Hi, wondering what to do with my ageing A4 avant 2.0 tdi, it's a 2010 with 142,000 miles on it and has served
us well over the years but it's MOT time next week and the list of things wrong with it is growing,

Cambelt needs changing
P2015 error needs fixing for MOT
There's a very loud creaking noise from the front, noticable when breaking and going over bumps etc (roll bar links have been replaced though so I'm guessing lower arms?)
Temperature doesn't get up to normal
Both front wings dented/bodywork scratched in places
Main concern is everything is original, suspension, brakes, exhaust, clutch etc.

I've looked at buying a newer car but everything I like/want is a lot of money and in fairness the old Audi drives nice, it's still smooth and quiet and pulls well, so the question is do you think this is a big list of jobs and I should just get rid, or do you consider these minor and I should fix it up?

If it was yours, what parts would you replace and how would you make it feel good to own again (I guess I've falled out of love with it a bit to be honest)

Thanks for any help

What is your budget for a replacement?
What is your budget for a fix-up of the existing car?

Sell it. No guarantee the next you buy will not need repairs but it's easier to find the money for something you love.

Was the same with my old A4 it was nice but needed some work, I've spent way more on my S5 than my A4 needed but I don't grudge it.

But it's your money/budget.

We had a lovely 1.9 tdi a3 served us well in 5 years did not want to pass the old girl on so give it to my father in law hes had it 2 years still runs like a dream. . . . See it regularly 149k atm

Thanks, if I have to replace then I'd be looking at spending no more than 12k but I'm a bit tight and would like to spend nothing if possible! As for budget to fix I'm not sure, I'm guessing it'll cost near what the car is worth at the moment.

When you are ready to change its best to get on with it.Trouble is once your car has begun to show its age it has to be P/exed or sold cheap

Personally I’d take it to a local specialist, get them to quote for the work, then take it from there. It’ll be a lot less than £12k. Cam belt will be maybe £500/600 and control arms £250. You’ll like it again when it’s fixed. Get it valeted too, treat yourself! :icon thumright:

Sell it. Mercenary I know, but if it had been a quattro it might have been worth saving.

The cambelt and water-pump will cost around £600. The thermostat is probably goosed, so again fit genuine. Part is relatively inexpensive.

I wouldn't worry about the exhaust, as they are solid. I sold my 2001 A4 quattro Avant 2 years ago on its original exhaust at 165k miles. Suspension, if you're doing lower arms, then do the upper arms too. Fit Meyle HD kit. 4 year warranty, but will need tracking check on completion. Not cheap, but fit EBay Chinese copies and you'll be lucky if they last a year.

Wings, no point repairing. Pattern parts will rust in no time, plus to blend in (assuming its metallic) will cost. Surface scratches on the bodywork can be removed to a point, but if you can feel it with your nail, then it needs painted.

P0215 error. Sounds like air intake maifold. This is a great picture heavy link.

Cam belt is service item and can be done with water pump for a shade under £400 at an Audi/VAG indie.

I don’t know what you use your car for, but a lot people have an irrational fear to high mileage. I’ve taken so many VAG company cars to 150k+ with nothing but service items replaced. The only common thing I’ve noticed go wrong is air conditioner compressors in 3 different VAG cars and always around 130k.

I now own this particular B8.5 which I bought with 40k on the clock and intend to keep until 160-180k miles. Currently up to 95k. The best bit about the Audi is that it still feels like brand new - no creaks or anything.

I suppose all I would say is I do 85% motorway driving which causes relatively little stress to the car I guess.

If I were you I’d wait for MOT time and assess. You could have another year in the car without spending much more?

Do you have any more info on the car, colour, spec etc and a price if your considering selling that is :)

Thanks for all the advise, sorry it's been a while getting back on here, was waiting to see what happened at MOT time and guess what, it passed! Well
it needed new disc's and pads on the back but that's all. I reset the engine management light before I took it in (luckily it stayed off for a few hours!) so I think I'm gong to keep it for awhile, going to get the bodywork fix and getting a price for the cambelt next week.
