Haven't been around for a while due to a never ending list of stuff to do in the new house and busy in work, so recently realised I never did do a proper write up on my thoughts of the S3 compared to my F80 M3 CP now that i'd done over 1k miles in 2 months.

Firstly my S3 ownership hasn't been without it's issues, nothing major after my dealer experience, but a few minor things that have annoyed me. I have to stress these may appear overly critical but i am trying to be as honest as possible. Some of them may even be my settings/setup so please tell me how to fix them!

1) Windscreen wipers - i find them rubbish! they make noise unless it's pouring down and generally do a poor job with over spray when going down into position.
2) Sun visor - moving back up into away position always knocks it out and you have to clip it back on. Design flaw perhaps but both do it and although initially a quirk i am finding it more annoying as weather improves
3) Sat Nav - live traffic info has proven to be rather poor - compared to the BMW system i find it slow to react to alternative routes (twice told me to leave on junction i just passed) and in general the sat nav is not as good, ETA changing massively with no reasoning for example
4) MMI - no option to display music details that are playing on radio (i.e. showing what song is playing)
5) 1st gear - I haven't tried launch control but 1st gear just seems a little gutless to me, especially compared to 2nd. Maybe it's me...
6) Having to manually put car into Sport mode - i find it odd that you have to put it into dynamic and then push down into Sport mode. All other modes i find throttle not responsive enough.
7) Turbo lag - when on the motorway and stuck behind slow moving traffic and you floor it when they move back in, the lag i find rather annoying. Maybe I am comparing it too much to the M3 but i do get frustrated with the performance say from 40-70. I do wonder though as it's power delivery is so smooth that the pace is there but it doesn't 'feel' fast? or sound as fast as per 8.....
8) Exhaust noise - I think i will have to do something about this, at first i enjoyed the quiet pacey go-kart of a car i had, but i think it needs that extra db's now.
9) Seat positioning - on long journeys i find it a bit of a struggle to stay comfortable, will continue to play with the seat positions but i find the seats are not as grippy as the M3's or other sports cars i have owned.

It's a long list and a lot of the above were not an issue in the M3, so maybe that's my main issue that it isnt the M3. To counter it though there are a lot of positives:

1) Digital cockpit - I'm a bit of a techy so i love it
2) 2nd gear - probably a reason why i am not a fan of 1st gear but the pull in 2nd gear is very good and always makes me smile
3) Colour - was worried about the Nano Grey but it's the gift that keeps on giving. Dark in most pics i saw before but in the sun and right light it changes colour, still surprises me when i come back to the car and the colour has 'changed'
4) Handling - one huge advantage over the M3 is the ability to chuck it into corners and it just sticks and grips and goes. Not matter what the weather and it just seems to handle it with ease
5) Looks - especially the rear end. I used to always come back to my M3 and smile and it's same with the S3. The rear angle is special and the rest isn't bad either.

The above are my thoughts based on my experience, most wont apply to others and so irrelevant. However there are some niggles, when it is in Audi next i may mention the wipers and the sun visor issues as they may be able to resolve, but the rest are quirks i will simply have to live with.

So in summary the S3 is a special car and enjoyable, it just isn't as special and enjoyable as the F80 M3 CP i had. I know saying this on an Audi forum will get me flamed but it's just my opinion :) i hope to bond with it more over the next few months and miles and will definitely report back progress.

I think majority will appreciate the M3 is a bit more special than an S3.

I'm totally with you on the sun visor.
It wouldn't happen if the hand gap was on the other side.

Great summary a few points to counter your "issues" from my experience.

Audi sat nav was complete garbage imo. Routes it tried to send me were definitely not the fastest or best. I stuck with Google maps through android auto and can't fault it.

First gear is a bit iffy. If you're in automatic then 1st gear is non existent.

If you set up drive select for individual and have engine set as dynamic. When selecting this in future it will be in "S" mode straight away

Turbo lag was definitely a thing I found. I think those on here with stage 1 say it makes it a lot better.

Res delete would be a good way to get some sound back!

Standard sports seats I found ok, but took a while to get a comfortable position (which I'm still trying to sort in the S5). Not fantastic!

Think it's hard to compare the 2 and hard to argue how special an M3 is especially with that engine :)

Glad you're enjoying the car!

Big BMW fan...driven all of their performance cars and l mean all of them to date, love the M3,M4 and to be honest they are weekend cars unless you've money to burn...never a daily driver if your a family man or a person that respects the value of the GBP but you know that already, the dsg gearbox isnt laggy, its the software that is the problem,it can be remapped, also you bought the wltp S3 ....bad timing you also knew this, the rest you'll need to live with but the engine will loosen up around 7/8k miles...and you'll enjoy it more, the S3 handles better with 19's.....235/35/19, so maybe look into this option,l have owned both cars with different sized wheels and it's a night and day difference

I've tried several things to stop my wiper noise / judder. RainX made it worse. The only thing that I found worked was Audi window polish. Someone on here replaced the wipers with PIAA (?) blades and that solved his problem.

You can get track info, but it's a faff. Push the mmi dial to the right and it's within a submenu IIRC. Like I say, it's a faff.

I am totally with you on 1, 2, and 8

The wipers really **** me off as does the sun visor thought it
was just me at first being critical but seems i'am not on my own .

