1.4ftsi COD noise saga continues....

Anyone with a 1.4tfsi COD 150 tell me if this is normal or not ? (You hear it with windows down around 20-25mph in COD mode)

im not aware of it but i've usually music on and windows shut. Will try to listen next time im out.

That would be great if you could, Audi cannot tell me if its normal or not. Its quite loud in built up areas with the windows down at low speeds (20mph ish) when in COD mode and the engine is slighty under load but not enough to take it out of COD mode.

Don't know if it helps but mine is a 1.5 cod and I can't hear any difference when in 2 cylinder mode. Can only tell when it is as it says it is on the dash (when on the fuel consumption screen)

to me it sounds like something loose underneath the engine. but ONLY does it at very low speeds and i have to have windows down. its ****** annoying hearing it as it sounds like my car is knackered. onlookers look at my car strangly.

How many threads on the same thing??

Mine has done the same since the start. No major issues as a result so far.

Seems to be mentioned across VAG forums with the same engines but can’t see any resulting in a fix.

Characteristic of the engine? Maybe chop it in for a none cod if that bothered?

Appologies on the threads. The reason is I have not been able to get a concrete answer whether or not this is normal and I have 2 months left of Manufactures Warranty left.

For every person who tells me that this is normal or a 'characterisitc' of the car, serveral members say no, obsolutely not, that the car is perfectly silent.

I have a friend who as a Seat 1.4 150 and when his goes into 2 cyclinder mode there is no noise.

Audi UK have said that they have no idea what it could be, nor are they aware of the noise, My local Audi engineers say they have never heard this noise before and sounds like a loose heatshield.

If it is a 'Characterisic' of the engine, why did Audi make an engine that goes from being so quiet to sounding like a tractor. Friends have heard it from outside the car and say it sounds like your car is knackered.

I have read of other examples of this noise across other manufature who use the same engine and again theres no fix other than one guy had his car swapped by the local dealer becuase they didnt know how to fix it and another having new injectors and a one guy getting a software update from Audi which apparantly fixed it.

(One thing to note is that above 30mph ish I barely hear it when still in COD mode. I think once the engine is no longer under load and in COD mode, I barely hear it. also when its warm and dry it is very loud. when its wet and cold. I bearly hear it, very strange.)

I have read that the injectors may need to be balanced but that might just be someones best guess.

I am still left baffled, again sorry for that amount of threads, just a new Audi owner trying to save a potentially huge repair bill. Thankyou for you time.

I hope you get it resolved but I would have thought that as you have reported the issue within the warranty period then if you have further issues Audi should honour it.
The trouble with starting fresh posts about the same issue is that we lose any historical information that you, or anyone else, has contributed to this and can make it difficult to follow.
No harm done though...

How about you scan the used car classifieds in your area, locate a similar year PFL A3 with the same COD engine and ask for a test drive? You can test a few and come to the conclusion if the noise is indeed normal or not. If none of the cars make the same noise, then you are in a stronger position to lodge a case with Audi.

This has already been done by my local Audi Dealer but unable to find a car with the same year / engine. All I can say is the noise is getting slighty louder. The car goes in soon so hoping the issue can be found and resolved so I can inform other people with the same issue who belive its a 'characatrisic' of the car. I hate hearing it, it grates my ears. I have never owned a car with such a horrible sounding engine. saying that when not in COD mode its whisper quiet.

This is disingenuous.

My conscience wouldn't let me pretend to be interested in buying someone else's car to try and find out what was wrong with mine.

Sell it and by something else as this clearly seems to be taking over your life.

That way, you can relax and not post a million threads on the same issue on here

Joking aside it must be grating on you now, it would be if it was me.

I cannot sell it, Its on PCP. only owned the car since december. I have come from old bangers with a 101 common faults and was hoping that by getting a newish nice car I wouldnt run into issues like this.

You can sell or trade it even though it’s on PCP (assuming it’s dealer PCP / Finance), negative equity might be a problem but garages will take it off you, especially main dealers as they’ll terminate the PCP (pay it off) if you buy another car from them.

Cars get issues whether they are brand new , 3 years old or 10 years old.

The think is other than this issue I love the car, I dont really want to sell nor do I want to loose money so soon. I worked hard to get this car.

just checked my 2015 1.4 COD there at low speed with window down. I couldnt hear anything when it went to 2 cylinders. Ive 19,540 miles on my car if that makes a difference

Thanks for that, is your a auto ? Im a 26k miles on a 2016. Strange how some people say its normal tho and yet some cars dont do it at all.

Just managed to play those YouTube videos.
It sounds like a timing chain rattling off the cover. Had a similar issue in a Honda a while ago where the chain had stretched slightly.
Not sure if these engines are chain or belt driven.

The more I hear it the more I am convinced its something like a heatshield thats loose. I belive that the engine shakes when in 2 cyclinder mode which would cause the noise if something was loose. Last night when I got in the car I revved the car abit before I set off and it sounded like I could hear something rattle abit. once warm it stopped? Im hoping it is something as simple as something loose.

Sounds like it.

Is it a metal on metal sound?

Could be engine mounts, or heat shields etc.

Years ago i had a POLO (1st car) and i used to get this annoying vibration noise when at a specific low RPM, turned out the air box was vibrating against the inner wing now I'm not saying this is your problem but what i am saying to you is it could be anything.

I'd start with getting the car on some ramps, get someone to sit in it with the engine on, in neutral and gently build up the revs and see if you can get them to recreate the noise, it's going to be trial and error but short of throwing money at it and replacing the 'suspect' bits i can't think of anything else you can do.

Been back to Audi, Who have replaced the clutch which fixes the clutch noise issue but the COD noise is still there, I have stuck my Go Pro under the hood to try and get a better listen.
