After replacing the aerial booster the radio is still not that good great, getting hissing and crackling on even local radio stations.

Is there anything else I can check?

I'd now try buying a cheap and nasty rod or screen aerial and try using that just to confirm that the car radio is okay before doing any more aerial fixing. That might prove that the booster you bought was not compatible with your radio, what was the p/n of the original and the replacement booster?

I got a booster with the number 8K5035225AA, but there's no gaurentee that this one is working too.

After getting a cheap aerial how/where do I plug it in?

How did you diagnose antenna fault bud, ideally get vcds or some diag tool to see if any antenna faults are apparent.

I dont know whether is, I replaced the booster as it is the most common cause of radio reception, which is also easy and cheap for me to try and resolve myself.

If it is the bog standard AM/FM radio, just buy a cheap screen mounted aerial, hang it on the passenger seat or place it on the top of the dash, remove the radio, unplug the existing aerial and plug in the cheap test aerial.
That was what I did when I swopped my AM/FM radio for an AM/DAB equivalent one, really so that I could find out if the used radio worked okay quickly, before going to the bother of fitting an extra booster and cable.

Edit:- was it an "AA" booster that you removed?

Make sure it's a fakra connection given its a B8
