Evening all,

Very keen to get the revised oil pick up pipe fitted to my BUL. I know the labour times to do it on the Quattro are higher due to access, but what sort of price/hours of labour am I looking at to get this work done? Also keen on getting the cam chain done too as I hear it can be another source of headaches.

Best Regards,
Ben.

To be honest Ben, if yours was going to be problematic , it would have most probably gone tits up before now.
same with cam chain, most of the problems are down to oil starvation to the hydraulic adjuster , that causes slack in the chain and then excessive wear , that leads to bigger problems, that's why oil services are so important, nice clean oil keep the oilways free from nasty sludgy build up, which as we know is the root cause of so many engine problems and failures.

Thats great to know, I'm still going to get it done for peace of mind. Do you know which part number I need? Do I purchase directly through Audi or can I get it online?

here you go, thought i'd all ready listed it, must have forgot that bit..lol

TPS or audi parts will supply it.

Thanks Rob, are these the same between the standard BGB and my BUL?

I expect so, well should be the same in the 2.0tfsi b7's

Fitted one on my DTM last year.

I found easiest way on removing the sump is to undo both lower engine mount 13mm nuts and then also remove the top nut and the mount its self on the passengers side mount and iirc also the A/C compressor this allows for easier removal of the sump. Pick up pipe is easy once your in.

And clean up the sealant of the sump and lower block.

My only struggle was getting the 2 rear bolts through the bell housing access holes a i came to find my clutch/flywheel had been upgraded to a ECS RA4 conversion kit which made things a little more fiddly as the OEM DMF has recess on the back to allow better access to the bolts (these are lined up by turning the engine over via the crank pulley bolt)

Can anyone explain how this works, so you have a blocked screen !! so what happens next? do you get an oil warning then goes away?

with the original part , if the screen get's blocked to the point it effect's the flow oil being drawn into the oil pump then you will possibly get an oil alert , normally by that time its game over due to oil starvation anyway.
the revised part has the extra port to still allow a percentage of oil to be pumped around the engine, that said quite a few rushed out and had the part replaced and still had engine failure due to oil starvation problems.
I'm still on the original item and touch wood not had any issues to date on this front.

I agree with Rob, if it hasn't had oil starvation by now then it should be fine

Regular oil changes (Evey 10k for mine) throughout the engine's life and they don't seem to suffer, its the ones that have been on the longlife service plans or ones that just didn't get serviced properly at all (my friend's one was never serviced in the 4 years he had it, then BANG!)

My BUL engine just hit 120k and has never missed a beat (Ive cursed it now!)

yep, short oil services and quality oil , proper decent runs for the engine are essential.
The long life service schedule kills these engines, add into the mix short runs where the engine and engine oil rarely get upto a good operating temp before being turned off, downward spiral i'm afraid if left unchecked or a revised service schedule approach is taken.

So The revised part does not work, or as well as it should.
Totally agree with the oil change, its the key to Audi engines, my B5 1.8T had 200,00 when I sold it, I always changed the oil and never had an engine problem, I bought it at 78,000 miles. (just a brillant engine AEB)
So I will continue oil changes with my BUL engine, and hope it lasts the same.

Wether the revised part works any better than the original is probably questionable, as the b7 engines are longitudinal the sump does tend to slope down at the rear a bit which doesn't help , but that said if the oil level is correct it should not be an issue.
I'm not rushing out to change my over to be honest, I think one can become a bit paranoid about some parts on these cars , this is one of them.

My DTM ‘BUL’ light came on at around 150/160k round corner from my house managed to coast/light throttle back to my house fitted new pick up pipe and I do regular oil changes now and its still going strong at around 175k
