2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

I thought issue went on until 2012 ? As such I was wondering whether the A6 was affected at all?

Remember this is an engine issue and not a car platform issue, so depending on when Audi started fitting the altered/improved versions of that engine into A6 will be when this problem stopped for A6s.

I'd have to say, now that you know of this problem, and you can't find out definitively when these engine design was sorted out away from this issue, I'd avoid buying an Audi - if Audi is being devious about revealing any of this, I'd be avoiding them, plenty other car manufacturers ready to give you a car for your money.

Agree engine issue.

Latest I've uncovered, partly through A6 section in here, is that the A6s used the EA113 engine and not EA888.

It's the EA888 with high consumption is what I'm reading.

Would that be your understanding ?

Asking the question as I'm making an assumption you know a bit about the issue.

I am posting what I think are sensible answers to try to help you work out what your next move is wrt this A6, I'd be amazed to find that Audi or any other VW Group marque was fitting completely different versions of a certain engine family in different platforms, it just does not make any economic sense when you think of it as both these platforms use the inline engine installation, change over point in terms of "first fitted at initial build" in months may differ slightly that should be all.

Someone with better information should be posting in reply to your postings, or maybe it has all been said already in this thread - have you tried reading it end to end?

Not e2e but didn't see anything specific to my situ. The A6 section query I've posted seems to suggest the position I've said above. If true then maybe ok. I own a b7 with ea113 so I'm going to see the a6 later today so can visually looking.

My understanding is it will be the same engine but 168 power version. Whereas my b7 cab is 198

Hello,

Below webpage explains all the details of the issue. The affected engine codes, car model and model year are given as well. According to the page A6 is not affected by this issue. The best way to ensure is to check the engine codes both on Internet and that is written on that car’s registration papers:

https://www.a5oc.com/forums/a5-general-q/90849-2-0-tfsi-oil.html?t=90849

One more share I want to do is attached picture stating that someone’s A6 is affected too, it might be an exceptional case sharing just for reference.

Well 250 miles in and my oil metre is 3/4 empty. Rang Audi who booked me in next monday for the oil consumption test. She said it was free of charge even if it passes. I enquired if they've had many of these come through and she said about 5 in the last few years all of which Audi paid for without issue.

Hi, new to the forum. I just bought a 2010 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI and consuming about a litre if oil every 240 miles. Called Audi UK and was reffered to Alan Day VW City in London. Took the car to them and they topped up the car and told me to drive 600 mikes or wgen the add a litre oil light comes up. After driving 240 miles the light came up took the car back to Alan Day VW London. After checking they called and said that I did not drive the 600 miles they have asked me to drive. Also they they put on the report that they do not believe the car is not consuming that much oil but they did topped it up with 0.7 litre of oil. All they did was checked for any leaks and now they want me to drive another 600 miles or when the light comes on and take the car back to them.

It is a BS that they do not believe and ask you to drive another 600 miles. If they do not believe why they ask from you again, they must identify it instead. I get a bad smell on this case.

That's what I thought it was, all BS. I reported it all to Audi UK and it is all under investigation. They even gave me invoice which contradict their findings.

Update to my situation, I drove 660 miles on the stage 1 of the test and during this I kept a close watch of the oil meter and it just didn't budge. On hitting 660 miles I booked it back in for stage 2 of which they informed me it only used 1/2 a litre of oil. Delighted to say it passed!

I am slightly miffed that you are delighted it passed?

Unless of course you went through all the palava on getting the consumption test done for some kind of peace of mind that the dealer assured you!
Half a litre in 660 miles IS excessive.
Do not be fooled.
After the repair,, if you had the repair, you will not use a drop of oil.
Fact end.
Being content with using half a litre every 660 mile is not good.
Or have I mis read your post

Half a litre in 660 miles is still not good. It still means you run out of oil before car makes it to next service. This is not good.

I could be wrong but I think from min to max on a dip stick is normally about 1 litre. So every 800/1000 miles you need to check and top up your oil.......NOT RIGHT.

Doh fat finger typo!! Should have read 1/5 of a litre which equates to 0.2ml as per what the technician stated. Furthermore, I had it done for a peace of mind, didn't cost me a penny either.

Go back to the start and read this thread in its entirety.
These engines have a fault, a fault on the design which causes them to use oil, and progressively worsen.
These are not early porsche 924 engines that are designed to use oil
Any kind of oil consumption, now, will worsen and it is not normal
Eventually the bores of the pistons will score over time and the amount of oil will increase, never decrease and certainly not remain constant.
Like I said, once the repair is done, you won't use a drop of oil between services, as there supposed to, and designed to.

Maybe 1/5 litre is 0.2 litre, and not 0.2 milli litres!

