DQ250 to DQ500 swap

Thank you for your humble reply mate!
So what you're saying is that if I get the correct DQ500 (basically MQB DQ500) and stick it in my car (BAM!!!) It will work out of the box as long as I have a nice workshop? The workshop just clicks the Component Protection button and it all just works?
A friend of mine is a very good mechanic at an authorized dealership. He will for sure help me.

I doubt it's a component protection button but essentially yes haha! It just needs wiring up correctly but the pinout is on this thread aswell as being on Google results if you go through them (there's a small piece of loom which can be used in combination with an 8 pin electric window plug - there's a part number for it in page 1 of this thread from memory to basically go from 5 wires into a loom with the proper connector on)

Anyone put this in to a MK6? If so, did the pendulum mount for after?

Thanks!

You have to drill out the rear (from memory) hole on the pendulum mount (rear of the two front ones)

After some more research I found out that the new Tiguan från 2017 actually comes with a 2.0TSI (Which is the EA888) and DQ500. I also have the EA888 engine but the Golf R version with stronger components. Point being, it's the same engine. Getting the hold of that gearbox (0DL300011L / 0DL300011LX) will be a direct fit fore sure, should also be plug and play by the connector. Any inputs on this?

The component protection thing, we can just forget for now. My friend works at the dealer and is ready to help out. That part should be solved easily as he can call their support if anything goes wrong.

It should be a pretty straight forward swap ( I don't know if the EA888 crank to flywheel is 6 bolt or 8 bolt however so you'll have to check before ordering the flywheel)
Any of the petrol dq500's are fine as the only difference is the ratios (petrol vs diesel version) just note what I found about regarding an internal technical notification r.e avoid the gearbox if its build date is between 06.13-07.14 as the syncromesh fails

Hi,
golf MKVII R manual gear box (4x4 by haldex)
Im thinking to change it into dq500 (cluch died so that is the best moment for such movement)...
I see differentials (front and rear) are different in dsg and in manual (online part catalogs)
Probably final ratio and ratios in gearbox (manual v dsg) are different
Engine is controlled by simos18 .. in VCDS I see in several places in long coding there are settings for gear box type

Do I have to change front and rear differential (with haldex????)?
DSG500 can be also from TDI or must be from TFSI? Better from tiguan or..?
Did somebody such operation?
br

Sorry for the delayed reply,
I hardly come on here now.

I've got a spreadsheet with all the gear ratios and final drive ratios on for a couple of dq500 codes and also for the transfer boxes and rear diffs. Should be on the computer somewhere or possibly somewhere earlier on in this thread.

You can use either the tdi version or petrol though the ratios are better from the rs3 gearbox as the tiguan box is also to suit a larger ratio side walled tyre fwiw.

I actually had an NZS I think it was (tdi tiguan) and it was fine except for the synchro shafts being faulty on that gearbox code - it did have a very short first gear however so wasn't as good for launching with higher power levels as you're already at the red line when you set off

Thanks
Alex

Its the problem i'm having now, so short 1-2 gears on tdi, i hit limiter instantly and get stuck in 5300rpm. I dont have time to change to 2nd gear.
TTRS and RS3 are the longest ratio, then tdi.

Does anyone know if the synchromesh issue also applies to the RS3/TTRS DQ500's or was it specifically for the Tiguan Petrol/TDI?

Avoid anything between 06.2013 -> 07.2014 from memory (Anything before or after these dates should be fine though. Think the RS3 'box I used was a 2012 and was fine.

Thanks

Thanks. Checking with some other people it sounds like it applied to all DQ500's. Unfortunately I already have a RSQ3 transmission made 08.2013. Just gotta hope it doesn't have any issues.

fwiw the gearbox I had issues with was an NZS, it looks like all the NZS's of that age had the problem - no idea if it affects diesel gearboxes mostly or petrols too regarding other gearbox codes or ages of gearbox etc

Hi everyone, I have a crushed audi Q3 2017 petrol engine EA888 (MQB) with Simos18 ecu and I would like to use the gearbox DQ500 with it transfer case, shift cable, axles, TDI flywheel dual mass 03L105266AM, on my S3 2011 TFSI engine DQ250 with Bosch MED9.1. Is this possible? is it plug and play? do I need to install the gateway from the Q3 to the S3?

