New S4 Avant B9

Yo!

It’s a 09 reg B8 3.0 Tdi Quattro Avant Tiptronic.

I did a front and back facelift retrofit so it looks like a B9 (new bar LED headlights and brake lights, not fairy lights). This required new front wings and bonnet too. Great job.

I’ve also done a stage 1 remap which was brilliant. The DPF started constantly blocking so got a DPF removal and stage 2 remap. P Toque did the work and remap/rolling road.

It’s just over 300BHP and the torque is brilliant. It feels like the same linear power delivery but just much more of it and relentless. We could have got more power but it had already done 100,000 miles on stock turbo at that point.

The S4 does 55mph in 2nd gear and the diesel A4 is pretty much the same. The gear ratios are actually quite similar to the S4 between 1st and 4th. I believe the S4 has more and shorter low gears to accelerate quicker, which kinda makes it feel like a diesel anyway.

Off the line, the S4 will just pip the A4 to 70.

When both cars are rolling, there is absolutely no difference. If anything the diesel pulls away albeit with much less drama.

I have more fun in the s4 petrol don’t get me wrong, but that’s mainly due to the sound. The diesel definitely “feels” quicker but with less throttle response. The old B8 also feels like a boat compared to a B9 S4 with sports diff and 19 inch Michelin PS4s.

Very interesting informative write up there!

Yeah I can imagine the b8 weighs a bit more than the b9 platform.

I've got a tuning box on mine and I've had a few runs with an s5 where there was nothing in it on a roll. Haven't had a race with one off the line.

But if it makes a difference I've been neck and neck with an s3 off the line but had the better of it on a roll.

The s3 is very very quick off the line for what is.

Any pics of your a4?

And yes my brother and I have thoroughly compared both the S4 and A4 against each other lol

Haha I'm the same with my mates.

A friend has an e92 m3 and another has a Porsche cayman gts.

The cayman is rear wheel drive and 360bhp. It's silly quick.

Absolutely ripped both my car and the m3 on both a roll and drag.

I had the better of the e92 off the line and kept up with it on a roll.

Great car the e92 is. The sound is sensational.

I’ve had both a cayman S and E92 (but a 330d). Brilliant cars. The brakes on the BMW ripped your face off. I’ve never experienced brakes before or since which are as effective. Amazing! Had an E82 120d coupe stage 2 which was really fun and recently a 2016 Mini John Cooper Works which I sold as deposit for the S4. The Mini was like a wasp in a jar; one of the best handling cars I’ve ever been in.

I’ve signed up for test drive of the Porsche Taycan when it comes out. For now I’m done with petrol etc, that test drive in a P100D Tesla blew my mind. You’d have to be Jedi or superhuman to get used to that acceleration.

Never thought I’d say this but Tesla are gonna be responsible for acceleration limits on cars. They’re kinda loopy!! Forget what you think about power in a conventional car.

But of all the cars I’ve had. The B8 Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI Quattro has been the absolutely best all round. I’m gonna drive it until the engine dies and then bang another one in. Also get a proper remap not a tuning box, you’ll get much more gains and less likely to damage car. Take it somewhere like Performance Torque with a rolling road; I guarantee they’ll get you more power than a box and they’ll do a before and after graph for ya.

Wow uve had a good range of cars!

Yeah the minis seem like pocket rockets lol.

Tesla is definitely leading the way in acceleration but I guess most petrol heads don't want to sacrifice the emotive feel of a high revving engine sound.

Until most don't test drive u won't know whether u like it or not.

Same can be said with the upcoming s4 diesel. You have to drive it to either hate on it or love it.

Not do either before uv even experienced it.

I really like the taycan. As much as tesla are leading the way in electric performance I'd hold out for Audi or any other German manufacturer to make an equivalent.

The audi gt looks great too, very much like the taycan.

I've had my tuned b9 272 for 3 years and it still feels fresh.

The effortless torque makes you feel like your on a plane at high speeds.

It's an unbeatable mix of economy, comfort and performance imo

Got pics of the A4 yeah but it’s coming up file size too large will have to reduce tomorrow.

Yeah cars are cool but can’t be ***** spending so much on fuel, oil, tax, repairs etc electric is 100% the way to go IMO. Book in a test drive at Tesla you’ll **** yourself

Had a go in one of these. Half as fast as a Tesla. The interior is very nice as expected, pretty sure it’s from an A6.

