Hi guys,

Been a fairly long term member of Audi-Sport so figured I’d post a brief summary of my A5 ownership as it’s currently in the dealership having it’s service.

Mines a ‘17 2.0TDi Quattro S-Tronic, I cover quite a few miles per year hence why I’m already on 45k miles. I’ve so far had 1 oil service, 1 inspection service, 1 gearbox oil and filter change and now it’s in for its 2nd oil change and also fuel filter replacement. This is likely to be over £400 as they wanted £186 just for the fuel filter!!

In terms of issues, so far touch wood, nothing major. It had a recall for the safety camera in the windscreen, a replacement LED plate light but the main issue is the braking system. It’s currently been with Audi for over a week now, long story short, when the car is sat for over 24 hours without use the brake pedal goes rock solid. They’ve sent a technical report to Audi UK as they basically have no idea what the problem is, not sure if anyone else has had the same issue?

Other than that, overall happy with the car! I’ve blacked out all of the chrome as it’s a Mythos Black coupe. Next on the list will probably a small boot lip and a set of the new 20” Rotor alloys. The temptation for an S5 is growing by the day though! I had an old B8 S5 sportback and absolutely loved it! But the new A5 is plenty comfortable enough as a long distance cruiser, seats aren’t quite as comfy as my old BMW 4 series but the full nappa leather is sumptuous and soft. Plenty of on board tech, particularly love the live traffic and warnings such as slow traffic ahead, road closures, road works etc. Definitely will make sure my next car had Apple CarPlay! The adaptive Matrix LED headlights are a must for anyone looking to purchase one, they’re absolutely brilliant at night.

Here’s to many more happy miles.

Wow that is a fair few miles and I thought I done a fair few haha! I've had my S5 2 months now and done about 3.5k miles!

Have to agree the looks and styling of the A5 range are fantastic, the android auto/CarPlay integration for me is a must have feature on a car for me now as I use it daily.

I've had the privilege of test driving a car with matrix lights and agree they're phenomenal but wasn't a deal breaker for myself! Very happy with just the high beam assist.

Glad to hear considering the miles (touch wood) you've not had any serious issues. Have you not considered taking the car to an independent as Audi are extortionate and rarely know what's going on (point and case they fixed my dad's A1 as it used to grind when going in reverse, got fixed and it still did it and was told it was normal. Took it to the trusted independent he uses and he said it needed a new transfer box. Low and behold it's now fixed). Shocking how many main Audi dealers are clueless.

Hope your issues gets sorted !

Does the pedal return to normal when you start up the engine though?

Same car as mine @Chappy . No issues with my brake pedal thankfully and no other issues to report with 24,000 miles done now.

If the pedal is rock hard with the engine running then that suggests something is wrong with the servo itself. However without the engine running it will become hard as there is no assist...

Thanks for the replies.

The brake pedal is only rock solid after the car has been stood unused for more than 24 hours, as soon as the engine is started, the pressure is removed and feels fine again, hence why I think it’s servo related. It’s like pumping the brake pedal without the engine turned on, it would cause the pedal to go hard except the car does it itself over a period of more than 24 hours. Credit where credit is due, Grimsby Audi kept the car over a week carrying out various checks etc, send a technical report to Audi UK but unfortunately they didn’t find a fault. The master tech said there could be a very very small leak in the servo and has asked me to monitor it. The braking system when driving is unaffected, all lines, master cylinder, callipers, pads and discs have been checked and are all fine. I’ll keep an eye on it to see if it gets worse.
I also managed to get the oil change and fuel filter replacement for £340 which I didn’t think was bad. Fuel filter alone was supposed to be £186.

Nice to have the car back though after being without it nearly 2 weeks! Now more mods are coming to the market, I think it’s time to get some bits done.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I should have explained it better...

If I leave the car around 12 hours, everything is normal. I’ll depress the brake pedal to start the car, the pedal will travel maybe an inch or two before pressure is felt as normal.

If I leave the car over 24 hours, I’ll attempt to depress the brake pedal but it is completely solid and has little travel meaning a lot more force is required by my leg to depress it enough that the engine will start and not just activate the secondary ignition.

This is why both the tech and I agree there must be a very small vacuum leak in the servo but not significant enough due to the timescales it takes for the problem to occur.

Then it could be a leak within the servo or the vacuum pipe non return valve...

Interesting. My S5 does a similar thing. First thing in the morning the pedal doesn't move (its as you describe; being pressed repeatedly until firm) and when I start the car, the pedal pressure is released and off we go. Park and come back a few hours later and no issues. Next morning, solid pedal feel again.

It hasn't bothered me and I put it down to the fact I must have subconsciously been pressing the brake after I turn the car off sometimes...

Be interesting to see what your UK Audi say about it if they find an issue. I'll flag it at its next service or if there is a warranty issue between now and then and report back. (im in Sydney, AU btw)
