I thought that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it became a check on the MOT to ensure you hadn’t done so, and then you get a very slapped wrist if you had...

Well if it can work as a box you plugged on the ECU as it is the case with some mapping just remove it when MOT's time comes... I mean it only matters as long as we can drive combustion engines, when everybody will have to drive electric car I don't see the point to do anything to your car, driving will become so boring, I mean common, having the inside car entertainment system simulating an engine sound, how sad....

This is insanity; it's been dreamed up by people who don't have even the most basic understanding of road safety.

S4 and RS4 have triple encrypted ECU's so completely locked down and unable to be tuned. Imho that will be rolled out across all S and RS models so perhaps not quiet so easy to remove :screamcat:

Insanity, soon enough they'll make it mandatory that new car's are driven by computers with no human intervention allowed.

It’s not an enforced thing, you’ll be able to turn it off but will have to do so every time you start the car.

What is a much bigger worry is enforced black boxes, let’s hope it never comes to that.

If they ever tried to enforce a black box on me I’d **** off to the states!
I don’t see it getting passed what would be the point in buying high end cars companies would pull out of the eu market and then money from taxes will be down, I done see the eu governments wanted to lose out on revenue

And yet APR have already nearly broken through it and are currently developing a remap.

I can see all sorts of problems here.
1/ it would only take a few drivers to start using this and it would jam the roads up for everyone else. bit like making ever 20th car tow a caravan.
2/ If insurance start loading cars without boxes you will have no insurance if you take it off.
3/ Performance cars as such will die with electric. already a lot of tesla cars will leave any RS for dead....

The plus side is this is all about a few safety campaigners with a chip on their shoulders about cars. They blindly try and save the world by cutting speeding while ignoring drink driving, using mobiles, tail gating and everything else that causes accidents. what they dont get is if your car controls the distance between cars, auto brakes, keeps you in lane and blows your nose for you then we dont actually need speed limits at all as you have removed the human error factor. :)
Once again in this strange world we live in a few people, a small minority will over rule the majority, 500 campaigners will beat 20m motorists
just like 500 MP's will beat 17.5m voters.
6 lonely people on a council will get the speed limit reduced on your local A road and 20m drivers will not get a look in.
The real worry will be the government collects 10% of all tax in the form of fuel duty, nearly 30 billion a year and if cars are electric they will have to collect it from the motorist some other way which is why black box trackers built in from new will be inevitable so they can charge you by the mile and will include road tax..
Consider this as well. Its very unlikely cars will be owned by individuals. Leasing will be the norm because used values of electric cars will be nil as charge packs will be a major issue after 5 years.
Last one to jump off Beachy head, please turn off the lights :)

@paddy re your item 3 I could not care less if a leccy car is quicker to 60 indeed a Tesla P100d battered me off the line at Rockingham in 2018 however you could not pay me to own one. No emotion with them imho they are just appliances.

Absolutely agree but legislation will take it out of our hands.

Completely and utterly agree. Electric cars are white goods. Fine to get from A to B just like a Ford Focus is but I cannot find anything enjoyable or satisfying about them. Silent, one gear - just a completely disconnected experience. 95% of that performance is never used so the whole drag race reference that Tesla owners bang on about is not exactly relevant. I had a P85 for two weeks and couldnt wait to give it back. Our Polo GTI we also had at the time was far more enjoyable to drive.

Yes but there was a time when people wouldn't ride in trains because it was claimed humans would suffocate at speeds over 20mph. Times change...

Tesla or RS4 will not be the choice ! You will be here saying i have just had my new Audi chipped to 10k megabytes :) not 500bhp

the car as a form of fun will be killed off much like they have killed off motorbikes. anyway with Ocardo and Amazon delivering your every need and people working from home you will not need to go, outside anymore so will not need a Dyson Gti :)

Do agree - got to enjoy ICE cars whilst we can. I normally lease but as EV becomes the only new option I will buy something used and have fun for as long as I can. I still haven't ticked V8 off the list yet.