Like you i was ok with the exhaust note at first but then a 67 plate s3 when flying by
me one day and speaking to the owner at the traffic lights he said his exhaust
was standard it made me realized just how muted my car was .

My neighbour has a Grey M3 cp must say they i always have a good look at it
when he drives down the street . What made you change from the M3 to the S3
if you don't mind me asking .

Is it the wheels or Magride that makes it handle better? Or both?
In other cars I’ve owned I find bigger wider tyres makes it worse but none of those had magride.

Yeah, I’m 6 weeks into a ‘66 plate S3 (saloon) after a WRX and agree bout the wipers, visor and seats. The (leather SS seats in my case) have no hold going round corners so you’re always gripping the steering wheel!!

It might be that I’m going slightly faster though cos it’s a lot quieter!

On plus points;
1. As @jassyo06 says - economy. Just cos you’ve saved for ages for the car doesn’t mean you can burn money on fuel lol!
2. Quiet and refined - a delight on long journeys
3. Ride quality on the 19s is excellent
4. All the toys. The WRX had a cassette player - need I say more!
4. S Tronic especially using paddles to get ready to overtake etc- awesome!

So it’s growing on me a lot, especially carrying on with 4wd living out in the sticks which ruled out a BMW (x drive all diesels or too much dosh).

Ha, I’ve noticed the sun visor one as well, I thought I had a slightly loose catch or something. I’ve got in the habit of pulling it down with left hand and pushing it back with right hand, doesn’t seem to pop out then.

If Drive Select isn't already in Dynamic then when you scroll through and select Dynamic it will change the gearbox to Sport mode at the same time

1st gear especially, but also 2nd gear are down on power since they run reduced boost. 3rd gear is where it starts to happen (and feels almost as quick as 2nd to me). Audi had to do something to the S3 to that make the RS3 an attractive upgrade. On the flip side, this detuning means the S3 is very tune-able

May be doing something wrong but despite drive select being in individual and Dynamic for all it still remains in D and i have to pull down to get it into Sport :wtf:

Also can add a pet hate i forgot, the volume automatically reducing when in reverse? can you change that setting?!

Yes I *think* in the sound section of settings there's an option along the lines of "volume fader" which controls how quiet sound gets when in reverse.

Although note it'd be harder to hear the beep of the sensors of course

Shouldn't stay in D, selecting dynamic in both the S3 and 5 put it straight in to sport. Maybe a video of what you're doing would help, although highly doubt it's anything you're doing!

You do have to pull down to put into Sport in the individual setting - It defaults back to D for safety reasons when the ignition is switched off probably in case it wasn't you getting in it - If you have the car in Comfort (why would you lol) and then you press the drive select button to dynamic it will change to S then but that would be pointless in your situation as you are like me leave it in individual and select S when required - You can't have it start is S mode as far as I'm aware

Volume setting can be changed within the MMI somewhere - Under Car I think and then a submenu for parking aids - You'll need to play about with it - It's so you can here the reversing sensors obviously but I know some people don't like it -

When the car starts up if you select individual it will be in sport by default. (assuming your settings have it as such). Even if you select dynamic it will be in Sport mode as well.

Some might argue that it makes a lot of sense to kill the noise when you're reversing anyway so that you can hear what's going on outside.

If you've got music blasting away you might not hear a mum shouting to a child that you haven't seen...

It's not quite the same scenario, but just down the road from us is a blind junction. Like properly blind. It's one of the few which has had a proper traffic mirror installed on it, it's so blind. It's as blind as a bat wearing welding goggles. You just cannot see.

I walk past that junction every day, and it never ceases to amaze me how many people come up to it with their windows tight shut and Heart FM on at volume 11. Because they can't hear anything coming - which they could if they opened the window and turned the music off for a few seconds - they stick their noses out into the junction.

What happens next is the screech of tortured rubber from a car approaching from the blind side followed by the unpleasant and expensive-sounding crump of metal and plastic.

I have just checked. The gearbox will always select D from the P position after ignition start, no matter what mode you have set.
It doesn't actually bother me though, as I switch between D and S many times during even the shortest journey.
D is too sluggish at junctions, but S holds the revs too long once underway (unless you are actually going for it)
I switch between them as I need to.
Gives my left hand something to do...

Yes but that's after you've started the car and you then select individual (as you say settings as appropriate) or dynamic but he wanted it to start in S i.e you left in S but that doesn't happen the moment you put in P and turn off when you restart it will always be in D whatever drive select setting you're in until you cycle through them then it will change to S when it hits dynamic or individual

Yes point 4 the MMI text is well annoying. Ok it’s just a right press of the button and down to text, but it resets itself every time you turn the car off, hugely annoying, most other cars seem to have radio text on as standard. But anyway, first world problems :tearsofjoy:

Hmm - well if I left my car in Dynamic or indeed Individual (with it in Sport) it always starts up again in Sport.

Totally agree that S holds the revs pointlessly once you taken off and settled down into cruising mode so I also flick between S and D although M is even better when preparing to overtake from say 40mph......

Also agree here in S Mode holding the revs high. One thing however, if you are going in to 'cruising mode', putting it in to cruise control will drop them right down until you come out of it.

Cheers,
