Hi all,

Some advice is requested re. the tyres on my B7. All 4 seem to be deflating over relatively short periods but with no real pattern to it. The tyre brand is 'Pace' and they were all bought from Black Circles a year ago. I've driven about 8,000 miles on them. I had Halfords check the tyres thoroughly and they can see no issue with them at all. No slow punctures, nothing structurally comprised in the walls or anywhere else, and the tread is still very deep. Also, the valves are not leaking (they say). One thing is that I did have some ebay metal value covers on the car and they were a ****** to tighten properly (and to get off - due to them rusting on a bit). I've taken them off now and put plastic ones on.

The alloys are the original ones so 13 years old now. Maybe the surface has corroded and the wheels are now porous? Or the tyres aren't seated properly? I'm stumped really as the tyres seem fine so don't want to replace them all.

Was the rims given a good clean before fitting tyres alloys can get a bad build up on inside edge causing a slow puncture???

I’d start by putting soapy water all round the edge of the rim and see if you get any bubbling. Take a wheel off and do both sides of it. Most likely they’re not sealed well against the rim.

I had a wheel on my B5 that kept loosing pressure due to corrosion on the bead, but you say all four types? that's not possible surely, there must be a fault in the tyres, it might not be the beads, maybe the whole tyre as weight is applied. The whole wheel with tyre needs to be put into a water tank to test.
or complain to Black Circles about the problem. I know tyres are not cheap and it's all about what you can afford, never fit budget tyres if you can avoid it, but that said, some are quite good, but you need to fined what make is best. Sorry to hear your problem it must be very frustrating.

When I bought my 2005 A4, 3 of the alloys were so corroded on the inner rim they did exactly the same thing. Took getting the wheels refinished to fix it.

The outside of the wheels actually looked okay, but when the guy showed me the inside rims on the ramp, they were an absolute mess.

You could rule out bad tires by fitting a different tire on one of the rims and checking does it hold pressure - usually local garages have bunch of tires in stock. My brother had a similar problem, new tires, 18" 14 year olds rims and one tire didn't hold pressure, tried different tire on it - same story - found that rim was corroded and leaking air slowly.

All 4 on My old b6 used to deflate over time due to rim corrosion

Back in the day when I worked for a tyre fitters we had some black gooey tak that you wiped around the inner rim before fitting the tyre. Only used it if necessary and then sat the wheel in a big water butt. It always sealed them.
