Topped up my oil by way too much today in my S3 8V and while driving in Dynamic had a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust.. left it to cool for 15 mins then drove home (6 miles) in eco and had no smoke and engine was sound.. can anyone give me advice as I’ve got a long drive tomorrow and I’m sceptical of driving it... many thanks

How much is too much? It is never a good idea to over fill!

Are you sure it's not blue smoke?
Overfilled crankcase leads to the crank pins dipping into the oil, stirs up the oil into froth, froth rises and gets into the breather system, sucked into the air intake and burnt. Suck the excess out through the dipstick and all should be well.
White smoke is water. Have you lost any coolant?

Thanks for the reply, I’m really not sure.. I’m no mechanic and barely know my way around the engine I just know that I put way too much oil in and the first drive after was the result of it.. was fine about 15 miles in then it happened

I presume you extracted the excess oil before you drove the car? I also agree with @Matt Titanium that if it was white smoke, that’s normally a sign of water not oil.

Surely if I had lost water it would come up on The on board computer? with a warning sign?

Not untill it's a critical level. My water coolant warning didn't come up on the S3 until it was virtually empty.

Yes, but but before that happens you check the oil you should also look at the coolant tank level, LHS towards the back of the engine bay, a round white tank with orange/purple liquid in it.

Engine coolant looks like this
