Hi Guys

Recently let my A3 go after 6 years of ownership and many miles done it sadly died... I decided to upgrade and get the A4 2.0TDI B8.K Black edition.. love it. Even tho it cost me 45quid for a new indicator on the wing mirror (needed it quickly at the time). Ive had it for about 6 months now with no issues.

5 Days ago I got to work and through the gates, stop start came on.. then would not start. I did the usual unlock/lock, tried to start to no avail. Lad from work pushed my up to the car park. 30 minutes later it started, thought it may have just been having a moment. Left for home 12 hours later, no issues, used 2 further days no issues. Yesterday I stalled it at the petrol garage, would not start again same problem. When I push the fob/key in it just makes a click and does not fire what so ever not even an attempt, engine light just sat there laughing at me. I went for a walk came back and it started, got it home and called the RAC just as a last resort as now in blind panic mode. They came looked over it and said the battery isn't charging correctly and it appears faulty, checked it over and not the correct battery and not coded. Brilliant maybe that will be sorted, they arrived today and fitted a new one.. it worked brilliant, paid the guy and he left.

30 minutes later feeling quite happy went to get some beers for the evening, would not start. Called them back low and behold they have not ******* idea and it will need taking to main dealer. He suspects that because of the **** battery that is in it has caused electrical issues with the immo, it does not seem to be registering the fob and I only have the one.

Any help before I take it to the dealership and burn a massive ******* hole in my credit card.

It needs scanning for fault codes and take it from there, I definitely wouldn't be taking it to a main dealer they will have your pants down. If you don't have the tech or skills to do a fault code scan then an independent garage is the way to go.

going to take it to the local specialist this week hopefully. Just wonder if anyone has any clues as to what it might be.

Have you tried turning the "stop start" function off and just simply not using it. For test elimination purposes! Also other on here may back me invest in a little gadget named carista OBD2 dongle! This will help you fault code reading without going to a "service" centre.

I had I similar sort of issue it was a wire in boot that connects to battery and sometimes would start sometimes not tightened and sorted problem.

But before that replaced blow cable the blows in event of crash thought it was that it wasn't £150 just for part.

Mine was 59 plate b8 2.0tdi

I suggest go into boot take everything out and make sure everything it tight that connects to battery and all connections are good careful with the blow cable.

Thing is I can’t keep it off the road for too long, that would make a little bit of sense re the boot since he replaced the battery the charging and alternator are now as they should but it’s now not starting at all, he suspect the key fob. What’s the blow cable? Any pics?

Yeah tried this but still the same, hate the stop start it’s crap

Dont have a pic but you'll see it once you take spare wheel and stuff out I dont think it's the fob or stop start as mine showed that too.

You can permanently disable stop start with the carista app as I have but deal with the matter in hand 1st.

Tbh something’s not right, it’s as if there is no power getting to the starter etc. But all worked fine when first swapped on one attempt at starting but has since stopped and he basically scratched head and said you’ll need to take it to main dealer, I’ll get in the boot tomorrow and have a tighten up but for some reason it’s as if the power/electric is a being stopped when attempting to start

Sounds like exactly my problem tbf am sure I done a post on here about it buddy.

But mine was definitely a wire in boot.

Mine would bump start tho.

Will it not turn over at all not even crank ?

Sadly all my mates live about 25 mins away from me but worked on a bump start the other day.

Yeah doesn’t even crank over now it’s as if there is something cut off from making it all work if that makes sense which could be a wire loose since the battery has been replaced and if anything made it worse am going to say that’s a possibility. I’ll give it a look over tomorrow.

10+ years ago I hated messing with my Saxo but god I miss simple mechanics and electrics lol

Also I've just thought batteries for our cars need to be coded if it's been replaced recently I'd check its OEM or at least recommend to work with the system correctly!

Yeah it was recoded, which it worked then, after he left about 30 mins later went out would not work came back and did a system drain to pull all power to reset all codes. Still nothing just a click when you go to start it under the bonnet. Occasionally it won’t release the fob

Sadly Yeah, but been told that would only lock/unlock the car the immobiliser doesn’t need power however am unsure of this

Changed the fob battery.. still nothing

Am starting to fear that possible could be a starter, the RAC chap said that it’s showing as fine by the computer reading, but I’ve been out this morning and now it’s not even making the click under the bonnet so possible it could be that, how much did a new starter set you back? I’d happily do it myself as am more than capable however my tools are 250miles north so going to have to bite the bullet I think

Quoted £900 from an audi independent specialist. Got it done for £500 at a family friend garage - genuine audi part.

I can get the starter for £190, my problem being is the car doesn’t start so can’t even get it to the garage for them to tell me it’s actually that what’s broke. I take it the starter doesn’t need coding or anything it can be a straight swap

As far as I know, no coding required. What I found with my issue was, the car wouldn't start when the engine (and presumably starter motor) was warm. It was fine first thing in the morning, but after a few journeys in the space of a few hours, the car most likely wouldn't start.

Am literally getting nothing the fob/key in one way doesn’t even register apart from turns off the steering lock the other way registers but does not starts, I have a feeling the fob could be faulty but I only have the one

You could try this ( in case it's your blow fuse at back of battery )I replaced the blow fuse because I thought it was that but happened again after replacing was just loose wire in battery compartment in mine.

Make sure everything is tight and decent connections pal.

You had and bumps in yours pal apparently these blow fuses can pop quite easily.

If it fires up with top video it's your blow fuse.

No I try to avoid having a bump how ever the side of the drive I park on I have to go up a fairly hefty size curb

So I’ve ordered a new fuse see if that cures it properly. My thoughts are he put the new battery in, started it then re coded, could have caused it to trip but it’s electrics so god only knows.

Seriously tho guys cheers for the help and advice

Issue with mine as av said was just loose wire (could have been connection of fuse and wire) but happened again after replacing fuse took it to garage who fixed it and in 15mins was done just loose wire so well worth checking .
Glad your sorted and it's not an expensive fix buddy.