No you cant. An MQB gearbox will not work on the older platform. Can is different.

You need a non mqb gearbox + can so it can work.

macraradiators, both the MQB and non MQB dq500's use the UDS protocol rather than CAN for communication, the only difference that I'm aware of is the software on the mechatronics. Do you actually have experience of the MQB onwards (approx. 2016 onwards) being a different can protocol to the earlier non MQB gearboxes? All the dq500 gearboxes for example should have component protection which Is why you cant just plug them into an 8V A3 for example (as they run the diagnostic messages down the can hi and low rather than the k-line as per the 8P)

When you connect the dq500 to my 2010 leon, you dont use the Kline i previously had on the dq250 connected to pin 1 iirc.
can H and L, +12V , GND and Signal wire on the dq500 connector.

You reiterated my point basically macradiators.

My query was if you had personally compared the difference between a dq500 gearbox prior to 2016 and a post 2016 "mqb" gearbox, I'm pretty sure they're exactly the same but have had the software updated on them - and also the only issue with component protection was when people tried to fit them to a mqb platform car (the 8p doesn't have component protection issues if you swap the dq250 to the dq500 as they communicate with the car differently)

Hello,

I just finished the DQ500 conversion on a Golf6 gti, but i got a problem on 1st gear, when the car stops and release the break the car will shake, like the cltuch engagement is bad, i got no DTC of the transmission.

Thanks

Does it only shake while the clutch is engaging or while moving slowly too? It sounds like a clutch/flywheel issue.

What code is the dq500 out of curiosity?

Only when the clutch is engaging, if the gear is above 2 and break to stop, the rev will drop when the car stops.

Hello from Romania!

Nice to meet you guys!
I am writing this message to tell my story and ask for an idea, maybe I am able to fix the problem that I am currently encountering.
I own a 2015 Golf MK7R with an 2017 Audi RS3 DQ500 gearbox - facelift RS3 400.

I am running the gearbox for well over 14.000 km now, but one issue still bothers me, and I cannot find the cause of it.

Initially, when I have installed the gearbox on the car, the car would drive away from a standstill at 1500 RPMs in D - Drive mode, and at 1900 RPMs in S - Sport mode. This setting was corrected when I installed the TVS DQ500 Golf 7R RS3 software.
However, not the car engages 1st gear at the correct RPMs, however, I believe that it is engaging 2nd and 3rd still at 1500 RPMs. I am not sure about this, and nor is it so important, BUT, every time you come to a stop, or you take your foot off the accelerator pedal, when the car comes from D3 to D2, around 15 km per hour, car stars COASTING.

First of all, the RPM needle starts bouncing, up, down, up, down, and then remains down.
So, the gearbox engages, disengages, and starts coasting the car, and it will not engage again until you put your foot on the accelerator pedal.
This behavior has been noticed since first moment i installed the gearbox on the car, and it did it using the Audi standard software, and still does it using the TVS software.

The guys from TVS confirmed that this is the first time they see this problem and they do NOT have encountered this problem before on any other conversion.

Now, the funny problem is, i found a car with the same behavior, which is a BRAND NEW car. Seat Tarraco, 2019, Diesel, running DQ500 gearbox, with excessive clutch slipping, and which disengages also.

I have attached some clips here, in order to get a better understanding of what I am on about:

In this clip at 0:34 -> you can see the gearbox comes from D3 to D2, and then the needle bounces, and D2 is disengaged, and remains disengaged until I touch the accelerator again https://1drv.ms/v/s!Aprt18UeTPmJg75cKVEGAmwD0QdJWw

In this clip from 0:15 you can notice excessive slippage of the clutch car WAS IN GEAR, in S2 at all times speed was not rising. https://1drv.ms/v/s!Aprt18UeTPmJg74coSjKjwZBsO7p9w

The problem with the Tarraco was similar with mine:
if the foot was on the accelerator pedal, car would drive normally. But the foot needed to be on the gas pedal for more than 2-3 seconds.
In the clip, I was giving 1 second inputs on the gas pedal, therefore the car was slipping the clutch.

