i have just ordered a new RS3 to replace my 18 plate S3. When I ordered it I was asked if I wanted to have the top speed restriction removed from the ECU for £1.6k, well I thought highway robbery was a thing of the past. Can I get it removed far cheaper, Is it simply a matter of modifying a line code or is it far more complicated and an Audi only modification.

If you get a stage 1 map at most places it will remove the limiter.
Revo map is around £700 and includes this.

... and not only does remapping remove the speed limiter, it also removes your drivetrain warranty :)

It does indeed, but if you're looking to do something 'Far Cheaper' then you have to be prepared for that. It's why Audi charge so much.
Personally I wouldn't bother with either, the RS3 is an absolute weapon straight out of the box! and you'll very very rarely 'miss' not being able to go past 155mph.

Do you not get something else for the £1600? Surely it’s not just a limiter removed for that money.
I know on the rs6 if you get the ceramic brakes you get 186mph top speed instead of the 168 or something like that.

Agree with the top speed unless you are looking at tracking the vehicle, but there are not many tracks where this car could reach that speed to be honest.

I actually think a stage one map is well worth loosing your warranty over to be honest. The RS is a great car out of the box but my god it really wakes up and becomes something else once mapped. MRC stage 1 is sooooooo worth the money :)

Zaka 7 good point. The only thing is I sometimes travel through Germany and like to do high speed runs on the unrestricted sections of the autobahn but you are right it’s not cost effective.

Exactly that!

I personally don't. But it is all about risk and opinion.
If you're comfortable accepting you could end up having to foot a £10-15k bill should any major parts go, then go for it.
But let's face it, the main reason most people buy newer cars is things like warranty and peace of mind over an RS3 that's a couple of years old and significantly cheaper. I don't see the reasoning to do that and then obliterate one of those selling points. But each to their own.
I just wish we had ABT like they do in Germany, they will take on the full warranty when they map the car!!!!
You can get it in the UK, but the map is about £3k and the warranty cover is limited to £7k

Good points from everyone, I am convinced that maybe although I wouldn’t mind going for it but at the end of the day, it’s quite quick enough out of the box. Thanks for the comments.

If Audi are happy to remove the limiter though then 99% of the time the engine will be fine. The risk is those 1% of engines that perhaps would go bang anyway and you're not covered because remap.

Agreed, but the remap does enhance other things, it's not just the limit increase, it's why the charge so much for the limiter only.
