hi guys

Wondering if someone can help.

I have two k04s and it’s come time to fit one the my 1.8t

The k04-023 has a cracked exhaust housing so I was going to use the k04-020 instead (think it’s the same but from a TT)

However the 020 compressor wheel looks different, rather than having 4+4 blades it appears to have 6 +6

Is this normal? Is there more ch difference between the two performance wise?

Thanks

K04-023

The bottom turbo looks like it has a billet compressor so isn't standard

Thanks for the reply Tuffty, it is admittedly very clean but from what I remember I brought it as a stock k04 but this was 3/4 years ago and I cannot for the life of me remember where I purchased it!

The inner blades do have ribs/lines along them all striped in appearance.

Does anyone recognise this as a feature of standard or billet compressors?

Starting to think I should get it inspected....

They are machine marks indicating its a billet alloy compressor wheel... std wheels are cast so don't have those markings...

A billet compressor suggests a hybrid of some kind but there are plenty of replacement/refurb units that have just had a billet version of the std compressor fitted so probably don't really flow much more...

One thing to consider is that the 020 hotsides don't have an EGT bung... dunno what you are fitting it into but if you have EGT then it could be a problem

Yes I would like to utilise ext temp in the future but for now I am content without it.

As I am running an emerald k3 I will not need one for now.

The engine is a stock AGU so just looking to get it running, it will be mated to this turbo (b5 thread insert arriving today as I was missing one) with an Xs power manifold and a 3” down pipe/ exhaust.

Will also need to change the injectors but for now just trying to get it running and check everything is good

Interesting though too see if it is just refurbed ...

At the end of the day the billet 'should' provide better performance over stock in one form or other... how much is difficult to say as the specs are unknown...

As you are running an emerald then it will be tuned to what the engine will do with the parts you have although the XS Power mani will crack (they all do) so get used to changing that bad boy...

EGT is less relevant then as K3 won't do anything with it...

Wise words tuffty really appreciate the input.

Yes I am sadly well aware of the pitfalls of these manifolds, I purchased it new second hand about 5 years ago (this project has been on hold since 2012 )

Once the cars all done (Mk2 Golf) I will look at building another engine up with rods etc and going hybrid maybe with the aet !!? Who knows!!

Assuming this is a “Stock” K04 will I be ok with 440cc injectors? I know my AGU injectors will need to go before I get it all mapped

Thanks for the support.

Stock injector size is 386cc so 440's should be ok... standalones traditionally run higher IDC than stock ECU's especially narrow band so you may get close to maxing out depending on what that turbo is capable of but hopefully whoever tunes it will know this and keep an eye on fuelling and tune to what your hardware is currently capable of... dunno what fuel pump you are using or plan to use but I'd stick to 3bar FPR rather than go 4bar to increase fuelling

<tuffty/>

Thanks buddy, I am using a mk3 golf FDU so it’s either a 3 bar or 4 bar pump, need to check I it this weekend as only just picked it up... but will keep to the 3 bar regulator.

As I haven’t ordered any injectors I’m open to input, not selected a tuner yet either as I’m still building.

Have gone for a wideband setup though want to be safe and informed regards the afr

Can't speak for those so dunno how good they are at keeping up... given that 1.8t pumps are failing regularly I would at least consider looking to get it replaced with a high flow equivalent as I doubt its really rated to deliver the fuel for near 300hp... not for long at least anyways...

<tuffty/>

Agreed we will see how it does and when required I think there is someone on the forums who can help replace the pump with a decent aftermarket high flow pump within the golf FDU.

Thanks for the advice matey

bosch 440 greens? nasty spray patterns for 20v

thanks Bill this is why I love these forums!!
At the moment I am going to use the stock AGU injectors for startup whilst I check everything works!

What would you recommend injector wise going forward? Is it worth oversizing for future use or does it not work that way with injectors, not my area of knowledge this bit!

If not what would be a good match for my setup as above AGU (Stock) Xs power mani (until it cracks) 3” down pipe and exhaust, wellycooler (undecided on pipe sizes yet) and k3 emerald for management with aem wideband.

Turbo will be the k04-020 as above (plus the insert which arrived yesterday thank you )

Thanks

k04-022 is the non egt type fyi
you will need longer 60mm injectors being agu, so you can look for a long bosch 550cc type injector or normal bosch injector like the 610cc we use with a top adaptor which makes it 60mm length. (thats my preference)
Common other choice are dekas but they're just not great things for 20v motors in my experience. I woudl go twin angled spray bosch 610cc like oe spray pattern, good atomisation etc etc

Yes I saw no egt, this turbo is a bit of an unknown as above so really just a starting point.

If it’s good I will seek opinions on fitting egt elsewhere or wait until I change turbo later in one direction or another as yet unknown!

I think the best option sounds like the Bosch with adaptors, I have seen discussions before on how important spray pattern can be.

It’s all in a Mk2 golf so not planning crazy power just something usable, all started as I originally go given a k04 and the AGU came without a turbo so.... this was all several years ago before the project was mothballed until now

If I was to start again I would have gone all stock k03 (well a k03s anyway)
