Project B7 420-R: 2012 Seat Exeo ST Sport Tech As Base Car.

At long last...

I have completed payment on the car - no monthlys! So I’m picking it up on Saturday. This will be the first time I’m driving it. I can’t wait to get stuck into this project, starting with quattro AWD swap.

I’m gonna be super busy now.

So today, I ended up with yet another C5 RS6 (BCY) engine!

This was priced right, and very complete, with turbos, loom and ECU. It never hurts to have a spare, so one could always be rebuilt to a different spec.

This is becoming a habit, picking up BCY engines.

To cut down on time, I’m not going to drill, tap and machine the block to allow it to mate up to my 01E, I’m going to transfer the entire BCY internals into a 4.2 V8 40V block, from a 2002 S6.

I have a spare engine, so the obvious thing to do is to use it.

Finally, I picked up the car, seeing it for the first time. It’s actually Dakota Red Metallic, rather than the Emocion Red non-metallic I originally thought.

And after seeing the car in real life, I’ve decided to retain the facelift SEAT headlamps, and build a hybrid B7 RS4 bumper around them.

Now that's a very nice colour, i'd love a car in that paint work.:icon thumright:

Thats a great lookin car. Those Exeo's are actually a more sensible choice of car to buy than a B7 if your into gadgets and what not. A good spec ST Exeo comes with all the mod cons you could only get in some S4/RS b7 cars, even most of the lower spec cars came with folding mirrors.

I’m retaining the SEAT tailgate. I’ll be inserting the SEAT license plate tub into the B7 RS4 bumper.

Front end will incorporate the SEAT headlamps and grille, with the B7 RS4 lower bumper blended into the SEAT upper section, which needs to be retained due to the SEAT BiXenon headlamps.

I’m not going with the B8.5 headlamps and grille now, I’ll be selling the headlamps I sourced.

 Good luck, couldn't stomach cutting up an RS4 bumper personally plus can't see how the RS4 arches will work now either unless you plan to cut those too.

Edit: Unless the lights line up, doesn't look like they do but I guess you have both wings to determine this.

The Audi and SEAT front wings are the same. The SEAT wings carry different part numbers due to the shape / profile of the side repeaters.

B7 RS4 wings are a direct replacement around the SEAT headlamps. Also the SEAT lock / radiator support carries an 8E0 prefixed part number, making it exactly an A4 B7 part.

SEAT Exeo-specific parts carry a 3R-prefixed part number, with 3R5 for Sedan-specific parts, and 3R9 for ST.

Who’s tuning the 2 b7 TFSI ECUs for this?

Just for my own understanding is this a project just because you can?
I keep thinking it seems easier to take a B7 RS4 and swap the N/A 4.2 for the Twin turbo RS6 4.2 motor and fit any interior dash you desire

The B7 RS4 is older, and more expensive. This car is a 2013.

I also like the SEAT Exeo’s front and rear end. I want to end up with a car I can’t buy. Not worth chopping up a B7 RS4 Avant to make it more like a SEAT Exeo ST.

In the course of looking over my parts the past weekend, I discovered a rather subtle difference between the B7 Audi A4 and the B7 SEAT Exeo fenders.

At first glance, the only difference appeared to be the side repeater recesses. Looking closer, it goes further.

On the SEAT fender corner, by the windshield base, in line with current Audi models is an area that allows the hood to have a slight overlap. The Audi fender lacks this. Looking at the pictures above, of the Exeo and RS4, the fender corners are different.

The pictures of both B7 RS4 and Exeo hoods shows the differences too, where the hoods meet the fenders.

After a bit of thought, I have decided to stay with Red. I’m going with the current Mazda 6 / Renault Clio. Still red metallic, but deeper, and a slightly coarser flake.

The Mazda Red is called “Soul Red Crystal”.

As suggested and incorrectly corrected :playful:

Will be interesting to see which parts you go with and/or hack up.

Seems like it's mostly just the labour to go now.

If it has to be red surely a more suitable colour would be the modern day R8 (and probably other Audi's) Tango Red than a French colour.

Since when did car manufacturers start actually making paint? I’ve never heard of a “French” color.

Manufacturer of French origin that uses the paint...

New Clio's have two different red metallic colours anyway but most people spray up not down for a reason, your car though we're just waiting for progress.