Edit:- from Mobzor's posting, it makes it sound like Audi is saying, "own an Audi 2.0TFSI - come and get the oil consumption checked FOC for your peace of mind" - I can't see that happening, or am I wrong now that we are in the season of goodwill?

Is everyone else getting plagued by Audi comms and publications, a charm offensive?

Jeez I obviously needed more coffee yesterday morning prior to my posts.
But yes, 0.2 litre is what I meant.
I simply approached my local Audi dealer and asked for the test, from the get go they said it would be free of charge regardless of passing/failing. Every dealer is different it seems.

So 200ml in 660 miles.

1 litre from min to max means 3300 miles between top ups.

And Audi call that a pass. Lol.

And as other posters have said it will only get worse.

Hi all, new to this thread :)

Question toward the people that got free repair recently, what criteria did Audi apply before allowing it, e.g. max mileage, age, etc? I just got a 2011 A4 which burns 1l per 800km and I''m trying to get it fixed but the best Audi would offer me in Bulgaria is 20% discount on the parts (not counting the work). I just want to make sure they are not discriminating. Second question, did you get a warranty on the repair and has anyone experienced problems after the engine rebuilding? It is a complex process and I'm worried people will mess it up and I've read horror stories of engines stalling shortly after being rebuild.

The criteria to warrant a repair is, proof of using the correct oil.
Receipts to back up that the oil being used is of correct rating, but you do not need a full audi service history as such, just an up to date and correct service history.
The loop hole audi UK were using was, if you could not prove what oil has being used, then who knows what oil has been used? Regarding the repair, I believe it is down to the dealers discretion as to what level of discount or repair is offered.
This is why it is also better to get someone on board , audi UK for us in the UK,
So, before approaching a dealer, in order to have a bit of clout behind you, give Audi Bulgaria a call, give them a sob story and get them on board and try and get them to contact the dealer on your behalf.
The repair, whatever type they do, pistons and such or complete engine replacement will have a 2 year warranty only on parts changed.

I'm reading this very long thread with great interest. The experiences that are being documented here mirror my issue, but, in my case the car is a 2007 A3 2.0T.

The car has just over 68k miles. Purchased the car with 38k miles in 2011 and within maybe 10k miles we noticed that the car was using oil, smoking and severe knocking experienced on hard acceleration. Dealer and most recently, independent shop, kept telling us that this is normal for the car and suggested fuel additive, "better quality" fuel, and that the car needed an occasional workout to keep it running well. Just recently, one of the cylinders quit firing. Took the car to the shop and we're told the plugs are fouled by oil and the rings are bad. The car needs a complete rebuild/engine. So effectively, the car is totaled now and cannot be driven. Very frustrating to have heard all this time that there was no problem when in fact there was a serious problem.

I have read in a few instances that the A3 is known to have this issue as well. Any suggestions?

It's been a while, but my first inclination is to have the dealership where the car was purchased drag it in and take a look at it.

Thanks,
Charles

Thanks for the info Chez!
I did contact the official dealer first, then contacted Audi central (Germany) and they redirected me back to the same official dealer.
They did offer me a 20% discount but that still means I'll have to pay about 85% of the total myself which is huge and I might be better off selling this model and buying the 2012 one that (I hope) doesn't have this issue (right?). I haven't been able to win anything more despite my best efforts and (absolutely true) sob stories. I started reading a lot about the problem on internet and how people got it fixed with greater involvement from the dealer/Audi. Also came across some people that had problems after the repairs. That is why I posted the questions above. Trying to make sure I'm not getting ripped off and I'm not replacing one problem for another without warranty.

Hello,
2012 model of TFSI motors might probably have this issue as well be careful. As far as I remember the issue is fixed during the year 2012 therefore it might be applied to some cars of model year 2013 and later.
In my case I had it repaired by paying all the cost then opened a case last year. The technical report is issued to the court by stating that this is an uncovered design issue which is what we expected. Hopefully the case will be completed in the year 2019 as we claimed.
By the way about 10 k kilometers I have been driving and only 100 ml of oil burned that means no topping up between the maintenances anymore!

Was looking at purchasing a 2011 A4 Dynamik 2.0 tfsi. This thread is certainly putting me off it! Can anyone tell me how much the repair costs? The one I am looking to buy has limited service history (4 services), 52000 miles on the clock. I can't see Audi covering any costs tbh.

Hi folks i just took ownership 3 months ago of a 2010 A4 tfsi with full Audi service history 55000 miles on the clock been driving Audi`s 25+ years and had only minor issues with my Audi`s, i`ve driven 650 miles in 3 months & its used over 2 litres of oil, tailpipes are sooted up like a diesel have the car booked in for an oil consumption test next week.

