Is it possible to connect 2 phones to the MMI? I've tried but it only seems to connect via bluetooth to one, apologies if this has been asked before

Yes I think you can. Needs a setting change with VCDS or OBDEleven. I've got OBDEleven and there is an App on there to change to 2 phones on my A7. My wife's Q2 has the same app too. Not tried either though.

In general bluetooth connectiosn are one at a time, you can pair multiple phones, usually 4 or 5, but it will connect to the first one it sees.

My S7 can pair to my phone and also use a SIM in the slot for data, but it's a 2013 model, maybe the newer MMI is better at multiple phones at a time, I dont know as I dont buy Audi anymore as the build quality is so poor.

If the OP is talking about an MIb2, then depending on which he/she has can handle or be configured to handle two Bluetooth devices at the same time, with independent phonebooks etc etc

Which is why I said in general and the disclaimer that I'm not aware of the newer cars and there is no mention of the type of car he has or year. So it could be anything from a 2003 A8 (first car with MMI 2G) to a 2019 new car

Indeed. Need more information from the OP

You will have what’s known as an MIB1 system, either Standard (low Rez screen and black buttons around the select wheel) or High (High Rez screen and chrome buttons around the selection wheel) both of which can only handle a single active Bluetooth connect at any time.

thanks i think they are black buttons around the select wheel, is it impossible to connect 2 phone at one time then

With your current system it’s impossible to have two active BT connections, and other than retrofitting an MIB2 High (anything from £900 onwards) I am not sure of any solution.