I’m going with the aforementioned paint - Mazda Soul Red Crystal.

Car manufacturers don’t make paint. You’ll be surprised how many “Audi” paints are used by other vehicle brands. Different manufacturers will give their chosen colors a name and code unique to their brand.

What does not change however, is the HEX code. You could order paint for your Audi by its HEX code, and it cross references to up to 30 other brands, that have no affiliation with Audi. I mix paint by HEX code, as many others do.

I’ll be securing B7 420-R - my way.

As part of my build, I’m installing a C5 RS6 motor. In the course of getting it running, I’m having the C5 RS6 IMMO turned off, and installing a B7 RS4 instrument cluster. So, anti-theft is reduced. I have looked into options to introduce new layers of security for my car.

As well as being a Mechanical Engineer, I’m also a certified Electronics and Telecom Engineer.

I have purchased a set of D3 A8 door handles, from a model with Advanced Key. These models have a smart key with Proximity Sensor. You approach the car with the key on your person, the Certification ECU senses the key, you touch the sensor on the driver’s door handle, an unlock signal is sent to the CCM, and to the engine ECU. The doors are unlocked, and the engine can then be started via push button / fingerprint. Voila!

Now of course, I’m not looking to install the D3’s Smart Entry and Start into my B7. It can be done, but it’s a very long process, that involves install other systems, that the Smart Entry and Start system depends on. Not viable.

I will be using the D3 handles, but with my own home-built Smart Entry system. And I will be using my Debit / Credit cards and a card reader to enable starting the engine. This will be via my 4-digit PIN or Contactless, using 3 different cards, just in case one fails.

I will of course have a manual override, using a series of buttons, pressed in a given sequence, in a pre-set time in the unlikely event all 3 debit cards fail.

I’ll keep you guys posted, but don’t expect too much detail, for obvious reasons.

Massively cool.

So my project has been a bit neglected, as I’ve been working abroad, only coming home every other weekend.

At last, my foreign contract is over, just 2 weeks left. The first thing I’m going to do is hire a panel van, and make the trip to go pick up my C5 RS6 motor. Fitting this into a B7 is uncharted territory, just like it was when I first installed an 077 V8 into a B5 all those years ago (2008).

Back then, I purchased a cheap B5 1.8 N/A auto as an R&D car. I am going to do the same this time too, buying a cheap B6 to install the BCY motor, ironing out all the bugs I’m sure to encounter. Once I’m happy, I’ll transfer the lot to my B7.

So, I’m on the look out for a rough B6/7. Let the work commence!

That's a great approach rather than trial and error on the real car. Look forward to seeing this progress!

So I’m on the lookout for a dirt cheap B6 A4.

I’m not really bothered about condition or spec. It can be any engine, auto or manual, FWD or Quattro. All it needs to have is some MOT, even if just 2 months remaining.

It’s just so I can tax and drive it from wherever it is to my garage. It’s a test bed, and it’ll be disposed of after it’s served it’s purpose, so it needs to be dirt cheap. Spares or repair is fine, as long as it’s got an MOT and can be driven.

If anyone on here has such a car, I’m interested.

Thanks guys!

Facebook market place? I saw a dirt cheap b7 which I half thought about as a donor car for a few parts. There seems to be a few on there now and again few hundred quid!

I’ve had quite a few queries over confusion as to what car is the actual base car for Project B7 420-R. I’ll clarify things with this post.

The Akoya Silver B6 was a 3.0 Quattro 6MT donor, as the Denim Blue B6 3.0 Avant Quattro was tip with a busted engine. I used the Akoya as an interim donor to get the Denim running, and manual swapped.

I intended to fit a SEAT Exeo dash into the B6. But I kept looking at SEAT Exeo’s, and liking what I saw. I also gave my Denim car a thorough underbody inspection, and saw a fair bit of corrosion. That decided it.

My project was going to live on in a newer shell. I wanted the newest car I could get, and it had to be a Sport Tech. This is where the 2013 SEAT Exeo ST Sport Tech came in.

So the Seat will become a 4.2 v8 Quattro?

Seeing this though.... I'm thinking the tailgate will fit straight onto my b7

:runs off to look for a black seat tailgate:
