Recently I got this "Electronics Malfunction" warning on my 2015 Audi A3 with 51K miles. I took it to the dealer today and they want $1700 to repair the Shifter Assembly. I checked the part number 8V1-713-023 mentioned above which is $1007. So they want $700 for labor!!!!
Fortunately they didn't charge me for the diagnostics, but this is what they wrote in the Invoice: "CLIENT STATES INTERMITTENTLY WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND THEN BACK TO DRIVE AGAIN, THERE IS AN ELECTONIC MALFUNCTION INDICATOR THAT WILL POP ON THE DASH. SOMETIMES IT WILL STAY ON FOR THE ENTIRE DAY, OTHER TIMES IT WILL TURN OFF AFTER A FEW SECONDS. -INSPECT/ADVISE? 1.0 THE TECHNICIAN VERIFIED THE CLIENTS CONCERN, AND FOUND FAULT CODE SELECTOR LEVER PARK POSITION LOCK SWITCH RANGE PERFORMANCE (B116229). THE GUIDED FAULT FINDING TEST PLAN ASKED FOR THE SHIFTER SELECTOR TO BE MOVED THROUGH EACH GEAR GATE (P,R,N,D,S) AND MONITOR THE SELECTION ON THE SCAN TOOL. THROUGH EACH GATE, THE RESULT WAS "IMPLAUSIBLE". THE TEST PLAN ASKED TO CHECK FOR ANY ABNORMALITIES WITH WIRING OR DAMAGE TO THE SHIFTER MECHANISM, NONE FOUND. AS PER THE GUIDED FAULT FINDING TEST PLAN RESULTS, PLEASE REPLACE THE SELECTOR LEVEL MECHANISM, AND RETEST OPERATION AFTERWARD. CLIENT DECLINED REPAIRS."
I came back and looked for the TSB for the above code and found that an improved switch module replacement is the solution. The only bulletin that mentions replacing the shifter assembly is from 2017. They didn't even take more than 10 minutes and parked my car outside in the parking lot for the rest of the day. Either they are trying to dupe me by charging so much, when it might only be a switch replacement that's required, or they are following the older TSB.
Here is the latest TSB I found:

And the above part that would cost $1K:

I am going to take my car to local repair shop and just change the switch module that costs hardly $15. If that doesn't solve the issue, well, time to trade-in and get the e-tron.