Any ideas that could help me fix this problem, would be greatly appreciated. :)
You would actually be my hero! :D

Maybe i did something wrong with the DQ500 electrical conversion?
But I believe i did not, since i do not have any error codes on the gearbox, nor do I have communication issues with the gearbox.

Thank you!

Hello!
One question.
What is the KLine you previously indicated on the DQ250? Pin #1?
I had it on the DQ250, and on the DQ500 I did not connect it as in the conversion sheet that I had, it said "not used anymore".

I connected my gearbox as it follows, for the wire pinning:

start stop
can high
+30 20 A
+15 5A
can low
-31 GND
P/N

I did not connect, as they were stated as (not used anymore):

K-Line
Reverse Output
+30 20A (one is connected, one is not)
-31 GND (one is connected, one is not)

Since I did not have the problem with the disengaging gears before, and I now do, i am asking the question..... wouldn't this pin need to be connected to the DQ500 gearbox also?
What does the KLine pin do?

I have DQ500 from 2017 / 2018 RS3 400 - gearbox code TCR.
Thank you!

And come to think again about the wiring, I have a friend with a G7R DQ500 that has no issues.
And I have DQ500 with disengaging issues. Only difference between the two is that his is pre-facelift RS3 (RS3 365) and mine is facelift RS3 (RS3 400).

I noticed that we have pinned the same pin numbers, but there are differences in the color of the pinned wires.
He has different wires pinned than me. Made these comparisons.
What do you think?

The later rs3 gearboxes have "interesting" clutch engagement characterists, if you read the 8V rs3 forum people have noted the issue and put it down to the software (there have been updates put out) but not updated unless the symptoms match an audi tpi notice (which you'll struggle with if retrofitting to a car that never had this gearbox from the factory)

Sorry It's no help

It might be worth completing a basic settings, reset the learnt adaptions and perform the gearbox test drive as it can have an adverse effect if done not as intended

Hello! Thank you so much for this useful information!
Can you please give me some more information about this issue? For example, can you please indicate the link from the 8V RS3 forum where people are talking about this issue?
It is not clear to me yet, how it is possible to have this issue with the software, since I ran standard Audi software, and now I run TVS custom DQ500 Golf 7R software, and they confirmed that this software does not have this problem on any other cars it has been fitted, yet it does on mine.
And also, please tell me more about what tests i should do and with what tool?
Because for example, I know that basic setting and reset of adaptation and all other CAN values I am able to perform myself using VCDS.
Do I need to contact somebody and do ODIS also?

Thank you!

Yes. This addressed previous issues that needed fixing, but will not overcome or address the current problem of engaging / disengaging.
The only suggestion I can make is to revert to your stock dsg flash and see if the problem persists or has gone

Well, I can confirm that the problem was present from the beginning.
The first moment when I have installed the gearbox, the problem was present.
Each gear was engaged at 1500 RPM in Drive mode, and at 1900 RPM in Sport mode.
The DSG tune addressed the issue for 1st gear and addressed 98% of the rest of the issues. This is the only one that still persists.

I just finished swapping my DQ500 from a 2013 RSQ3 in to my MK6 GTI.

With my DQ250, I had a unitronic stage 2 tune which made it show the gear.

After swapping the DQ500 in, it shows D and the gear number after, is that standard operation for the DQ500?

When is swap it in to manual/tiptronic, it doesn't show anything, when it should just show the gear number. Has anyone experienced this issue? Sounds like it's just a software issue and can fixed by a DSG tuner.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I know that showing the gear indicator is either from codings via VCDS / Odis or from software of the gearbox.
I would go and try to look into the codings first option.
When I had my DSG software installed I remember there was an option that said "Gear display indicator MFA activation". I already had it activated so didn't bother too much with this, but you can check.

What gearbox software are you currently running?

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Not sure, gotta check. Car's not in my possession right now.

I finally finished the swap last weekend and drove about 250km. Unfortunately, I started having an issue when I pulled in to a parking lot. It made a loud clunking noise and juddered. I parked and turned it off for about 10 mins.

I turned it back on and tried to reverse but it barely moved and it wouldn't move in neutral with 2 people pushing. I was able to drive forward and shift through gears but it made a grinding noise that varied in loudness.

It's a 2013 dq500 from a RSQ3 swapped in to a 2012 GTI.

Any ideas?
