Hi all, is it 10k miles what people recommend to service the Haldex? I believe Audi recommend 20k but I've seen people report of it becoming blocked earlier and failing. I am at 9200 miles currently so If it is recommended I'll look at getting it done at 10k miles.

Next question would be Audi directly or where is the best place to search for an independent approved garage?

Cheers

I believe it is based on age rather than mileage, mine as just been completed as the car is now just under 3 years old.

Oh right, I thought it was 20k miles recommended but most people go for 10k due to the issues reported of it getting blocked and the pump failing.

Yes 10k/yearly I think people say to get them serviced at now, this includes cleaning the filter and fresh oil.

Audi do not clean the filter so you will need to go to an independent garage, approx £100 depending where you go.

Would be interested to see how badly your haldex filter looks.

Is 10k/yearly not ridiculously short?
Purely based on what I have read on this forum the Haldex service interval is 3 years.
The S tronic gearbox oil needs changed at 38k though.

My first Haldex service was carried out last week, car is almost 3 years old and has covered 39k. This service is not required by Audi any earlier.

Not based on the amount the haldex pump is running and the amount that are failing due to it getting blocked, preventative maintenance. Everyone is different but I’ll be keeping my in line with engine oil change. Gearbox probably every 30-35k. It’s not mega expensive if you get it done at an Independent specialist.

Interesting, some independents recommend 10k miles (but they would to get you in). I guess if it was blocked and the pump failed it'd be covered under warranty anyway.

Did you get the filter cleaned? This was my filter on 37k after the oil was changed the before at Audi (no filter clean).

I’ll be getting mine done at 10k miles, then see how bad it is clogged up and go from there.

You say 10k miles....but to me this will be around 2 and a half years old.....so if I still have the car I will get it done at 3 years.

I got whatever Audi cover in the Haldex service, if it breaks because of this its under warranty and it will be fixed by Audi as its been serviced to their schedule and standards.

You will only cover 10k miles in 3 years?

Had mine done today (2015 rs3) and invoice says oil and filter have been replaced. £110 it cost. Should have been done June 2018 apparently! I didn’t buy the car until October 2018!!

I take it that was at an independent garage and not at Audi. £110 seems reasonable. There isn't really a set mileage or time frame to get it done, just down to the owner really but advised at 10k/yearly because so many get blocked up.

No, was at Blackburn Audi. I thought it was a decent price too.

In that case I'd be worried. Many people have spoken to Audi dealers and they don't offer filter clean or replacement as its not a serviceable item in their eyes. My car had the haldex serviced before I purchased it and can confirm they only changed the oil. Unless you've got pictures of them taking out the pump and cleaning the filter then I would suggest taking it to an independent to get it cleaned. Or run the risk of it failing in a few thousand miles. If you have warranty this would be covered though.

Regarding the recommendation to do this yearly, I'm assuming owners of brand new cars will not be doing it because it is quite an additional expense if you are on fixed annual servicing.
Maybe it's what is recommended for cars over 3 years old and out of warranty?

It's completely up to you, I bought my car when it was 3.5 years old with 44k miles on the clock and Haldex had never been serviced. The Haldex pump was dying, got juddering when slamming my foot on accelerator from standstill and it was slipping sometimes (e.g. at speeds up a steep hill) and Haldex was showing as faulty on computer. Had the oil changed and filter cleaned (by indy) very shortly after purchasing the car (it was sold privately so no comeback to any dealer, from my colleague so I knew it had been looked after, though she was not aware what the Haldex even was and was relying on the car to tell her when it needs servicing), computer fault reset and (touch wood) it's fine now. Although I have the Audi extended warranty, I'm probably going to have the Haldex serviced every year/18 months to keep it ticking along, I do average miles (10,000 pa).

I am 15 months and 11.5k miles into ownership. Based on the amount of blocked/very dirty filters I have seen on cars with as low as 10k miles on them, I am planning to have the haldex oil changed and filter cleaned after 18 months at an independent. Also seems to be suggested that its a case of use it or lose it with the haldex, with cars driven more gently accumulating more filter build up - but not sure if there is any truth to that.

My car is just about 30K and three years old in a couple of months.
I mentioned the Haldex oil change, which is due soon, when I was in the dealers a month ago.

I was just about to mention the filter but then he said that they now clean the filter as part of the service as they have seen a few blocked.

Someone on another thread about this suggested to get the filter replaced on its first service and ask for the old one back. Then every time you get it serviced they can swap them, you could ask for the used one to be left uncleaned so this way you can see how clogged it gets and this ensures you have a clean filter in every service. Not sure on the cost of a new one but sounded like a canny idea to me.

I just asked them to do the oil because I’d been having problems with the traction control light coming on. They told me the filter was done, I didn’t ask for it.

The filter can't be done... Jesus Audi, it's just a matter of cleaning it with a piece of paper.

Before and after (17k miles)

This is after 56K. Just been serviced by a dealer but no mention of the haldex system. Took it to an independent. Really should be part of an agreed service plan.
Haldex filter

about 55 miles from me !
Having said that Frank Follett have been around for a long time - remember them when I had air cooled VWs back in the mid 1970s !!

Oh wow, long time! Yeah the guy there, Geoff, seemed very knowledgeable and when I had my previous Q5 serviced there he gave me a very detailed invoice.

This was mine after 32k miles :crying:

This was mine at 28K. Was written off due to blockage. TRD replaced it for £120. All good now.
