Hi all,

I'm looking to buy my second A3 8V going from a 62 plate 150PS TDI to a 16 plate 184/181PS TDI.

I saw one I liked today and inspected it but the engine sounded odd compared to my 150.
Almost as if it had some extra knocking.

I took a sound clip and wanted you opinions on whether it was normal or a big problem waiting to happen? It had only done 24k miles.

What do you think?

Sounds a bit like my 2.0 TDI 150PS, I think some diesel engines are just more rattly than others, not sure as to why. I'm yet to have a problem with my engine and it's on 90k, when I first got it at around 70k sounded exactly the same and it was serviced that day, took it to an ex Audi service tech and he said it was all fine. However, you will probably be able to get some better opinions on here.

Sound like a normal clattery diesel to me...that’s why I chose a petrol engine lol!!

I can hear 2 sounds IMO. One is the constant tone of the diesel engine and the other is like a pulsing rattling/dry sound that doesn't sound right to me ?

Sounds the same as my Q2 2.0tdi. take it for a run and it should sound better warmed up. Was that running cold?

That is exactly what I'm hearing and it doesn't sound right to me. The engine was cold though but that pulsing sound doesn';t happen in my 150ps car even when its cold.

Here is a comparison to my engine running cold.

Thanks for all your replies guys. Those of you that have said your engine makes the same sound are you talking about the usual Diesel engine sound and the pulsing sound?

EDIT: If anyone with the 2.0tdi 184ps engine could do a sound clip for comparison that would help loads.

This is what mine sounds like if that's any help, even though it's the 150PS.

Sounds like mine and I have a 184 bhp

That sounds perfectly normal mate, the 184 is not the quiet rest of engines.

You can also here a ‘scraping’ sound which again is totally normal. Initially on mines I thought it was the timing belt or a faulty tensioner, but having listened to a few realised they all make that noise. Other people on here are experiencing the same.

Bad design from VAG as the 150 is much quieter like you say.

Sounds very similar to my 150ps Kayobong.

Yours has the pulsing grinding sound too stote?

I see, I thought the 150ps and 184ps were virtually identical other then injectors and slightly bigger turbo as well as ecu tweak.

It's odd how those can create the pulsing/grinding sound from the video. I thought it might have something to do with it being an S-Tronic and mine being a manual however I didn't think that would make a difference either. Strange indeed.

Sounds like my 1.6 tdi that is to be checked at dealership for clutch bearing goes bad.Check if the sound goes off if you press the clutch. If so you have the same problem. Also with similar sound they changed my a3"belt"at the dealership some months ago.

Mine is a manual, I wouldn't imagine the type of gearbox would cause an issue but could be a possibility I suppose. My car is actually at the mechanic at the moment as it developed a weird buzzing noise around 1000 RPM so I'll see if there were any underlying issues.

Heloo the 184ps is an S-Tronic so shouldn't have the clutch issues.

Ah hopefully nothing too bad Kayabong.

Main reason I'm worried about the car and the noise is that its from an independent dealer and the car comes with no warrantee.

You can always buy a 3rd party warranty, or even go to Audi if the mileage isn't too high as their prices aren't too bad. But that all depends how worried about it you are.

If you want a quote from Audi go to https://www.insurewithaudi.co.uk/extended-warranty

as someone else said, see if the noise disappears when you've got your foot on the clutch. I heard and odd noise coming from my 150 and the noise led to me having to get my flywheel and clutch replaced. costs me around 1k!

def see if noise goes your foots on the clutch. if the noise disappears this may mean the flywheel is shot.

I paid for extended warranty with my 150ps for 3 years and it cost quite a lot. Now I'm doing over 15k miles a year the same warranty will cost £600 a year which is a bit too much. I might consider it for the first year to make sure everything is OK though.

scoss the 184ps engine sound is from an automatic S-Tronic so there is no clutch.