Audi picked up my s4 today and got a Golf R courtesy car after some long telephone calls. Might be a bit of fun.

So driven the Golf R and it’s a bag of sh*te.

The gearbox is quick. Everything is else is awful, sounds like a van?? Lol

What a disappointment

I know Tesla’s are fast just have absolutely no desire to even drive one, personal choice and all that mate. For that money, there is so much choice

Ah no point talking about Tesla if you haven’t driven one.

It’s like when people used to slag Apple off but never used one. Just no point debating it really.

But if anyone else is interested:

A Model 3 Performance is faster, cheaper to run and most importantly SAFER than any car in its class. I don’t know what’s not to like to be honest. I thought teslas were sh*t just like you, until I test drove one.

All cars are gonna be electric soon anyway.

Starting to sound like an early adopter Apple fanboy here lol

I’m a petrol head but I’m so disappointed in the performance of the available “sports cars” these days. Very little between them and poor value for money. If anyone believes that throwing thousands of pounds at petrol every year gives a car some emotion then it’s a very sad world we live in. Just can’t compete with electric.

Every time I hear Ferrari or anyone boast about some super sophisticated 650 bhp “monster”, I just think blah blah blah. Two electric motors are quicker.

Yes my V6 sounds awesome. But who cares. Would rather have instant torque and listen to some pink floyd.
So you would rather have a Tesla than a Ferrari?

So you would rather have a Tesla than a Ferrari?

Absolutely.

One of them is slower and makes you look like a bell*nd.

One of them is faster and doesn’t try so hard.

I’d rather put the saved fuel money into property. You know, rather than top up a depreciating asset with liquid dinosaur bones. Maybe that’s why Tesla owners are so smug? You never know.

Different strokes for different folks!

So Ferrari depreciates more than Tesla? Right. You talk about all the fuel saving but forget to mention that to get yourself into one of these your monthlies over your S4 likely to double if not triple.

That's what people seem to forget. For the basic Model 3, with a £4k deposit you're looking at £800 a month! If we use the Model 3 Performance as a reference (since you'll be wanting something a bit faster than the S4) then that jumps to having a minimum £5,690 deposit and £1,175 a month for 48 months... That would leave people with £6-800 a month for fuel versus the S4, depending on their current monthly payments, so what's the point? Also, things like insurance are more expensive (about £200 a year on average for me). If I take that all into account I would be paying about £8k more EVERY YEAR before I even start charging it.

I'm not against electric cars at all, quite the opposite, but if they're significantly more expensive then why would I try to swap?

Also this is the first time I’ve EVER seen this sentiment on a car forum.

People asking “do you really need all that power?”

*** it’s a car forum. Of course I need all that power.

What has happened people? Lololol

I spoke to tesla last week about the prices etc.

The deal you are looking at is to own the Tesla. Currently there is only one deal where you actually buy the car over a period of months.

So you can’t really compare this to a lease where you give the car back.

Anyway, Tesla will be introducing PCP and lease where you can pay less and simply give the car back after 3 years. I have spoken to them and they’ve confirmed this. Lease Options are also going to cover the Model 3 Performance.

This is what I want. I don’t want to own any depreciating asset, I want to give it back especially with new technology.

The Model 3 Performance is £52K and my S4 was £51K. The lease amount will be very similar.

I hope this helps. The current Model 3 deals seem expensive because you are actually buying and keeping the car.

That's a fair point, however, we'll have to wait and see what the lease and PCP deals actually come out as because there's every possibility that they're still really expensive. Or it could be cheaper than an S4, but I don't see them offering them for £250 a month like they did with the S4's.

If the deal works out so its as cheap or cheaper than an equivalent petrol car then I'd have no issue buying one, performance is performance for me whether it's from petrol, diesel or electric. But even things like the VW e-Golf are stupidly expensive still (it was only £50 a month cheaper than my S4 with the same deposit/PCP terms and with no options added to it - mental).

I'd swap my s4 for a model 3 performance in an instant

I am going to pay the rest of my lease off and get one right away.

Can’t be ars*d even debating it. Audi have no idea what’s wrong with my S4. They’re saying gearbox overheated but it’s overheating on idle when parked up.

The pre sense keeps emergency braking my car.

I was at the gym last week, parked and locked my car. When I came outside it was unlocked and running. No idea how. Audi can’t figure it out. I don’t have keyless entry.