Update on my case. Dealer gave me only 20% discount initially. After I tried to get better discount for about 2 months I gave up and decided to pay for the piston change. When it came time to do the repair the dealer couldn't guarantee that the fix will last more than 2 years and said from personal experience it will reduce the consumption but it will slowly creep up again. I gave up on the repair and decided to sell. Few days later my chain started acting up - looks like its common to be replaced every 100-150k on this model. Life-time my ***. I got totally ****** of as it is quite expensive. Before I had the chance to change it my battery died. My (now ex) mechanic tried to trick me and told me its not the battery but the engine is totaled due to the chain. I went to Audi with final plea for a new engine discount as my other option was to sell the car for parts. Given the situation they gave in and I took a new engine at 50% cost. It cost me about 7k euro with the mounting. And I was truly frustrated when I learned about the scam my (ex) mechanic tried to pull on me. They gave me 2 years warranty on the new engine (which is standard for every new part) and I've done about 500km on it already and no consumption this far. I'll wait to see how it will be after 5-10k kms.

New to the forum but any help or advise greatly appreciated, I will try and sum up my problem bought Audi A5 2010 plate tfsi privately was assured by buyer that Audi had covered the cost of an engine rebuild , I called his audi dealer where the work was supposedly taken place and was assured it had.

Few weeks later I notice high oil consumption so go to my local Audi dealer and explain the situation , they look on system and say it never had an engine rebuild , I call back to the dealer and this time I am told that the person I spoke to had made a mistake and that he was talking about a warranty that was covered by audi relating to an oil separator replacement (I understand this is also done to see if it fixes the problem )I also called the person who sold me the car and he said that he was told by the dealer that it was done , so now my audi garage has done both tests parts 1 and 2 and the car has failed it done 301 miles before needing oil.

They then find out that at some stage the car had been chipped before mine or the previous owners time and Audi will not help with the rebuild cost , I didn’t even know what chipping meant , my question is has anybody had any repair like this done under warranty if it was chipped, I don’t understand why the earlier repair was covered by audi but this isn’t? surely at that point they accepted responsibilty for the problem , I don’t know where to turn I dont’ have £5000 to get this done I am so upset by the whole thing .

How long ago was the warranty work done ?
Does the vehicle have a full audi history ?
It would be possible to remove the chip (it’s a software remap) and put the car ECU (computer) back to standard and try another audi garage, but it really depends how long ago the work was done, and audi history since plus mileage.

Do you have anything in writing from the seller confirming the car has had warranty works done etc and the vehicle doesn't have an issue with oil consumption ? If not can you get them to confirm it now over email text or WhatsApp etc. Be clever about it.. If you can get something in writing from them to loosely confirm thr car had no oil consumption issues then you have some possible legal leverage in the small claims court with finding from audi. It cost under 50 quid online to open case and they may decide to refund you. Just another option.

I had the fix done on my 2010 Avant a couple of years ago. It had a Revo stage 1 map 100k on the clock and audi paid for all the work without any issues. The remap has nothing to do with the oil consumption issue your garage is trying any excuse not to do the work..Mine was done at Vindis Audi Huntingdon if that helps

Hi guys thank you for your replies apparently the ecu was replaced a couple years ago as this was the first thing they try to fix oil consumption issue I was told by them (reset software settings) and put back to factory whatever that means
The seller sent me a watts app saying that that the engine rebuild cost was covered by Audi at approx £5000 as the garage had told him that but when i spoke to the garage they denied that and said he must have misheard ! It’s not the kind of thing you mishear they called him and when I messsaged him again he said they had called him and said it wasn’t done and he must have misheard ! I feel so upset as I felt I had done the checks I needed

Unfortunately we were in the same position where a TD1 flag was identified on our car (we had remapped it so wasn’t a surprise) however despite the fact that this is a recognised engine issue and not created by aftermarket changes there was no support from Audi.

In fact all support is actually from the dealer rather than Audi UK, it’s the dealers decision how to spend their goodwill budget and they aim to use it for clear cut issues etc

I was fortunate enough to know the dealership
Manager relatively well and in the end managed to get a 20% discount on the work. Could have got it completed cheaper elsewhere but when it comes with to resale the Audi paperwork saying it’s been completed is valuable

That is so good to hear ! It makes me feel there might be some help out there for me
What does the dealership need to do to get Audi to cover it ? Do you know

Unfortunately once the TD1 flag is on the car it’s there for good and at all dealers as they look up on the same system

I can’t remember the name of the guy I spoke to Audi UK now but he had been looking after all these cases for over 3 years and had never approved warranty repairs for any car with that flag

Guessing some get lucky and the dealer doesn’t do the check for the flag so they get the work done under warranty
