Anyone know the difference between the steering racks between facelift and prefacelift cars?

The rack on my A4's leaking, and being a TQS has the same rack as used on the S4 and RS4, ending 052HX.

I have a 052D rack from a pre-facelift S4 here, but i'm unsure as to wether they're internally different? The PFL rack has some sort of damper attached, but i can remove that easily enough. Is the damper the only change?

ETKA suggests that different models even within the same age have different racks, but i cant really figure out why that is. IE a 1.8T has a different rack to a V6 diesel which is different to the S4.

I think Bradderz had played about swapping some of the racks around? Did you notice any differences?

I did mate the steering on the 96' rack which has no damper is very light were as the old damper rack felt heavier, i have a rack to go on which is apparently off a 00' TQS which is numbered 8D2 422 071 A !!

i cant say if theres any difference between the racks as ive just not had the time to fit the 071 A rack.

i think audi have changed the part numbers as well which causes confusion, the only differance i could see is the feed and return holes on the racks this is the one to go on

the one that is on now the 96' one has bigger holes !!!

071A supercedes to 052HX, which is the rack listed for the S4/RS4 and TQS after 2000.

Interesting that the '96 rack was lighter, maybe they reduced the assistance on the S4/RS4/TQS racks to give a more sporting, weighty feel?

Im thinking that this '96 FWD rack maybe the cause of my steering issues but wont no till i fit the '00 im thinking that the later ones have more resistance to the point it has no damper attached and that my old damper may have been shot hence why ive had the problem on both racks i cant see the bolts being loose as the movement would be minimal and it would be knocking all the time !!

its getting on my tits its definatly not rear end related as if i hit a bump with the front wheels you feel the steering jump about 1-2 inches sometimes its scary and feels as though im going to loose the steering !!!

well confirming i have the right rack with that part number has made it a bit better cheers mate.

Just removed rack as it failed yesterday, its a 99 s4, any of you two or anybody else know what racks fit and what racks dont, theres some cheap, used 8D2422065R 's on ebay, but they dont have the damper... Can anybody help? Thanks.