But yeah the panel gaps are really equal.

Sounds like your S4 has serious issues then!

I would be ****** if it was mine, thankfully I've never had any issues though so I'm more of the 'there's always going to be cars with issues' camp. Although I'm sure that would be different if it was mine. I think as soon as Audi come back saying 'we don't know what's wrong and can't fix it' then it's time to reject the car if you're able.

It’s under warranty so no bother.

Audi sent me a video showing how well looked after my car is. They showed me all the tyre depths, suspension, diff, exhaust pipes. They said everything is looking good.

I have no idea why they sent me this video.

They’ve also told me they can’t fix the car because they don’t know why it’s acting like this. They suggested just giving the car back to me.

I have refused of course. Until all issues are fixed I will simply reject the car and shop elsewhere. They asked if a mechanic could drive the car home and test it. I said no.

They then tried to scare me saying the fault happened at 90% throttle at 6000 RPM with 200Nm of torque.

I said ok this is normal loaded operation of a turbo charged V6 engine. What is the issue? Can you not rev a petrol car any more?

I have no idea what they are talking about and how this affects my coolant or gearbox temperature. My coolant is overheating and they are looking at gearbox faults?

Anyway it was fun while it lasted.

that is going to properly **** off anyone so don't blame you for wanting to change.

For me, I still like real engine/exhaust sound (call me old fashioned), I have just sold my 2018 2.0 TFSI Q5 for a X3 M40i...yes please! And got an absolutely cracking deal. Low deposit, and very manageable monthlies

Gave up on any thoughts of the upcoming diesel SQ5 (petrol one was too quiet anyway)

so you decided to ignore the Mrs then....

be interested in the deal on the X3, and trade in for yours. Not that I am thinking of selling mine at all, not a bit, no....

Yeah I totally understand the sound aspect. 6 cylinder cars sound beautiful. Even a good diesel has some character. And you may not realise this but Tesla motors have an awesome electric whine, I love it!!!

I am rejecting my S4 today and buying a Model 3 Performance.

Audi have not fixed it. They don’t know how to fix it. It hasn’t overheated in their workshop so they’re just gonna give it back to me.

They don’t know why the car unlocked and started itself and they don’t know what to do about it. So now I have to use a steering wheel lock?!!

Also they said my pre sense sensor is fine. So I have to put up with my boxer dogs being thrown into the rear seats because the car is emergency braking without warning. It braked so hard once it hurt my mums neck. Audi don’t care.

The S4 is a great capable car but I’m not having that. The Model 3 Performance is over 40% quicker anyway, I’m sold.

Won Mrs over when she went for test drive. P/X clears Q5, and got almost £10k off X3. Just didn’t want to get the SQ5 that will be diesel! Monthly’s work out about £25 more than Q5, and I only had poverty spec SLINE 2.0.

Asked my Audi dealer for quote based on last available SQ5, came back £120 p/m more than I am paying on X3

It's not fully self driving yet, besides that would be illegal anyway in the UK right now. You can upgrade it later rather than paying for it up front as it's just a software update.

Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk

Yes you can pay later but it costs 2 grand more. It’s awesome.

For anyone that’s interested, here is the Tesla price direct from them.

The price for a Tesla 3 Performance with the following:

Grey paint (extra £)
Full Self Drive (extra £)
Black Interior

Direct from Tesla. This is the only deal available for a personal contract, not business.

£64,000
60 months.
£6400 deposit.
£1075 a month.

Which equals. £64,500 plus £6400 deposit.

Grand total £70,900 over 5 years.

Car should be worth maybe 20-25k after 5 years? Full self-driving electric car should be worth at least something I’m guessing.

So if you sell up you’re looking at a grand total of £50,900 to £55,900 to own a Model 3 Performance for 5 years.

Either that or keep it until batteries blow up in a fiery electric inferno.
that is just RIDICULOUSLY expensive. For that money...Used RS6 Performance all day long

STILL SLOWER THAN A TESLA

HAHA

It’s not though is it... and that’s my main issue with a Tesla right now.

My wife’s diesel Mitsubishi SUV would easily beat your Model 3 on a 400 mile journey.

If I went to a meeting 250 miles away, unless my meeting is walking distance from a Supercharger (seriously doubtful) then I’m probably adding around 30-40mins to the total journey whilst I’m forced to “grab a slow coffee” at the services.

As of 2019 it's 16% on an electric car.
