Hi All,

Not been on here since 2005 I think when I owned my A3. Lots’s of cars since, some good and some not so!

Just purchased a new 2019 A1 Sportback, S-line, S-tronic, 35 in turbo blue with black roof. In stock car so no choice of extras etc.

Wondering if anyone else has had the following issue around the spare wheel, or lack of?

My car does not come with a spare wheel kit. I would like one! If the car had been ordered I could have spec’d it as it’s available according to the configurator and dealer. So they exist!

No worries me thinks, I’ll order one from the parts counter. Can’t do that Sir, not available for retro fit.

I’ll try Audi customer service. Same answer.

My point is, if I’d have spec’d a spare, then damaged it beyond repair (unlikely I know but bear with me!), surely I should be able to purchase another??!!

Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this rigmarole, managed to buy one, etc or anyone with one could get a part number off the wheel?

That’s quite a rant for a first post but there must be a solution!

Looking forward to any replies!!

Sounds like a normal dumb Audi dealership story, the only reasons that I can think of for a refusal is that it can't be retro fitted by them as it might/would take the car into a higher tax/emissions bracket without you needing to pay anymore road tax - or, it is the usual, ie "can't do it because that part was not fitted to the car at the factory". I'd be going back and just ordering up the required parts for taking away and "doing something with them" - that should sort that problem!

Edit:- maybe another similar tale - I bought a new Passat 4Motion in May 2000, during the first winter after buying that car, I experienced some nasty issues with the initial performance of the brakes, VW would not talk to me about it but would send me out a letter, it turned out that many VW Passat B5 and similar aged Audi A4 B5 were experiencing these problems - not accepted as being VW Group's fault, more the friction material industry's problem/fault due to changes in the make up of the friction material, as the friction material on a new car is only warranted for a few months or 1000s of miles, they suggested that I visited an Audi dealer and buy the new front pads which, at that point were only available to Audi within VW Group, ie improved material brake pads. So annoyed etc, off I trotted to the main Audi dealership parts department, explained my problem and all I got was "sorry but we can only sell parts to get used on Audis" - nowadays I keep quiet about what my intended use is for anything I buy and I also just hand over the part numbers, doing that makes life very simple and easy, no stress or steam coming out of my ears!

Yeah, you’re spot on with both reasons - ‘increase in tax bracket’ and ‘but it didn’t come with one’.

I’ll just rock up at the parts counter I guess but I’ll try and suss out the part numbers first - so if anyone has said car with said wheel, jack etc and could get some numbers off of them I’d be most grateful!!

Hi, I have a 2019 A1 S-line 35 but manual. I ordered it with the spare wheel kit, only cost £ 125. I have taken several photo's of it for you to have a look at. I can't see a number for the foam insert.
Looking at it, it looks like standard kit across the VAG group.

Hope it helps.
How do you find the 1.5 engine.

Hello mate! Thanks for that, you’re a star.

Obviously because my car was stock it does not have the spare & jack etc. The dealer told me you couldn’t buy these items to retro fit. I’ve since been onto Audi UK customer service and they confirmed this. My first post shows my argument against this.

Since then, through the parts finder on this site, Crewe Audi have stated they can gets the parts for £338. This is a massive 270% higher than ordering with the car.

I’m not prepared to be ripped off like this so will tackle the dealer and Audi UK again.

Another aspect of this is that when we purchased my wife’s A1 in late 2017 they did retro fit a spare wheel kit for the £125.

It pi$$es me off is that no one appears to either understand what they have/have not or can/cannot do.

In answer to your final question I don’t pick the car up until next Wednesday. However I test drove a 35 and i was surprisingly impressed. Haven’t had a petrol car since 1990 so jumping back from an oil burner will be somewhat different. Looking forward to it. (Even without a spare......)

Just looking at your pics more closely the spare is 18” so I assume you have spec’d the 18” alloys? I have the standard 17” wheels. I never thought to mention this in my original post!

I'll butt in and give an answer to that last question:- remember that it is a narrow space saver wheel that is shown in picture, so it will be the same size for all standard wheel options for an A1.

Edit:- so that means if you are attempting to fit a plain steel wheel of the size normally fitted to your car, then you would need to work out where to buy one - many online suppliers can provide steel wheels for most dia/width/ET/centre hole/bolt PCD - either way, you will be limited to 50MPH for any wheel you use other than same as what is fitted to the car, though with a same size or smaller diameter spare steel wheel you could leave it on for longer, ie not just as a "get you home" spare wheel.

Thanks for that.

With that info and Weegee’s pictures I thought I’d have a look at the good Ladies ‘17 plate A1. The spare is exactly the same part number even though it’s the earlier model car.

So that’s a good move nearer to getting a space saver, after purchasing the car, that the dealer and customer support said couldn’t be bought!!

Does not the spare, jack and gubbins from the previous model fit?
Apologies, seems like already answered...

The saga continues - but this time with the wife’s 2017 A1 1.4 125PS Sport.

Since I’ve had spare wheels on the brain I’m now convinced hers isn’t the correct one for her car or if it is then the jack kit tray is incorrect. The spare isn’t even secured in place. Why I didn’t notice this when we purchased the car eighteen months ago I’ll never know!

I’ll get some pic’s up soon and perhaps one of you kind people could share some enlightenment!!

Finally got my spare wheel sorted, well almost, one small modification to do.

So I looked on eBay for a spare wheel armed with the part numbers supplied by @weegee

I found one from a 2006 Audi TT complete with the insert, jack, brace, etc. I noticed that the insert looked a very similar shape to my A1’s spare wheel well. So £70 later the whole lot was on it’s way.

A minimal amount of trimming of the insert with a good sharp knife and it fits like a glove. I had to fabricate a hold down shaft and I still need to modify the jack as the locating cup is slightly different. All the other tools are similar to the TT ones so it was just a case of taking the old tools out and fitting the new ones into the insert. I also managed to cut a slot for a breaker bar and socket instead of the crappy standard wheel brace.

So, if like me, you’ve purchased a 2019 A1 Sportback from stock and it didn’t come with a spare wheel, this is a great cost effective option.

Once fitted it looks like a genuine installation and it doesn’t rattle one little bit. It’s virtually flush with the boot floor so the floor carpet sits nice and flat. I’m well happy with how it turned out.

Thanks to @weegee for the part numbers.

Hi,
Nice job well done. How are you getting on with the 1.5 engine?

I’m really liking it. I’ve not had a petrol car as a daily driver for over thirty years so the whole experience is very different! I’ve driven the wife’s 1.4 TFSI which I always thought was great but this latest 1.5 seems much more refined.

With the DSG in normal drive it seems a little ‘half-soaked’ and you have to prod the throttle to make it do much but that may be due to me being used to a diesel and the low down torque. But if I drive it in ‘S’ or manual mode it becomes much more lively. If I change to the Dynamic drive setting the whole thing comes alive and it’s f-in excellent!!

I’ve only done 500 miles so it’s a little early to be thrashing it just yet! The handling, braking and responsiveness of the A1 compared to my old car are just so much better.

I have high hopes for this car, I think I’m gonna enjoy it. So far I’ve had the rear windows tinted in limo black, changed the badges to gloss black and fitted some Audi rings to the rear doors like the Contrast Edition. That’s probably it for the exterior. I will fit an arm rest at some point and I’m exploring a paddle shift steering wheel from another model if it will fit/can be coded (my car was a stock item so didn’t get to choose these).

I’ll probably remap it once I’ve put a few miles on it!
