've always had in mine. As mentioned above, some cars that are slightly older and have a bit more experience (like mine which is 135k miles) should be running 5w40 as the thinner 5w30 does just go straight through it.

in my beetles air cooled we use straight 30 oil its like treacle so a 5w30 is thicker than 5w40 oil ?
 
so 5w30 5w40 neither are thicker than each other 10w30 is thicker and 10w40 is same the w stands for winter not weight
