My 2.0T (BUL engine) is being serviced this week (gets serviced evey 12 months, 7000 ish miles) and my mate will get all the parts from TPS (he's a mechanic by trade)

Now i have also been given 4 litres of Castrol Edge 5w-30 titanium FST long life fully synthetic oil by a relative

Now my question is will the Castrol edge Ive been given be ok to use for top ups?

Obviously the Oil my mate will get from TPS meets the required specs but not sure if it could be affected by topping up with the Castrol edge

I would only add longlife to longlife and prefer not to use it anyway.TPS Quantum good enough for me and top up with like for like

Don't use either to be honest , both get used at bonkers rate in these engines.
Fuchs titan pro 5w40 fully synthetic ester is far better and not bonkers expensive , my BUL is a low mileage engine and uses 5w30 like its olive oil, titan pro has dropped consumption a lot , far more user friendly frankly, there's using oil and using oil.
Would'nt go back to anything else now.

Rob is right, the only oil I'd consider using in any of my engines is Fuchs Titan Race Pro-S, or equivalent ester base stock derived oils. Another league in protection, and helps reduce oil consumption. 5w30 is too thin in my opinion, and promotes oil usage, I stick to 5w40.

Cheer guys

I will be using the 5w-30 from TPS, the car has done 122'000 miles and has been using 5w-30 oil for the last 3 years Ive owned it and normally gets through half a litre every 2000 miles so im happy with that

My mate is going to give me the oil's specs when he orders the parts so i can check it against the 5w-30 Ive been given

You must be one of the lucky owners then.
The BUL engines are not known to suffer from the dreaded oil consumption issues that has been causing so many probs , but like all the 2.0tfsi 's in B7 they do use it all the same, how much does vary from car to car.
Audi do quote official consumption figures can be as low as 0.5 ltr per 1000klm to be normal which does really set the starting point for what is excessive consumption.

I don't check milage to oil consumption anymore as such , but check oil level weekly without fail for normal usage.
My old bus is on 76k miles and uses a lot less than it used to when sticking with the 5w30 .
To outline why each car varies so much , I purchased my car 5 years ago with 29k on the clock one owner and within 12 months audi had fitted a new short motor under warranty due to high oil consumption, even with that the consumption was the same until I changed to 5w40 ester based.
It uses it but now where near as much , but when I did briefly go back to the "other stuff" oil consumption was very poor again.

So either you are one of the minority that have really good oil consumption or maybe you don't really use the engine to its designed potential.
Just " normal pootling around " will extended oil topping a lot , drive a bit more spirited and it will drop , sometimes a lot.
I not suggesting mad driving , just giving the engine something to do rather than just going through the motions.

carbon build kills these engines aswell, unless you work the engine it wont get burnt off, but when you work the engine the oil get's used......simple as that.
just my input from 5 years ownership.

have a good one chap

Cheers rob, im well aware of the oil issues on these cars

I dont keep that much of an eye on the oil level, maybe once a month when I check tyre pressure, fluid levels etc...

Think I am one of the lucky ones with mine, been on fixed services since new, never had any major issues according to the full history

Car gets regularly booted right up to the red line through all the gears

Kinda dreading the day I have to replace it!

Uau! This post could have been writen by me!

Mine is an 05, it as 223000 km, and drinks 1 litre of 5w30 every change (~10000 km).

Cheers

I think you should consider yourself to be fortunate to have an engine that consumes such meagre volumes of oil, I wish my old bus was the same.:icon thumright:
I do still think that all you lot that don't have high oil consumption with their engines are in the minority to be honest, but hey good luck to you all .
